Luggage Container Sucked Into SQ 777 Engine in Changi

Recommended Posts

The ground crew at Singapore's Changi Airport may have some explaining to do after a container was sucked into the engine of a Boeing 777, causing an estimated $15 million worth of damage in under 30 seconds.

The costly accident took place on Thursday afternoon as a Singapore Airlines plane was taxiing into a bay, Asia One reports.
A surveillance video of the incident shows the large metal container being sucked into one of the engines underneath the plane's wing, destroying the box and engine in the process.
No one on the ground or aboard the aircraft was injured but the financial pain will be significant.
The airline said the incident is being investigated.
"As investigations will be carried out by the relevant authorities, we are unable to provide details on the damage to the engine at this point in time," a spokesperson said.
"Singapore Airlines will co-operate fully with the authorities in their investigations."

The video is not very clear, but if the container was behind the lines then it should be okay for the captain to continue. However if the container was in the sterile area when he was turning in then he should have stopped. As he moved closer to the stopping line his eyes would be at the VDGS lights and the container could be blocked from his view by the aerobridge.
