Hi all, would like some advice on Phuket (HKT) spotting scene nowadays.

I am planning a one night trip in mid-Jan - this means the beach runway (09) should be in use if I'm not mistaken?

Also, is the mound still accessible and safe to go?

Thanks in advance :)

Chuo Sheng, was there with Waiping in April and been there before in Feb. Rarely 09 in use for me. Most of the time they use 27 as there is ILS for landing.

You can go to the beach where there is a resort near by and spot for 27 departure and so far this is the safest spot.

We tried spotting from the road side, there will be airport police patrol frequently. And dangerous as need to climb on the fence to shoot where the road is very busy.

We even went to the spot near 27 touch down point. There's construction going on and 1 of the contractor who don't speak any English contacted police . The police came in 10 minutes and ask us to leave.

Thus, spotting in Phuket is not very nice i would say.

Ya, I still can't get over missing the UTAIR B757! :

The next time I'm there I will rent a 4x4. That should be high enough to shot over the fence. The Thai Smile A320 I posted was shot by standing atop a rather new Vios.

Yes that narrow road beside the runway is not easy. I think that there is a hotel on that hill but I am not sure if there is anywhere in the hotel where you can spot from...

Have a good spotting trip to HKT Chuo Sheng!

Hi Uncle Pieter,

Thanks :) It is still publicly accessible and there were plenty of tourists from neighbouring hotels.

I was led away from being near the fence when the soldiers saw me. They were very friendly though, and with a bit of sign language made their positions on photo taking clear.

*Pointing towards the open water/beach* - Photo OK!

*Pointing towards the airport* - Photo no OK! :p

After the RTAF A319 landed they all disappeared and I went back to shoot more departures.

Heavy departure action...

Wow, some nice catches there! I sometimes think that traffic at HKT is more interesting than that of BKK. Too bad we don't see those TransAero birds anymore!

Thanks for sharing, Ramani! :clapping:

I am guessing this is a known fact to many of you, but I thought I'd share it anyway.

I had a great time spotting in January so I thought I'd do it again. Just returned from Phuket and it was different this time.

1. Aircraft land on runway 09 (west to east) Dec-Apr (www.phuket.com) when the north east wind blows. Landing aircraft are very low in direct sunlight.

2. The sun is behind you if you are perched on the southern side.

==> great pics

May

1. Planes take off from runway 27 (east to west). The planes are pretty high by the time they reach the beachside. You will get belly shots, unless you stand much further away with a longer lens.

2. Now, the sun is now infront of you if you are spotting from the southern end. So...I guess you will need to move to the nothern end.

3. The smoking deck in HKT departure is pretty useless at this time too, backlit pics.

4. The sun also runs parallel almost in line with the runway, making for more backlit issues and heat haze.

Use "sunearthtools" website to check the position of the sun any time of the year to plan your trips.

Hopefully you find this info useful.

Just my personal experience, so if my facts are wrong, I do apologize.

Just to clarify...my 1st trip was in Jan Runway 09, had a great time.

2nd trip in May 2018, runway 27, not so great.

Just came back from HKT. Spotting on the beach at the beginning of Rwy 09 is OK. Airport security do patrol from time to time but doesn't 'chase' people away, except for those who climbs up towards the airport perimeter fence. Here are some pictures.

Airport Security will not be pleased if someone climbs up to the barb wires at the airport perimeter fence.
