MAS Privatisation

The many recent incidents highlighted MAG has made a very bad decision to only purchase just enough aircraft to operate their schedule. There is very little room for manoeuvre if more than two aircraft is AOG. I think SQ has around 5 A350 sitting on ground at any single time to replace any AOG aircraft. Granted they currently operate the world largest A350 fleet. Surprisingly they haven't order the A35K.

I hope the new MAG CEO will firm up the other 20 A330neo options + 3 more used A350s. MH has no issue filling up those A330neo to India.

9M-MTL is still AOG at BKK. Any idea whats wrong with it?
BKK flights today:
MH782 was about an hour late
MH774/775 cancelled
MH781/781 retimed and almost 4 hours late

Im sure that there are more issues... depressing

Also why commit to the AMAL flights if you dont have the equipment to do so? Where is MH in terms of serving the people? Don't get me wrong, I was an ardent supporter of MH but now, I still am but it does not bode well with the realities of MH today, no excuses given the quality and safety concerns it causes due to the lack of proper planning. Starting new routes and increasing frequencies are simply messed up with this lackadaisical planning for the near future. Oh well, Malaysia boleh kan?

Actually from what I have read, 9M-MAC weather radar system malfunctioned and the pilot did not want to take the risk especially flying through Bay of Bengal, hence decided to diverted to Doha to get it fixed. Since QR also flies the A350, they have the MRO capability. However the malfunction is much more serious than initially though, hence the flight is cancelled  successively.

Some updates as of 00:00 7 Aug

  • The aircraft is still broken and stuck in Doha
  • The story is now in The Edge https://theedgemalaysia.com/node/721891
  • Some passengers have been put on other flights
  • Many are still stuck in a Doha hotel
  • They are not allowed to retrieve their bags and have had to buy clothing and other items
  • Maybe the plane will be fixed tomorrow.. maybe it won’t however there is a flight scheduled
  • No rescue flight has been arranged so far
  • The silence from most of the media isn't surprising
  • The silence from MH to reassure people is shocking
  • Tech issues happen but how you deal with them and how well you treat your passengers that is the most important thing

They have signed agreements with Tabung Haji earlier on to buy seats on MH Amal flights. That helps to keep the fleet busy. Another source of revenue. Plus MH has always been Tabung Haji first choice. AirAsia X can't commit their fleet since they are short of aircraft themselves. TH has stringent rules of food and beverage requirements therefore a local airline is better than maybe some (unknown) airline from Spain Wamos Air??

Just about to post this news items. One thing I noticed is why do people pack their medication in their checked in baggage?? Have seen this happening many times over, still baffled.

With just a surplus of 2-3 frames by the end of this year it will be bad. One way if they don't want to operate spare operable aircraft like how our neighbors are doing then there is need to have slightly excess numbers of senior LAE manpower and hoard significant amount of parts. But with the global supply chain constraint means forex and supply and demand price hike will deter any attempts of acquiring massive amount of parts and stuff. Meanwhile HR is operating the washing machine by kicking out experienced folks and mass inserting freshies thinking the lower salary would keep the balance sheet leaner.

The most dumbest thing is management blaming manufacturers and suppliers for the breakdown when statistically operating such constant deployment utilization rate for sure certain small things will break down. Deferring fixes and depending solely on the manufacturer's MEL item list to keep planes flying only for them to pile up to a point "NO GO" occurs is the dumbest move they can make when you dont have spares to deploy. Other airlines manual operates with some additional cushion above the MEL list as to avoid potential issues like this. But the only feedback i bet MAG's management will give is probably "its expensive bro" "Airlines from ULCC operates this way what cant you say a other carriers cant?".

This news just hit the wire, Cathay Pacific confirms an order for 30 A330neo with 30 options, worth USD11billion. Delivery by end of 2031.

https://www.investing.com/news/stock-market-news/cathay-pacific-to-buy-30-airbus-a330900-aircraft-for-11-billion-3558320

Oh dear, MAG, please make up your mind soon on your 20 options. You have priority queue, since option slots are earlier than this new CX order. First three coming in 2024, and all 20 will be delivered by 2028.

Mas could and should have booked stranded pax on QR to KUL. Many pax will find mas undependable and will only travel on MH if there is no choice or cheapest.

9M-MAC stuck at DOH is now fixed BUT two new issues came up: engine oil indicator and generator failed during engine start. APU out, using GPU now. Poor little kids who are on board. Pax are now on board waiting for the issue to be fixed.

EDIT: Issues fixed, now on its way to KUL Yeah!!

The airframe needs to mandi bunga once it is back at its base.

MH806/807 to/from Manila is cancelled for some reason.

One passenger posted on a group saying that he has been moved to the later PAL code share flight and wanted to know if he would still get Enrich miles & Elite Points.

I was reading a thread on FT recently about ORC and they did get the miles/points based on the original routing following cancellation when they were re-routed on GA/SQ to get home. Yes it took some calls but they turned up. There is plenty of discussion on FT for other airlines but can't find much else for MH

Any experience of this?

I think it does covers, any flight departing to and from the UK or any flight done by British-registered airlines. More than 60 hours of delay, MH is going to fork out a fortune to compensate the passengers. https://ukairpassengerrights.co.uk/regulation-uk261-explained/

Looking at the list of problems with the widebody fleet, MAG is shown up badly as a poor fleet planner. When your fleet is ageing, it is only natural that there will be more maintenance required and more unscheduled breakdowns occur. The lack of new aircraft replacing these old workhorses and the lack of spare aircraft to deploy makes a dent in MH's reputation for reliability. Khazanah is also to be blamed to some extent - it is drip feeding MAG's funding needs and did not provide sufficient CAPEX budgets to sustain the company long term. Lets hope that MAG improves on its strategic planning once a new CEO comes in. MAG is beginning to look like another KTM!

They have the money, just that they are being stingy, don't want to spend it on things they are supposed to. MAE team has provided feedback to their management they need to stock up parts in big amount when the border reopens post pandemic, but fallen on deaf ears. This is the consequences of not listening to frontline staff. Those CMO, CCO, CFO don't give two shits what their frontline colleagues face daily. Just look pretty for magazine covers and make sure their own department KPIs are met, that's good enough for them.

Well, I really feel sorry for those in daily operations - so much acrobatics to perform juggling all the operational issues. It is amazing the airline hasn't ground to a halt!

Look like the issue is keep going. MTJ is currently stucked at SYD due to engine stall issue. The shortage of engine is worldwide issues. MTH is on ground forever in front of hangar, no maintenance work just waiting for engine spare. Hopefully the Malayan Tiger MTG is on time to complete the maintenance check by next week to ease this never ending flip flop.

MH122 has been cancelled so Im guess 9M-MTJ is no quick fix.

If it is an engine issue, it wouldn't be quick fix since MH has PW, QF has GE and there are no spare around the region except from OZ, KE or CZ.

I'm thinking (probably in perverse manner) those frontline MAG people still presevering to keep 'the beast' up and running during these current challenging time / circumstances will no doubt be head hunted in future by other carriers/entities for their 'loyalty' ?!
