story from the star

KOTA KINABALU: At least three people were injured when a twin-otter MASwings aircraft skidded off the runway and hit a house during landing in Sabah’s northern Kudat airport.

Details remain sketchy though at least three people were hurt in the crash that occurred at around 2.55pm on Thursday.

It is learned that a pilot and two others were in serious condition while the others including passengers numbering sustained minor injuries. There were 16 people aboard the plane including the pilot.

All were rushed to the Kudat hospital for immediate treatment.

MASwings officials when contacted said that they would be releasing details later as they were still in process of gathering information for an official statement.

The immediate indication is that the aircraft skidded due to strong winds though officials were unwilling to speculate at this moment.

Kudat is about 170km from Kota Kinabalu and the twin otter serves as part of MASwings rural air service in Sabah.

From the google map, there aren no house at both runways end. So from both runway landing, no way the aircraft can rammed into houses unless its veered to the left or right, hence rammed into house. Does it termed as landed short? Skidded may be proper?

.....

"The aircraft landed short of the runway in Kudat."

I suppose this what happens when our journalist doesn't know what the terms mean

Anyway, good to hear no fatalities, hope for a speedy recovery for the injured

(looks bad though for the crew, judging by condition of the nose section) :(

Landed short, overshot, skidded off runway, crash-landed which one is it?! Glad there's no fatalities. Owner of house might have had a mini heart attack though.

As much as I don't want to jump to any conclusions, these aircraft have been recently arrowed for replacement given their age.

Will see what the authorities say. By the way, what is Malaysia's NTSB equivalent? Who generally handles civil aviation accidents?

RIP to the pilot...

Ok. Did a bit of CSI work in Google Earth.

From this pic,

I deduced that it is at this location,

Due to the colour of the pink gazebo and the roof. You can also see the road bump from other pics.

But the thing is, it is located here in relation to the airport.

The crash landing was almost perpendicular to the runway. There is no way lt landed short or overshot.

I think subsequently news resports just stated that it crashed in the vicinity of the airport....no more overshot, undershot....and one news piece stated that MH3002 was taking off for the second leg KUD-SDK...

So, if it was taking off on rwy 22, did the plane crash nose first, just missing the house but skimming its roof, and then flipped into the opposite direction facing perpendicular to the rwy and finally, rested on the concrete fence?

Or aiming for that open space in front of the house...?

Speculation...speculations.
