Airbus A330 Neo - AirAsia X Orders 50 A330-900neo at Farnborough Air Show 2014

Recommended Posts

Trent 7000 engine size (112") is similar to current MH 772 Trent 800 (110") engines. Expectation on the range performance should be at least current RR Trent 800 B772 range.

Rolls-Royce Details Trent 7000 Plans For A330neo
As the exclusive engine provider for the newly-launched Airbus A330neo with the Trent 7000, Rolls-Royce has embarked on a fast-tracked test and development program to support the big twin’s entry-into-service target of late 2017.
Although most new engine development programs take an average of around six years to come to market, Rolls is halving the time by basing the Trent 7000 on the Trent 1000-TEN, the latest version of the engine family currently under development for the Boeing 787. The new A330 variant will run for the first time in 2015, and be flight tested on Rolls’ 747 flying testbed in 2016. A decision on whether further flight tests will take place at Airbus before mounting on the A330neo is yet “to be determined” says Rolls-Royce Customer Marketing vice president Richard Goodhead. The engine, rated at between 68,000 lb and 72,000 lb. thrust, will power both new variants which will be called the A330-800neo and -900neo.

Airbus says that its new 330neo will be cheaper and has 70% capability of the 787 although less technologically advanced as the 787. But would tend to agree that it may cannibalise its own A350 sales.

Well, it will only hurt the -800. The -900 carries more pax and has longer range. What matters more to Airbus is that the customer orders the A330neo and not the B787. Airbus still has the advantage of early delivery slots. You cannot get a B787 or A350 earlier than 2021, if you placed an order today, while A330neo slots for 2017-18 are not a problem... yes the main thing is that one can get the 330neo faster - bec its still a derivative of the 330 and involves much less testing than it would be for a completely new designed plane. But its not as efficient as the 787 and is a like a current fit. For airlines, once they chose and buy a new aircraft, that plane is going to fly for the next 15 years at least. The 330neo would be more or less obsolete in a short few years time when newly designed and efficient aircrafts are built over the next decade.

And at list price it is more expensive than the 787.

I do not agree that the A330neo will be obsolete - even now, Airbus spends good money every year to update/upgrade the A330ceo. That is why the A330ceo that you buy now is quite different from what it was 20 years ago.

And who is the master at doing this type of continuous development/updates on old aircraft? Boeing, of course - the B737 is now over 40 years old and still under development. Airbus is definitely learning from the master! ;)

Airbus ends speculation and goes ahead with an A330neo, with "14% per seat" fuel savings

In launching the A330neo, Airbus has continued the recent trend of aircraft makers choosing the low-risk option of reworking their existing designs instead of pioneering development of all-new aircraft. It also caters to the demands of airlines, who "want them now!", rather than waiting several years for a totally new type to arrive.

The A320neo, Boeing 737 MAX and 777X and Embraer E-Jets E2, all improved derivatives of existing airframes, have already proven tremendously popular, combining better economics with proven technologies and reduced development timescales.
With the experience of long delays to the Airbus A380, A350 XWB, Boeing 787 and Bombardier’s CSeries, customers and aircraft makers alike are proving risk-averse, prioritising smaller improvements available sooner, rather than pressing ahead with high-risk and high cost new airframes, with potentially years of delays.
Airbus is banking that this trend will continue to generate sales from airline customers, dealing with high fuel costs that have fundamentally changed the operating environment for aviation.

