Kchong 0 Report post Posted January 6, 2014 I saw what look like a C-17 from afar, parked in front of the DCA tower. Spotters please verify and go and get the best shot...
LaurieB 0 Report post Posted January 7, 2014 SSLee, good start to the year. No C17 in front of the tower at 1030 this morning. Just a Bombardier Global Express. However, parked behind the GE were two British Army Lynx helicopters. C17's cargo perhaps? Caught a few of the regulars as well this morning. 20140107-IMG_2146 by Janner88, on Flickr 20140107-IMG_2194 by Janner88, on Flickr 20140107-IMG_2166 by Janner88, on Flickr 20140107-IMG_2136 by Janner88, on Flickr First time I have managed to catch the Garuda CRJ. 20140107-IMG_2228 by Janner88, on Flickr
SS Lee 0 Report post Posted January 7, 2014 Wow those shots are sharp and clear. Did hear something like a fighter jet flying past the airport area yesterday. Wonder if that is from PEN or just a flyby to Butterworth.
SS Lee 0 Report post Posted January 13, 2014 Ever wondered how it's like to photograph shots in total cloud cover without light? Well wonder no more as I bring you exclusive shots of planes in the dark morning. I thought the heavy rain the previous night would have cleared all the clouds. It did not. The good thing though is that it was incredibly windy and a real comfortable 4-hour session. Regardless of that, I was clicking away. Here are the shots from the 11th of January. I do apologise for the image quality. Just to share. IMG_9678e by sslee86, on Flickr Cathay's Queen "Hopping" out of Penang (B-HOP) IMG_9696e by sslee86, on Flickr Thai Airways sending their baby Boeing again (HS-TDG). Those engines are LOUD. IMG_9755 by sslee86, on Flickr AirAsia effortlessly departing with the extra wingspan (9M-AJE) IMG_9773 by sslee86, on Flickr China Southern Airlines A320 (B-6910) IMG_9795 by sslee86, on Flickr IMG_9807 by sslee86, on Flickr Korean Air Cargo B747-400F (HL7437) with smoky engines IMG_9839 by sslee86, on Flickr Eva Air Cargo B747-45E(F) (B-16483). This one used the same runway length to lift off as a normal A320. Must've been a light load perhaps? Stay tuned for more.

SS Lee 0 Report post Posted January 15, 2014 Thanks. Continuing on with the shots from last week's spotting session. IMG_9885 by sslee86, on Flickr FedEx Tri-Holer MD-11F with vortices on the flaps. Believe it or not, the landing lights at the front of the aircraft was actually detected as a face. IMG_9894 by sslee86, on Flickr AirAsia's A320 (9M-AFS). I would normally have cropped out the pole, but left it in as it shows how much the baby bus is cradled by the crosswind. IMG_9908 by sslee86, on Flickr Here's Firefly's ATR72 also trying to fight the wind. It had the smoothest landing of all the aircraft that came in. IMG_9919 by sslee86, on Flickr Head on shot of Tigerair A320 (9V-TAE) roaring into Penang. IMG_9928 by sslee86, on Flickr Belly of MAS's old workhorse. B737-4H6 (9M-MMK) IMG_9960 by sslee86, on Flickr Another FedEx, this time using the A306F. Wanted to attempt a bottom-side shot of the aircraft, but the wind pushed it from the centreline and caused it to fly directly over me. It touched down just left of the centreline. More to come, including 2 Lynx helicopters with BRIGHT ORANGE doors.
SS Lee 0 Report post Posted January 21, 2014 Moving on to the last segment. Starting of with a prop. IMG_0028 by sslee86, on Flickr Malindo ATR72-600 (9M-LMF). Tried to do something, but ended up with this shot instead Had enough of belly shots, so made a short walk to the side to get this baby boeing. IMG_0036 by sslee86, on Flickr Lion Air B737-8GP (PK-LKQ). The sun attempted to shine through the clouds at this point, but was unsuccessful. I started walking back to the centreline. Along the way, caught a glimpse of 2 "mosquitoes" flying in tandem. Ran back to the spot which I caught the Lion air and got these two flying in. Westland Lynx of the Army Air Corps. Wonder what brings them to Penang..... the food ?? IMG_0052 by sslee86, on Flickr ZE378 IMG_0054 by sslee86, on Flickr XZ651 IMG_0069 by sslee86, on Flickr SilkAir A320 (9V-SLF). Should have seen how hard this aircraft landed. Could have bounced once. And finally, Cathay's A330 operating CX633 (B-HLW) IMG_0086 by sslee86, on Flickr IMG_0093 by sslee86, on Flickr And FINALLY, the blue sky was sighted. Though it was time to leave and thus ends the 4-hour spotting session. Thanks for viewing. Comments / suggestions welcomed. SSLee *I have just realised to look out of my viewfinder every now and then to take in the aircraft as it is rather than to focus on snapping. Through the eyes, the images and the experiences are incredibly unforgettable.

LaurieB 0 Report post Posted January 22, 2014 Good catch on the Lynx helicopters SSLee. I have a couple of shots on them on the pan at PEN but the photos are not good as I had to shoot through two fences.
SS Lee 0 Report post Posted January 22, 2014 No problem Azimi. Thanks Laurie. Ahh the double fencing. I missed the old lower single fences.

SS Lee 0 Report post Posted January 23, 2014 9M-FFB. Ex Firefly aircraft. Were the firefly jets underutilised until they had to be reverted to MAS? Correct me if I'm wrong, Firefly had a PEN --> SIN route last time using their jets. Now, you'd have to stop by Subang before going anywhere.
