Alif A. F. 0 Report post Posted November 17, 2014 BRISBANE, Australia - President Barack Obama headed home Sunday after a weeklong tour through Asia and Australia. Air Force One departed from a military base on Australia's east coast, bound not for Washington, but for a refueling stop in Hawaii, 4,731 miles en route. The White House says Air Force One, a modified Boeing 747, has unlimited range because it can be refueled in midair. But the president often makes fuel stops when traveling abroad. Commercial 747s can fly non-stop for about 7,000 miles. Journalists and members of the president's staff also fly back to Washington on Sunday, but no such layover is required. The Boeing 777 charter, with a lighter-than-usual load and more than 200 empty seats, is scheduled to fly 16 hours, 21 minutes non-stop from Brisbane to Joint Base Andrews in Maryland. Total mileage: 9,486. flee 5 Report post Posted November 17, 2014 I don't think Airforce 1 will do mid air refuelling with the President onboard during peacetime. It is less risky to do a refuelling stop. The US Airforce is looking at a replacement presidential jet to replace the current B747-200 based aircraft. Maybe it is time to think about using a big twin like the B777-8X! SS Lee 0 Report post Posted November 17, 2014 The US Airforce is looking at a replacement presidential jet to replace the current B747-200 based aircraft. Maybe it is time to think about using a big twin like the B777-8X! That would allow them to travel really far. Less refuelling stops. 777 vs 747, 2 engines vs 4 engines, could safety be a concern?? Chris Tan 0 Report post Posted November 17, 2014 777 vs 747, 2 engines vs 4 engines, could safety be a concern?? Twinjets are in fact less prone to engine failurehttp://www.boeing.com/boeing/commercial/safety/faq.page#FAQ1 Think of it this way: The more engines you have, the higher your probability of one failing
leon t 0 Report post Posted November 18, 2014 believed for Air Force 1, they will chose a 4 engine plane over a twin anytime as it does meant greater security and ability to fly than a twin engine should there be an engine failure - as the 747 can still fly safely with 3 engines than a 777 with one engine which has a max ETOP range. It doesn't really mean that the more engines a plane have, then the greater probability of it failing. It does not work this way as then if we have 2 777 each with two engines, then does it mean the 2nd 777 have a greater chance of engine failing? the USAF should order 2 B748s for use as Air Force 1 before Boeing shut down the 748 line. KK Lee 5 Report post Posted November 18, 2014 Twinjets are in fact less prone to engine failure http://www.boeing.com/boeing/commercial/safety/faq.page#FAQ1 Think of it this way: The more engines you have, the higher your probability of one failing Statistically, fewer engines aircraft have lower downtime. However, when comes to cinc, usaf is obsessed with backup, will favour 4 engines 748.
flee 5 Report post Posted November 18, 2014 USAF also favour the use of proven designs rather than the latest ones. So don't be surprised if they opt for a B744 with GenX engines.

SS Lee 0 Report post Posted November 20, 2014 Although it is not a Lockheed Tristar, but close..... Looks good to me. Now you save on the fuel of an engine, and have an added security of one engine. With those nacelles, there will be a new era of silent DC-10s.
Azman MN 1 Report post Posted November 24, 2014 Can but with severe performance penalties. What does that mean? Must land immediately? Ok, which 4 engine plane can fly on 2 engines? A340?
SS Lee 0 Report post Posted November 24, 2014 What does that mean? Must land immediately? Ok, which 4 engine plane can fly on 2 engines? A340? Not too efficient I guess. You gotta ramp up the engines at full thrust to keep the aircraft up in the air. Not to mention that the other two engines will add as huge speed brakes while not operating. It's gonna be though keeping those 4-engined birds up in the air only with 2 running.
