Why the Search Team Is Hopeful They'll Find MH370

11:15 AM SGT

April 9, 2015

The search for missing Malaysian Airliner MH370 will wind down next month, more than a year after it disappeared. However, the team, at the command center in Perth, is not giving up. They're analyzing every clue they find. Bloomberg's David Fickling reports on "Trending Business." (Source: Bloomberg)

I should think that the military had better buck up. With China now flexing its military muscles and claiming territories in SE Asia aggresively, we need to be more vigilant.

A few decades ago there was an article published in Air International, featuring the RMAF as it was then - what was the hardware available, what are future plans etc etc. I must have a copy archived somewhere, darned if I know where

What struck me then was an observation by the RMAF top guy then about how the Vietnamese AF could have mounted a low level intrusion into Malaysian territory and obliterated our facilities at NE Peninsular before we knew anything about it

Happily, Vietnam has since proven to be a much friendlier neighbour than that assessment may have suggested

Pity though that our military's state of awareness seem, well, remained status quo :)

MH370 search will not be expanded further: Australia

3 June 2015 Wednesday

The hunt for missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 will not be expanded beyond its current search area unless there are specific new leads, Australian officials said Wednesday.

In April, more than a year after the plane vanished en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 mostly Chinese people on board, Malaysia, Australia and China announced that the search zone would double in size.

This boosted the area of the remote southern Indian Ocean being scoured by three specialist vessels to 120,000 square kilometres (46,300 square miles).

But it will not be expanded any further, the Australian-led Joint Agency Coordination Centre (JACC) said in an update.

"In the absence of credible new information that leads to the identification of a specific location of the aircraft, governments have agreed that there will be no further expansion of the search area," it said.

The hunt for the aircraft, which disappeared on March 8 last year, has been a complex undertaking, with Australia initially concentrating on a remote 60,000 square kilometre area of the ocean far off its west coast.

The zone was determined by analysing data from satellite signals which indicate the plane went down in the Indian Ocean after mysteriously diverting.

More than 50,000 square kilometres of the seafloor have been scoured so far with no trace of the jet, JACC said, and with the onset of winter and poor weather the operation is slowing down.

The deep underwater search, using sonar equipment after the ocean floor was closely mapped last year, is currently suspended with waves reaching up to 12 metres (39 feet), although ships remain on the scene.

It will continue once conditions improve but be scaled back with one of the vessels, GO Phoenix, ceasing operations and returning to Singapore near the end of June.

A fourth vessel previously involved in the search, Fugro Supporter, was withdrawn in May amid the worsening conditions.

"Safety of the search crews, as always, remains a priority and vessels and equipment utilised will vary to reflect operational needs, particularly during winter months," JACC said.

"Search operations will continue through the winter months, but pauses are anticipated."

I do hope this is a new lead after months of disappointment.

A piece of aircraft wreckage has turned up on the island of La Réunion.

A lot of speculation right now that it could belong to MH370, or even South African Airways Flight 295, a Boeing 747 which crashed in 1987.

The springbok has been at the bottom of the ocean for almost 30 years - I wonder if a part would look like that after that amount of time.

Now, some islanders claim the suspected debris were spotted since May, but never thought of it at that time.

MH370: ''Plane seat'' found washed up on Reunion Island three months ago
Nicolas Ferrier says he came across the blue plane seat three months ago, but thought nothing of it at the time.

it's quite amazing that not everyone was on alert about debris on Reunion, even the guy who reported the flaperon had to google and find out about MH370. As for the guy who found the seat, it's very nice he's come forward but unfortunately he burnt the evidence and can't claim to be the first person to hand anything in.

All this makes me wonder, are investigators doing enough to tell the relevant authorities of countries to be on alert for missing plane pieces?

ok sorry for spamming this discussion thread, but picture released in that article.

Anyone think it's from a plane?

That metal thing is certainly NOT part of an airplane. Could be part of cargo or baggage.

A Malaysian official said the metal handle is a 'domestic ladder'. I noticed some people in the social media still coming to terms with a witness that burned the suspected debris. Madagascar and Mauritius should be alerted too. The former alone has 3000 miles of coastline, so pieces of wreckage might have washed ashore on remote beaches.
