Sriwijaya Air Offloaded a Blind Passenger

Recommended Posts

JAKARTA: A pilot from the Sriwijaya Air refused to take off because a blind passenger had boarded the flight without a chaperon, here, Wednesday.

The passenger Deny Yen Martin was earlier allowed by Sriwijaya Air to board the plane for the flight from Jakarta to Surabaya but the pilot requested the blind passenger to be offloaded as he was without any companion.

Despite Sriwijaya Air management appealing to the pilot, he insisted the blind man must disembark, a news portal detik.com reported on Thursday.

Sriwijaya Air regretted the incident and apologised to the blind passenger and arranged for him to continue his journey to Surabaya with another airline.

"We have apologised and the matter has been resolved," said Sriwijaya Air senior corporate communications manager, Agus Sujono. -- BERNAMA

Ejected...I thought the man sat on a fighter jet, and chuted himself out from the plane by pressing the eject button.

My exact sentiment. I think the topic can be worded better. Such as... Blind man being refused for travel; Blind man being offloaded from plane and etc.

Not sure about this particular airline but some if not most require the passenger to travel with an assistant.

In AirAsiaX, Visually Impaired passenger are classified as Ambulatory.

Ambulatory meant a passenger who is ABLE to board, move about and deplane unassisted or with very little assistance.

Hearing Impaired, Speech Impaired, passengers able to walk distance but unable to climb stairs, passengers able to climb stairs but unable to walk long distance are also classified as ambulatory.

For every 4 ambulatory passengers travelling in a group, there should be 01 able bodied person assigned to assist them in an emergency. The able bodied person can be any passenger from the flight.

Well, different airlines different regulation...
