Singapore Airlines Revealed New First Class Suites, Business & Economy Seats

Recommended Posts

14 August 2012 - Singapore Airlines has appointed two world-renowned design firms - BMW Group subsidiary DesignworksUSA, and UK and Singapore-based James Park Associates (JPA) – to help develop the next generation of in-flight cabin products that will be introduced from the second half of next year.

The appointment of the international design consultants is in line with SIA’s intention to remain at the forefront of airline product innovation, with the world’s best in-flight products in all classes of travel.

Revamped seats and cabin interiors as well as the latest generation of in-flight entertainment offerings will be introduced progressively, starting on new Boeing 777-300ERs that will enter service from the latter half of next year. This will be followed by Airbus A350s and Boeing 787s, in addition to possible retrofits to aircraft already in service.

SIA operates more than 100 widebody aircraft and has had a longstanding policy of maintaining a young and modern fleet, which currently averages just over six years in age. With more than 60 new aircraft on firm order with Airbus and Boeing, capital expenditure is expected to amount to nearly $12 billion over the next five years.

“Singapore Airlines is always looking towards the future and we have many major investments lined up for the years ahead to help us retain our leadership position. In this business if you are staying still you are moving backwards, as your competitors can catch up quickly. It is therefore important to always be planning for the future,” said Mr Tan Pee Teck, SIA’s Senior Vice President Product & Services.

“DesignworksUSA and JPA are working with us to develop our newest generation of cabin products and the collaboration has been extremely positive to date. Working with our own teams in our dedicated Product Innovation Department, and taking into account customer feedback, we are all genuinely excited about the in-flight products that will be introduced from next year, which will improve upon our existing award-winning cabin offerings.”

DesignworksUSA is helping to enhance the First Class seat and cabin environment for new B777-300ERs that will be entering service from the second half of 2013. From studios in Los Angeles, Singapore, Munich and Shanghai, work is currently underway to help further distinguish the Airline’s First Class from the competition and provide customers with a unique premium feel and experience, complementing the personalised service from our cabin crew. In addition to cabin ambience improvements, a revamped seat will feature more privacy and personal stowage space, and improved seating comfort.

JPA, which has worked with SIA on earlier seat programmes, is also working with the Airline on a new generation Business Class seat. It promises to offer improved comfort in both seating and sleeping positions, and more stowage space to cater to the changing needs of business travellers. Work is being carried out from studios in Singapore and the UK.

SIA is also not overlooking Economy Class, as the Airline’s premium positioning extends across all classes of travel. Development work is currently underway focusing on key areas such as improved seat and headrest comfort and personal space for travellers.

New in-flight entertainment & connectivity offerings and enhanced cabin lighting will also be progressively introduced to ensure that SIA builds upon its leadership position and longstanding status as one of the world’s most innovative airlines.

Specific details of the new product offerings will be announced in due course.

That will be a huge blow to MAS. I think they timed it right.. This will be the the gold medal winning knockout punch.

Still sleeping ah MH management? Even know with the best MH can offer, it's first class looks like SQ's business class seat.

Have they got no brains? Tak de duit? Then stop getting rid of the 772s and retrofit the damn planes lah. Those are MH's most popular aircraft in terms of Y class leg room etc etc ..

*Massive face palm *

More pix on SQ's FB page: http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10151743958103679.1073741834.6352578678&type=1

Looks like their B77W Y class has gone 3-4-3 following EK, EY and KL trend.

Actually there is no mention that SQ is going 10 abreast on the 777. That fella commented so on SIA FB page probably just assumed so because the new Y class looks tiny.

I think so too. Perhaps it is the camera angle issue. 3-3-3 or 2-5-2 is the best IMO.

Wow! Their J class looks AMAZING!

Yes indeed. It looks like a spaceship! Ironically, the new J class should be F class and vice versa....lolx!

There's a picture on instagram of the new Y seats. I prefer the old ones, especially the colours and the closed gaps between two seats. Newer ones have bigger screen, but smaller-ish shoulder space(?) and the colours remind me of MH 777 90's seats.

Edit to add: Many comments mentioned 3-4-3 configuration on 77W.

Oh my, if they are really going for 3-4-3, I will return to MH or TG from now onwards. I stand at 178cm with broad shoulder, 3-3-3 is just nice for me. MH 2-5-2 has been nice to me too, especially the twin seats.

3-3-3 is here to stay, fortunately. A guy had a word with someone at the launch and he was told Y will still be 9 abreast on the 777 :)

Let's crunch some facts and details:

Available for customers travelling on select flights between Singapore and London from September 2013 onwards.
Made available initially on the incoming batch of eight B77Ws, two to be delivered by this year-end.
Will be extended to Airbus A350 aircraft scheduled for delivery in the years ahead.
The new seats and KrisWorld in-flight entertainment system will be progressively rolled out to other routes as additional new aircraft enter service.
BMW Group DesignworksUSA- developed the First Class,
James Park Associates- developed the Business Class
Massive Interactive- developed the in-flight entertainment system interface.
First Class
Each seat features a new fixed-back shell design with curved side panels to provide a clear demarcation of personal space, for added privacy.
At 35 inches in width and with an increased bed length from 80 to 82 inches, it is one of the most spacious First Class products in the sky.
An ergonomically sculpted cushion and improved adjustable headrest have been introduced for greater seating comfort, while new features such as a padded headboard for extra support and an additional mattress layer ensure customers enjoy a good rest.
The seat boasts a stylish passenger control unit that includes a new switch to provide customers easier access to turn off their in-flight entertainment monitor, and for cabin crew to do so without disturbing customers when they are resting.
Another key feature is the in-seat lighting to provide a conducive environment for reading or working.
First Class customers can enjoy the new KrisWorld on a sleek 24-inch LCD screen, with video touch-screen handsets.
To ensure that personal devices are within easy reach, even while charging, both eXport and USB ports are discreetly located within a leather-lined bespoke stowage compartment by the side of the seat.
HDMI ports have also been added to provide the flexibility for customers to use KrisWorld as their own personal media player.
Business Class
Seat offers greater recline at 132 degrees and features an improved ergonomic seat cushion.
When converted, it becomes the industry’s widest full-flat bed, at 78 inches in length. The seat also features a padded headboard cushion for enhanced comfort.
In addition, the new Business Class seat boasts two new seating positions - ‘Lazy Z’ and ‘Sundeck’ - following in-depth research and feedback from customers.
These additional lounging positions provide even greater flexibility for customers to choose their preferred ways to work or relax.
Taking into account customer feedback for increased stowage space, there is now an amenity stowage area on the side console and a laptop stowage area.
Other enhanced features include an 18-inch LCD screen and video touch-screen handset for customers to enjoy the next generation KrisWorld, as well as an all-in-one business panel including in-seat power supply, USB port, eXport and HDMI ports. Like the new First Class seat, the new Business Class seat boasts a floodlight reading light and the LCD monitor on/off switch for added convenience.
Economy Class
Through the use of innovative design and materials, the new Singapore Airlines Economy Class seat provides additional comfort, with increased personal space and legroom.
Each seat, which features a refreshed contemporary fabric design, comes with new backrest seat cushions with side bolsters for better back support.
An ergonomically sculpted headrest cushion, which supports an increased range of height adjustments, offers better neck support.
Customers can also enjoy the new KrisWorld in-flight entertainment experience on a wider 11.1-inch monitor, featuring an intelligent and unique touch-screen graphical user interface (GUI) accompanied by a video touch-screen handset.
