Cathay Pacific orders 21 Boeing 777-9X

HONG KONG (AFP) - Hong Kong flag-carrier Cathay Pacific has ordered 21 long haul Boeing 777-9X planes at a list price of US$7.48 billion dollars (S$9.48 billion), the firm announced on Friday, as part of its fleet modernisation program.
The 777X series is Boeing's newest member of the 777 family, with advanced technology including new composite wings and new engines that consume 20 per cent less fuel than today's 777.
Cathay did not reveal the purchase price but airlines usually negotiate a discount from the catalogue price.
"The 777-9X promises us improved payload range capability and reduced operating costs, in addition to a significant reduction in environmental emissions," the airline's chief executive John Slosar said in a statement.

Has there been any quantum leap in technology made available since the current generation of T7s (I suppose that would be the 77W) that will allow Boeing to realistically make that claim ? 20% lower fuel consumption sounds like something too good to be true

Seems unlikely MH is going to take advantage of this early slot. In the past, management is stubborn enough to adapt to changes and this trend is expected to continue.....

The B777X isn't the right aircraft for MAS' mode of operations. The B787 on the other hand, is a little too small.

 

What they really need moving forward is the A350, which can do the job of both the A333 and B772ER. A mix of -900s and -1000s (and in between them derated thrust versions for regional operations) would be ideal. An airline the size of MAS lacks the scale to support too many fleet types.

 

They had better start looking into the B737 MAX / A320 Neo too for their narrow-body operations.

 

They should also be able to justify maybe 5 or 6 more A380s.

 

B737 MAX / A320 Neo, A350, A380. In my opinion, that's the ideal future fleet for MAS.

OT:

 

Yes the B739 Max/A321 Neo would be good for domestic and regional ops post 2020.

 

9M-MXA would be 10 years old in 2020 - so if deliveries begin in 2021, MH would have begun replacing its B738 fleet. Of course, if they need the new aircraft for expansion, they can try to get earlier delivery slots...

When talking about MAS future plans, please remember that while crew and staff would probably be working with the airline for life, the CEO and top managements are usually on 3 year contracts.

Back on to the topic - CX (and SQ) management have always been very on the ball with their fleet planning. That is why they can continuously deliver profitable airlines to the stakeholders.

 

To do a proper job, you need proper tools. Aircraft should be considered as one of the tools of the airline industry. So choosing the right tool is highly important.

The right team is already there but for the final decision makers further up the hierarchy. As Capt. Radzi said