AirAsia X to order 50 A330neo

Launch customer for new version of best-selling widebody

AirAsia X, the long haul affiliate of Asia’s largest low cost airline, has signed a Memorandum of Understand (MOU) with Airbus for 50 A330-900neo aircraft. The agreement sees the airline become a launch customer for the latest version of the best-selling widebody. AirAsia X will also be one of the first operators of the aircraft, with deliveries to the carrier scheduled to begin in 2018
The agreement was signed at the Farnborough Airshow in the UK by Azran Osman-Rani, CEO of AirAsia X and Fabrice Brégier, President and CEO, Airbus, and was witnessed by Tan Sri Tony Fernandes, Co-founder and Director of AirAsia X, Tan Sri Rafidah Aziz, Chairman of AirAsia X Berhad and John Leahy, Airbus Chief Operating Officer, Customer
“We have been encouraging Airbus to launch this new version of the A330 for some time now,” said Tan Sri Tony Fernandes, Co-Founder and Director of AirAsia X. ”I am pleased that they are offering this choice and bringing us the aircraft we truly need to develop further our low cost long haul model. We are 100% sure that the A330neo will be quite unbeatable in its size category and we look forward to enabling more people to fly further more often aboard this great aircraft.
“AirAsia X is the pioneer of successful low cost long haul travel,” said Fabrice Brégier, Airbus President and CEO. “The confidence that Tony and his team have placed in the A330neo is therefore a clear endorsement of the step change we are bringing to the market in this size category. Reduced fuel consumption, extended long range capability and competitive acquisition costs will make the A330neo a true game changer and we are proud that AirAsia X will be among the first airlines to fly the aircraft.
The latest MOU from AirAsia X further consolidates the position of the AirAsia Group as one of Airbus’s largest airline customers in the world. In total the Group has ordered 536 Airbus aircraft, excluding today’s MOU.
The A330-800neo and the A330-900neo are two new members of the Airbus Widebody Family launched in July 2014 with first deliveries scheduled to start in Q4 2017. The A330neo incorporates latest generation Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines, aerodynamic enhancements and new cabin features. Benefitting from the unbeatable economics, versatility and high reliability of the A330, the A330neo reduces fuel consumption by 14% per seat, making it the most cost efficient, medium range Widebody aircraft on the market. In addition to greater fuel savings, A330neo operators will also benefit from a range increase of up to 400 nautical miles and all the operational commonality advantages of the Airbus Family.

Kisses Fly at Air Show as AirAsia Signs Expo’s Biggest Jet Order

Business reserve gave way to raw emotion when AirAsia Bhd. (AIRA) signed Airbus’s biggest deal yet at this year’s Farnborough Air Show, with the executives of both companies exchanging kisses and man-hugs.
Airbus Chief Executive Officer Fabrice Bregier grabbed his counterpart at AirAsia, Tony Fernandes, and planted a kiss on his cheek after Fernandes said he’d buy 50 A330-900neo airliners. The passion on display at the press conference flowed from Fernandes to John Leahy, the Airbus sales chief, who found himself on the receiving end of another peck.
Fernandes, a long-term proponent of the A330neo, recounted how he’d been abruptly interrupted yesterday by a cohort of Airbus sales executives, who tracked him down on a vacation in Capri in Italy to complete the deal in time for the air show. Talks progressed into the night as the two sides boarded a plane to make their way to the expo south of London, he said.

Congratulations to Air Asia X. So this order is on top of their current A330 orders or some are conversions ?

Its only an MoU - so we are a bit short on details. Also note that the first deliveries are scheduled for Q4 2017 - so it is still 3 years away. According to D7, the current orders are due for delivery as follows:

2014 - 7 (7 old order)

2015 - 8 (5 old order; 3 new order)

2016 - 8 (4 old order, 4 new order)

2017 - 8 (1 old order, 7 new order)

2018 - 7 (0 old order, 7 new order)

2019 - 4 (0 old order, 4 new order)

It would appear that by the end of 2017, there will be 11 aircraft left to be delivered. I supposed they will negotiate for maybe some or all of these to be converted to the A339neo.

Wonder if their A350 order remains intact ?

D7 are scheduled to receive the first of their ten A350s from 2019. Still a bit far away to speculate what will happen to that order.

Why is Air Asia X "order for 50 A330neo" is only an MOU - not a firm order?

MOU means that they agree in principle to purchase the aircraft. However, the tiny details as to delivery slots, number of plane delivered per year, terms and conditions if there is any delay etc need to be ironed out at much later date. It also gives time for both parties to work out how many are firm order, plus option. And if option are firmed up at later date, when AirAsia X can expect the additional jet to be delivered. They also need to work on if all orders are purchased outright by AirAsia X or through special vehicles or leased from third party.

MOU is for "show" only, smile, camera, take picture.....detailed agreement comes in later.

AirAsia Group is Airbus #1 customer.............suffice to say.

Thank you very much for the detailed delivery. Keep up the good work!

The older A330s might move to special charter division as what they are doing now.

This will be the final year that XAB, XAC and XAD will be in the fleet.

XAA will leave the fleet in 2015, when its lease expires.

From 2016, the average age of the fleet should be much younger with the introduction of brand new aircraft and the retirement of all the >15 year old aircraft!

More clarity from D7 CEO Azran Osman-Rani on BERNAMA:

"The beauty of the deal is that I have the flexibility of replacing our current engine orders instead of taking what were ordered before depending on the market. I don't have to decide now whether to replace or supplement them," he said.
Azran said the new A330neo would also give AirAsia X the capability to fly to Europe as it was 26 per cent more cost-efficient than the A340 that were used to fly to London and Paris.
