What do airlines do if children have extended tantrums?

This is an article posted in the australian Traveller website. The writer says the flight was from SYD-KUL, and it mentioned there were seat back television. I suppose the writer flew on MH... is there anything flight attendants can do to assist? (all I can gather is that it sounds like the child was not interested in IFE).

 

I was lucky flying on the red eye SYD-KUL, no child tantrum only that the kid next to us vomited in the dark. The mother used the blankets to cover it and didn't tell any of the crew about it...
