Rolls-Royce readies build of first Trent 7000 engine

Monday, 15 June 2015
Rolls-Royce is ready to build the first of its new generation Trent 7000 engines.
The Trent 7000 was selected by Airbus as the exclusive powerplant for the A330neo aircraft at the Farnborough International Airshow 2014. Rolls-Royce is already the clear market leader for the A330 aircraft with its Trent 700 engine.
Completed parts will be put into kits this week, to enable build to start in the coming weeks.
The Trent 7000 brings together:
  • Experience from the Trent 700 – the engine of choice for the current A330
  • Architecture from the Trent 1000 TEN – the latest version of the Trent 1000 engine
  • Latest technology from the Trent XWB – the world’s most efficient large aero engine
The 68-72,000lb thrust Trent 7000 will deliver significant performance benefits compared to the current version of the Trent 700. It will improve specific fuel consumption by 10 per cent, have twice the bypass ratio and will halve noise.
Eric Schulz, Rolls-Royce, President – Civil Large Engines, said: “I’m proud that we are starting a journey to deliver the latest addition to our Trent engine family. The Trent 7000 offers a step change in performance and economics, and I look forward to the engine’s first test bed run later this year.”
Deliveries of the A330neo will start in Q4 2017.

“Shades” livery now also on new A330neo

csm_A330-900neo_mask_livery_and_A350-900

7 NOVEMBER 2015 PRESS RELEASE
Airbus’ A330neo is joining the A350 XWB in its distinctive cockpit windscreen design.
“The A330neo complement the A350 XWB in the new Airbus Long-Range family, so it was only natural that the A330neo should have the same cockpit shades design than its larger sibling” said Eric Zanin, Head of A330 programme.
The new A330neo share the latest innovations and technologies matured on the A330 and the A350 XWB with composite Sharklets, new generation engines and systems. Both complement each other in terms of capacity and range - they address different payload and range requirements and operate together seamlessly. A common type rating allows A330 pilots to qualify on the A350 XWB in only eight days and fly on both aircraft under a single license – thus offering unbeatable cost efficiencies for airlines.
Passengers on-board the A330neo and A350 XWB will equally enjoy the newest technology and comfort experience, including line-fit full connectivity, a new full LED mood lighting allowing unlimited customization of colour and intensity, as well as 4th-generation high-definition in-flight entertainment (IFE) without compromising on Airbus’ comfort standard of 18-inch wide seats
Based on the proven reliability of the A330 Family, the A330-800neo and the A330-900neo are two new members of the Airbus Widebody Family launched in July 2014 with first deliveries scheduled to start in Q4 2017. The A330neo incorporates latest generation Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines, aerodynamic enhancements and new cabin features. Benefitting from the unbeatable economics, versatility and high reliability of the A330, the A330neo reduces fuel consumption by 14% per seat, making it the most cost efficient, medium range Widebody aircraft on the market. In addition to greater fuel savings, A330neo operators will also benefit from a range increase up to 400 nautical miles and of course all the operational commonality advantages of the Airbus Family.

Airbus Outlines A330 To Neo And Beyond

Twenty-one years after the Airbus A330 entered service, the manufacturer is preparing to introduce the Neo (“New Engine Option”) variant, for which it plans to freeze the design by next month. After the Series 200 and 300 and regional and cargo versions, the re-engined Series 800 and 900 add a further generation to the successful twin-aisle twinjet. Earlier this year, the A330neo reached “concept freeze” allowing Airbus to proceed with detailed component and parts design.
“We are preparing the transition to A330neo. There is a lot of work to do, but it is already going well and the team, led by Odile Jubecourt, is on track with all the milestones and preliminary design reviews,” said A330-family program head Eric Zanin.
The A330neo was launched at the UK Farnborough Airshow in July 2014 with a 42-month timetable for development that envisions entry into service at the end of 2017. In addition to exclusive new 68,000- to 72,000-pound-thrust Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 powerplants, the variant also benefits from aerodynamic enhancements and an updated cabin that will “have the same look and feel as that of the A350,” according to Zanin.

Airbus launches new Cabin Brand “Airspace by Airbus”

