THE AirAsia A320 plane that skidded off the runway of the Brunei International Airport earlier this year has been brought back to Malaysia.

The Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) in a statement said that the aircraft involved in the incident on July 7 was brought back to Malaysia at 8.43pm on Wednesday, November 19.

DCA said the AirAsia flight number AXM9981 “has met the documentations requirement at the time of application to carry out the ferry flight from Bandar Seri Begawan to Kota Kinabalu”.

“We always put our safety and security issues as top priority and will not tolerate any infringement,” DCA added.

AirAsia Berhad also released a statement yesterday to confirm that all regulatory requirements have been complied with to bring the aircraft home.

“Proper documentation was obtained from the Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) Brunei prior to the release of this aircraft and the flight had departed from Bandar Seri Begawan in accordance with an approved flight plan by Air Traffic Control (ATC) of Brunei International Airport (BIA),” it said.

The plane, bearing the aircraft registration 9M-AQA, has undergone a “thorough inspection process, and has been cleared to resume operations”.

On July 7, AirAsia flight AK278 from Kuala Lumpur to Bandar Seri Begawan veered off the runway onto the grass area of runway 03 upon landing at the Brunei International Airport. It was reported that all 109 passengers and crew were safe, with only one passenger sustaining minor injuries.

Due to the incident, the airport was closed for more than 30 hours causing a number of arriving and departing flights to be delayed, with most in-bound flights diverted to Kota Kinabalu in Sabah.

The airport resumed operations at 11pm on July 8, with the first flight departing for Singapore at 12.15am on July 9. The plane was only removed from the grass area on July 10.

“We would like to thank the public for their concern, cooperation and understanding for not making any speculations on the incident,” DCA said.

^^ i guess the DCA Brunei made it clear already & debunk all the early speculations.

At the local newspaper headlines. Lots of rumours about how this Plane flew off to KK without the approval from DCA etc.

A lot of dumb folks I believe. What do they expect...AK crew parachuted in the middle of the night over WBSB...slipped past the sleepy guards...crept stealthily into the hangar and started the engines and sped towards rwy 21 for immediate departure?

Actually a lot of stupid rumours get around in Brunei practically all the time ...probably because government departments are generally not forthcoming with information in the first place on many everyday stuff....

They were supposed to take AQA for a test run on the runway, before they knew it, the aircraft over speeded, lifted off and landed in BKI.

The Ak pilots requested for full max idle power up at the runway & U turn back to the hangar but not to take off. But they took off just like that leaving their own engineers behind.

So basically those pilots didn't inform everyone on the ground that they want to take off? IMO, with the amount of money 'diminishing' by the day since the aircraft on the ground, it is probably better to put the aircraft back into commercial service ASAP.

^^Yep- that's according to the watsapp rumour. But since they flew to KK already- DCA covers up everything saying they have permit etc. I wonder if the plane now is back into service or just parked at KK?

While AK9981 sounds like a ferry flight, AK5123 is most likely a regular passenger flight. The aircraft must have been sufficiently repaired now to to return to regular service.

Don't think AK will put passengers on an unfit plane.

I don't see why Brunei DCA would like to cover AK's tracks if indeed AK just flew the bird out without permission, or in some illegal manner...

AK still have flights twice a day into BWN and if there's some illegality involved, it is very easy to impound another AK asset....

What about the flight plan? They need to have a date on the BWN - BKI flight, no? BKI is obliged to accept the flight even though not expecting it?

in FR24 show that 9M-AGB grounded in BWN since 6days ago.

If this information is correct, it is a NEO.

6 days seemed to be a major fault like requiring an engine change.

It is premature to speculate but as it is a NEO, the probability is quite high!
