MAS is suffering from heavy cancellation now.......got to know this from a friend working in travel agencies. A lot of them are routing through KLM, Thai and SQ for flight to Europe and Australia.

10 questions posed by the Russian military to Ukraine and USA about the crash. I must say Russia is looking the more professional and composed side now. Everything is backed by substantial and hard evidence. Maybe that's why Mr Putin is not flinching

To blame MAS for MH17 using Ukrainian airspace is quite off the mark. Here's an analogy.

 

Someone is driving from KL to Penang on the North-South Expressway. There have been reports in recent weeks of a fight between 2 clans in Kampung X, somewhere in Perak. Kampung X is about 10km from the nearest perimeter fence of the North-South Expressway. Police report that one clan was known to be in possession of pistols, and that there have been damages to properties and vehicles. Motorists on the North-South Expressway however have no reason to be concerned as it's a local issue. Moreover, the village is separated by a thick rubber plantation from the North-South Expressway. Fighting has only been observed within the confines of the village. The village is declared a danger zone and outsiders are barred. Police have yet to contain the local fighting. However, police have beefed up security in the vicinity and have managed to cordon the village. Police caution the travelling public of the danger zone but declare the expressway safe after making a thorough risk assessment. Thousands of motorists continue to use it.

 

One fine day, fighting extends beyond the boundaries of the village, deep into the plantation and close to the perimeter of the expressway. Unbeknown to the local police, one clan had secretly gotten possession of an automatic machine rifle. In an ensuing fight, the clan with the automatic machine gun hunts down a pickup truck from the rival clan deep into the rubber plantation, coming dangerously close to the perimeter of the expressway. In the heat of a chase, the chasing clan opens fire at the fleeing pickup truck of the rival clan. However, the untrained gunman, used to only handling small pistols, struggles to control his automatic rifle, firing aimlessly at 200 rounds per minute. Some rounds hit an express bus carrying 40 passengers on the North-South Expressway. The bus was unlucky enough to be hit in it's fuel tanks and engine. Several tyres were also blown off. The bus spins and flips uncontrollably many times over and comes to a rest in a ditch, but not before catching fire and bursting into flames. All on board perish.

 

Initial reports suggest that the police underestimated the potential dangers. But reports also suggest the bus operator and driver should have taken an alternative trunk road on the other side of the expressway, which would have brought them even further away from the village. This alternative route would only have cost the operator an additional 20 minutes of travelling time. Although the police were confident that the expressway was safe for use, the bus operator shouldn't have taken chances. They should have anticipated that there was a chance of heavy automatic machine rifles being used and that fighting would expand way beyond the confines of the cordoned village. People are questioning the safety standards of the bus operator. The signs were there. They should have seen it coming.

To many out there, they are clueless about the MH17 flght route and its legitimacy about it. What they do know and hear is that other airliners are using alternative routes to bypass this troubled territory. The backlash out of this incidence and also MH370 eventhough its not MAS's fault, is expected and the vast cancellation of tickets and bookings is evidence of it all.

This is normal as passengers perceived MAS is a troubled airline, and opted for alternative airline.

 

MAS would need to just brace itself for the turbulence time ahead, and hopefully there is a rejuvenation program enroute that will revive the airline back to its glory days.

A few rival clan pickups was shot and blown up on dirt road near the expressway.

 

Justifying the correctness of using this route mean no mistake was made and procedure remain changed, a recipe for similar tragedy to strike again but in a different form.

and on why the authority didn't seal off the road and still allow others to use the path shld be the big question mark.

i'm pretty sure MAS would be able to bring itself out of this in the future...China Airlines had their fair share of accidents back in the late 90's and early 2000's which was mainly due to poor maintenance and poor regards to safety but they bounce back kindda nicely...

 

same goes to Garuda which had poor record until recently....

Dutch declare Wednesday official day of mourning for MH17 dead

22 July 2014 Tuesday

 

Wednesday July 23 has been designated an official day of mourning to remember those who died on flight MH17, prime minister Mark Rutte has announced.

 

Flags will be at half mast on government buildings and church bells will be rung for five minutes prior to the landing of the first plane bringing back the first bodies of the dead.

The plane is expected to arrive at Eindhoven air base at 16.00 hours.

Relatives, king Willem-Alexander, queen Máxima, prime minister Mark Rutte and deputy premier Lodewijk Asscher will be present at the airport. A one-minute silence will be observed shortly after the arrival.

MPs from the VVD, ChristenUnie and SGP among others had urged parliament to proclaim a national day of mourning earlier but prime minister Mark Rutte said such a day was not in keeping with Dutch tradition.

The Netherlands does commemorate important occasions such as the 1953 floods which killed nearly 2,000 people but rarely declares official days of mourning. The last time this happened was when queen Wilhelmina died in 1962.

 

193 Dutch nationals died when the Boeing 777 travelling from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur was brought down in rebel-held Ukraine, close to the Russian border. Many were families leaving for their summer holiday. The dead include 80 teenagers, children and babies.

11.08pm:

 

THE bodies of the first victims are due to arrive in The Netherlands at 11.50pm (AEST).

Around 1000 distraught relatives and friends of the 298 victims will be able to witness the arrival of the planes but away from the eyes of the world’s media.

Dutch officials have carefully positioned the grieving families next to the dignitaries, but behind a huge wall to enable them to see the arrivals of the coffins but to grieve in private.

 

In a carefully orchestrated and dignified arrival ceremony, the victims will arrive in two planes, 16 in a Dutch aircraft and 24 in the Australian c-17.

The back of the planes will open and there will be a minute’s silence at the stroke of midnight -when complete silence will descend on the country.

Even planes arriving and departing from the local airport were suspended for the ceremony.

 

The first 20 bodies will be carried by military personnel out of the plane and carefully deposited into individual hearses, also driven by military personnel. Another 20 cars will then take the remaining coffins.

 

These 40 coffins - the first tranche of victims to arrive - will then depart in for an hours drive in a motorcade convoy to the north of the country to the military base and forensice laboratories at Hilversum.

Watching the live ceremony in Eindhoven now, the victims treated with such respect and dignity, the dam finally broke and buckets of tears flowed freely.... :-(....

Yeah they flew the same route as MH right? If they are putting people's life at risk, they do not deserve any support either. Doesn't matter if they are SQ or not. One lesson is a complete waste of lives, we don't need another.

Oh well looks like a stop at the UAE might be worth it after all.

Except that emirates also had multiple flights per day over Ukraine in the 7 days preceding the shooting.

 

In any case, given that there were 800 flights over Ukraine in that week by many airlines, European, Asian, premium, budget, surely airlines should not be allowed to make this decision. Air traffic control should do a better job of controlling.
