Alex L 0 Report post Posted March 30, 2014 Changing of the guard, Cathay Pacific has handed to Dragonair the Penang flights, with CX692 being operated by BHUE for the last time and KA691 the inbound Penang flight from Hong Kong being operated by BHWM, their latest A333. Dragonair maintains the 10x weekly flights but now all A333's. Alex.
SS Lee 0 Report post Posted March 30, 2014 No wonder the HKG-PEN today wasn't CX693 but HDA691 instead. A few weeks back, while checking flight schedules for CX, they started showing flights operated by Dragonair. Sadly, that means that there will be no more A340 coming into PEN anymore, unless CI swaps their 738s to 343s. 777s are gonna be scarce too.

jahur 0 Report post Posted March 31, 2014 With CX handling pax operations to KA is CX cargo still operating to PEN?
SS Lee 0 Report post Posted March 31, 2014 (edited) It is still scheduled. I think CX Cargo will still operate as cargo still needs to be transported into/out of Penang. I guess we'll still see the 744, just that in freighter versions (Cathay, Korean, Asiana, EVA, China Airlines). Looks like Dragonair's flight is just approaching Penang. Long delay as it was scheduled to arrive at about 7pm. And what's with this Airasia flying so far out? Edited March 31, 2014 by SS Lee

HDA691.jpg CX Cargo will still operate as usual.......KA took over CX for PEN route is due to streamlining operations by slowly turning short haul routes to KA while CX concentrate on med long haul routes The delay for KA flight I think is most likely due to current hailstorms poundering HK at this moment
SS Lee 0 Report post Posted April 2, 2014 Hailstorms.... must be painful on the planes. Hope they don't cause too much damage. On a separate note, now KA sends their 330 to PEN. I wonder whether there will be times where they use their 321s instead. Would be an interesting catch as I don't think I've ever seen a 321 in Penang before. Nothing spectacular about it, but just something new.
Waiping 12 Report post Posted April 2, 2014 Have seen quite a few KA A321 at BKI before. Too bad they are without sharklet as I think those looks better on A321 than A320.
SS Lee 0 Report post Posted April 2, 2014 Possibly due to the dimensions of the sharklet? The sharklets are quite tall and looks more balanced on the A321. Somehow the A321s with sharklets remind me of the 757 with winglets.

Nothing spectacular about it, but just something new. They could when its low season but for CX/KA PEN-HKG route, its always almost 80% capacity every flight....if they use A321 that means the flight must be really empty or their 330 are having issues....321 cannot cater to the traffic for this route in my opinion
SS Lee 0 Report post Posted April 3, 2014 Good point. If the 330s are 80% full most of the time, no way for the 321. Just remembered that this route (CX692) was also served by the 777 and the 747. Again, will need many of the 321s to hit that capacity. By the way, MasKargo 747F (9M-MPS) somewhere over Terengganu en route to Penang now [FR24]. This one usually arrives in wee hours of the morning.

Not too sure of their origin. They were quite high up by the time I saw them and I only had my hand phone to snap (only a black dot was visible in that photo). SS Lee 0 Report post Posted April 17, 2014 WOW Laurie, you are one lucky person to be getting such great birds coming into Penang at that time that you went spotting. It's quite difficult to see a government aircraft like the GLEX to fly into Penang. The last one I saw one was in April last year and it was their A319 9M-NAA. Awesome shots. Looks like a bulb on the GLEX needs replacement... Two CH-47SD Chinook and three AH-64D Apache passed through PEN last week. One of the Apache has the Longbow radome installed on it. The Longbows would be a nice catch. Training exercises maybe?