csm_A330neo_Airspace_by_Airbus_Ambience_

· A330neo to commence the new chapter of the Airbus flying experience
· Maximizing both passenger wellbeing and airline operations
23 MARCH 2016 PRESS RELEASE
Airbus has launched its new Cabin brand “Airspace by Airbus”. At the heart of this new philosophy Airbus connects the wellbeing for passengers with the operational performance for its airline customers. Representing the best of Airbus’ cabin innovation and design, Airspace will offer a sophisticated, flexible canvas as a back-drop to enhance the airlines’ own brands. Airbus also launches the new cabin for the forthcoming A330neo airliner, which embodies Airspace by Airbus and is inspired by the cabin of its Widebody sibling, the new A350 XWB in service.
Dr. Kiran Rao, Airbus’ Executive Vice President of Strategy and Marketing commented: “Airbus’ history of success is down to innovation – which has always included the cabin as a key driver. With the great passenger feedback on the A350 XWB, and our application of A350 cabin technology and features to the A330neo, we are proud to embrace our cabin design principles through our new brand – Airspace by Airbus.”
He adds: “The new A330neo is the launch vehicle for this brand, which along with the A350 XWB begins a new family of Airbus cabins. These will inspire and empower airlines to build the next generation of personalized flying experience for their passengers, while and at the same time optimizing the economic performance of their aircraft space.”
Encompassing four key dimensions: Comfort, Ambience, Service and Design*, Airspace cabins will be more relaxing, inspiring, beautiful and functional, they will stimulate a unique and leading passenger experience. For example, passengers will appreciate the larger overhead storage bins, spacious and contemporary lavatories, wider seats & aisles, and unobstructed under-seat foot space. In addition, signature design elements will be consistently recognizable throughout all Airspace cabins – examples include the latest LED technology ambient lighting, clean, straight lines and shapes, clear surfaces, and also a unique, customizable welcome area. Altogether, these aspects result in an aesthetically-pleasing design combined with not just a ‘feeling’ of space, but real space – which is fulfilled in the brand new cabin for the A330neo.
Airbus produces the world’s most modern and comprehensive family of airliners and continually invests in new innovations. These aircraft range in capacity from 100 to more than 600 seats and over 16,300 of which have been sold to more than 380 customers worldwide. Airbus has design and manufacturing facilities in France, Germany, the UK, and Spain, as well as subsidiaries in the US, China, Japan, India and in the Middle East.
*Note for Editors, the four key dimensions of Airspace by Airbus comprise:
· ‘Comfort’ is offered without compromise to provide more personal and relaxing space;
· ‘Ambience’ is enhanced with mood lighting, quietness and overall sense of space;
· Next generation ‘Services’ throughout the cabin provide interactive entertainment and connectivity, contemporary lavatory features and an enhanced working environment for the crew;
· ‘Design’ elements which create visually appealing customizable cabins and ergonomic features and are also ‘designed to perform’ for the benefit of the airlines’ operations.

MH can have the frills onboard its 330neos.

MH newly delivered aircraft doesn't even feature the warm white led reading lights which I have seen on thai A340 600 years back. it lends a lovely reading environment and very pleasant cabin ambiance.Really enjoyed that flight many years back BKK/SYD/AKL. Instead its the old yellowish light on MH A330

I was reading through the data of B787 family vs. A330neo family. It seems like B787 has much more, if not all, superior operation parameters over A330neo family. I was wondering why AirAsia X would opted for the latter instead of the brand new B787 which will be much more beneficial in long term? Boeing would not mind to throw in some sweet deal to wrest AirAsia X from Airbus like what we have seen with Monarch Airlines and Silk Air.

Apart from AirAsia X's current pilot pool who do not require re-training or minimal training to handle A330neo and cheaper acquisition cost, B787 beats A330neo hands down. Most long haul LCC like Norwegian and Scoot are now recording profit due to low operating cost of B787. Norwegian has constantly topping up their B787 order, now has 40 B787 on order; some has been delivered. From a zero long haul destination in 2012, it grew to current 12 destinations with spanking new 787 fleet, their growth is phenomenal in short four years!

Comparing the 787 to the A330ceo/neo is not as straight forward as it is, especially from the perspective of an airline. You can't just take some data from the internet and apply it across the board. Between the A330ceo and neo, the ceo has an advantage at shorter flights while the neo has advantage at longer flights. I wouldn't be surprised if this were the same case for the 787 vs a330neo.

Air Asia X's (D7) current furthest flight is from KUL to SYD, which is 6,592km according to D7's website, or 3559nm. At 4000nm, the 787-9's fuel burn advantage is between 1-2%, this is only on fuel burn. To add to that, the 787-9 has a max range of 14,100 km versus 12,130 km on the A339, both of which is too much for what D7 is currently flying. Even KUL to LHR (London) is less than that.

So for the range/distance that D7 utilize their current fleet, it would make sense why they picked the A339neo over the 789.

Not to mention fleet commonality which I imagine would be an important aspect to consider as well. Pilots, maintenance, Airbus relationship..

Yes, the A330neo makes more sense as exisitng infrastucture and equipment can be used. With a B787, we will need to get new support equipment.

Korean Air Commences Supply of Airbus 330 NEO Sharklets

Following the successful production of Sharklets for the Airbus A320 NEO, Korean Air has commenced production of Sharklets for the Airbus A330 NEO, concluding the development process. A Sharklet, designed by and accredited solely to Korean Air, is an ‘L’ shaped structure attached at the end of the wings of A320 aircraft. The Sharklet cuts down on aerodynamic drag, helping to reduce the spiral-shaped vortices that form at the wingtips of aircraft during flights. The Sharklets play an essential role in improving aircraft performance, reducing carbon dioxide emissions, air-resistance and improving fuel efficiency by 4%.
Korean Air hosted a commemorative event at its Tech Center in Busan on September 13 to celebrate the delivery of the first A330 NEO Sharklet. Officials of Korean Air Aerospace Division and Airbus attended the event along with other employees of both organisations.

A350 no longer in their plan? Can the A330neo do Europe with D7 configurations and a full load?

AirAsia X has gone all quiet about their A350XWB order after the A330neo order. Only reason behind the A350XWB order was Airbus was reluctant to make A330neo initially thus AirAsia X has no alternative but to roder A350XWB, unless Boeing offers a good rate for 787. However Airbus changed their mind after few lessors and AirAsia X lobbied hard for it. Guess 80% chance of it not happening?? But thingS may change though once the oil price starts shooting upwards.

A330neo order is less than stellar too. Only 174 orders after its launching in 2014, it is worrying.

Full load A3330neo will be unable to do KUL-Europe non-stop, unless it take penalty hit.
