Lufthansa To Increase Flights To Asean Region

By Manik Mehta

FRANKFURT, Nov 9 (Bernama) -- Germany's national carrier Lufthansa will increase its flights to the ASEAN region, with Malaysia the focal point of its renewed interest in the region.

Lufthansa will fly five times a week to Malaysia, operating non-stop flights between Frankfurt and Kuala Lumpur from spring 2014, Lufthansa sources in Frankfurt told Bernama.

The German carrier, whose Asian operations are heavily tilted toward China and India, clearly eyes ASEAN's market potential.

The flights depart in the evening, allowing passengers, particularly business travellers, to save time and have the day to conduct business.

According to Helmut Rinner, a management consultant based outside Frankfurt with intimate knowledge of the ASEAN region, German businesses are enamoured by the $2 trillion ASEAN market of some 600 million people and a large and growing middle class.

"Lufthansa, which has been flying only to a few selected destinations such as Singapore and Bangkok, will now also add Kuala Lumpur and Jakarta to its non-stop network.

"The growing engagement of the German industry in ASEAN has, apparently, prompted this initiative," he said.

The Hamburg-based German Asia-Pacific Business Council, popularly known by its German acronym OAV, comprises German companies and organisations with strong ties and business interests in the Asia-Pacific region.

The OAV, instrumental in promoting German business in Asia, has been underscoring the importance of the ASEAN region for German businesses in many of its recent pronouncements.

Both Malaysia and Indonesia, particularly Bali, have also been attracting travellers from Europe who are tired of the usual tourist-packed beaches of Spain, Greece and Italy and now want to explore new places and cultures.

Lufthansa's added flights to Kuala Lumpur will provide an impetus to the Visit Malaysia Year 2014 which Tourism Malaysia has been aggressively promoting.

The OAV has been highlighting the growing economic significance of Indonesia as the world's fourth most-populous country.

Jakarta, Southeast Asia's biggest metropolitan region with a population of 28 million, is an important traffic intersection point, besides being the country's banking centre and an important venue for the food and beverage industry as well as the textile and leather-processing sectors.

Lufthansa will be offering five direct weekly flights to Jakarta via Kuala Lumpur. According to Lufthansa in Frankfurt, flights booked by Dec 3, 2013 for travel between March 30 and May 31, 2014 cost as little as 699 euro.

Until now, travellers to the Indonesian capital had to take a connecting flight from a neighbouring country -- until end 2012, travellers from Munich flew to Jakarta via Singapore.

For their connections to Kuala Lumpur, passengers until now could choose from the four flights a week to Bangkok en route to Kuala Lumpur.

The non-stop flights from Frankfurt to Kuala Lumpur will start from March 30, 2014 and operate five days a week from Thursday to Monday.

Lufthansa will deploy an Airbus A340-600 for its flight to Kuala Lumpur and thence to Jakarta.

Kay Kratky, a member of Lufthansa's board of management and responsible for operations, said: "We are happy that we can again offer our passengers direct flights to Jakarta and more flights to Kuala Lumpur.

"Indonesia and Malaysia are both in economic and touristic terms important countries and we are confident that our customers will appreciate and use the new travel possibilities to Southeast Asia."

The carrier will be offering 127 weekly flights to 22 destinations in Asia in the future, Kratky added.

Nico Buchholz, Lufthansa Group executive vice president (test management), told Bernama three days ago in New York that the airline was making a long-term plan to purchase aircraft.

"We are allocating some US$50 billion for the purchase of 295 aircraft, based on an average growth rate of three per cent," Buchholz said.

In view of such large aircraft purchases, the airline will be compelled to productively deploy the new aircraft as well as the existing ones by tapping new routes and markets, US aviation experts told Bernama.

"I will not be surprised if Lufthansa revived some of its old routes which for some reason had been closed down or were not adequately serviced in the past.

"Lufthansa's closer look at the ASEAN region now makes sense," said one New York-based aviation analyst who preferred to remain anonymous.

It seems like Star Alliance is upping their strength in SEA, complemented by SQ and TG. They are gaining a formidable alliance in SEA. SkyTeam might only catch up when GA join next year. oneworld wise is pretty weak in SEA with MH only.

What a wide variety of aircraft choices for travellers!

So now one could fly KUL-CGK with A320 (AK), B738 (MH & GA), B77W (KL), A333 (MS), A343 (KU) & A346 (LH) !

Apparently, MS has decided to downgrade KUL to 3x weekly on A332 and not to tag on to CGK from KUL anymore. CGK flight will still be starting on Dec 14, 2013 but will now be served via BKK with its B77W.

Usually the 5th freedom rights will come a bit later. It happened with RJ and MS previously.

MS has cancelled CAI KUL CGK flight.

MS continues to fly CAI BKK KUL with 77W, 3 times a week (reduce from daily). CAI BKK CGK will be 4 weekly 77W. Edited by Jim Liu

According to this post, it seems like LH will be delaying its CGK tag-on until 01 June 2014 and at the same time, end its F service to KUL. Looks like KUL/CGK run will be served by a 2-cabin aircraft (B744 or A343?).

All 744's are 3 class are they not. The 343 2 classers are first up being refurbished to the new footsie-J seats before the 3 classers are - I kinda doubt they'll send them to KUL first.

Nope. All 744s will be refurbished to have its F class removed so it will only be C and Y configuration in the future (which is a pity because the 744 beds are so comfy - much better than the 380 :p). Flights to KIX/NRT (LH 740/741) are already sold as 2-cabin flights for flights after 29 March 2014. 343 with new C are expected to operate to destinations like DFW, PHL, DTW, ATL and SEA (still a Russian roulette until they complete the C refurbishment sometime mid 2014).

I believe LH's medium/long term goal is to base all 744s (C/Y), 748s (F/C/Y), 380s (F/C/Y) at FRA while all 346s (F/C/Y) will be based in MUC. No idea about the 343s (believe they are going to be based in both FRA and MUC) and the 5 343s with retrofitted F will continue to have F class. 333s will be based in both FRA and MUC as well.

until they complete the C refurbishment sometime mid 2014.

As far as I know there are a handful of 2 class ones flying about already refurbed, and zero 3 class ones. mid 2014 is extremely optimistic i think

There are a total of 18 343s with 5 of the 343s with new F - all based in MUC (flew one December last year ;)). The rest of the 343s are based in FRA, some are 2-cabin with old C serving destinations like SHE, NKG etc. and some with with old F, old C and Y.

I agree mid-2014 quite optimistic, they only have 2-3 ones with new C out now and they have another 10-11 more to go for FRA based 343.

Coukd be a prelude to MH quitting FRA & codesharing on LH instead?

No idea, but the daily flight was in the pipeline a while ago. There are currently no agreement between MH and LH, which is a pity because there are no onward connections for LH passengers beyond KUL (other than CGK).

With oil prices down, I suspect MH might not cut as many routes as originally anticipated - these are revenue generating activities.

Lufthansa To Introduce Daily Flights To KL On March 29

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 16 (Bernama) -- German airline Lufthansa will introduce daily flights from Frankfurt to Kuala Lumpur from March 29.

For the new summer schedule, Lufthansa will increase the capacity on the Frankfurt-Kuala Lumpur route from five weekly connections to a daily service, the airline said in a statement.

The route will continue to be operated with an Airbus 340-300.

In addition, the new Premium Economy Class will be introduced from June 3 onwards on all the airline's routes to Malaysia.

Lufthansa Malaysia General Manager Paurus Nekoo said the decision to increase capacity was in response to strong customer demand and a show of confidence in the Malaysian market.

Malaysia Airports Managing Director Datuk Badlisham Ghazali welcomed Lufthansa's daily operations into KL from March 29, saying the daily service and premium economy product reflects the airline's confidence and the market buoyancy on the Europe-Malaysia route.

Premium Economy passengers get check-in baggage allowance of two bags of up 23 kg each.

The Premium Economy seats also have about 50 per cent more space than Economy class.

Good news for KUL, FRA and LH. Does this mean LH will have daily flights into CGK from KUL too?

They didn't say Kandiah but it's certainly good news for KUL and LH. With BA coming in soon,

we will have almost all the biggies from Europe..

I'm waiting for the day AY (probably) and LX (unlikely) fly into KUL.

We are still quite under served in terms of East Asian airlines - I hope the rumour of NH's return is true. A HND link will be great, either by JL or NH. We are certainly lagging behind all other south East Asian centres in terms of flights by JL, NH and OZ

From 2016 onward, Kuala Lumpur will be among the first Asian destinations to receive LH's A350. Current winter season see B744, summer A343. LH will start flying four cabin offering to KL soon.
