I was having conversation with a total stranger (a Japanese) in an onsen in Japan two days ago. Using his limited English, he seems like he knows very little about Malaysia. He was very surprised to learn I was originally from Malaysia as he thought Malaysia is a Muslim country. Interestingly the first city name came out from his mouth was Kota Kinabalu !

Perhaps he (or Japanese in general) know something more about Penang than Malaysia as well.

My opinion is that perhaps tourism industry players including airlines can emphasise more on individual regions, rather than Malaysia as a whole, be cause it seems that outsiders in general are more familiar with certain places than others, despite all located within the same country.

You'd be shock that the tourism agency actually looked for amateur photographers and paid them below market value or 0 pay to do some coverage for Lok Kawi wildlife park and Sepilok. That's how broke the budget is. How i know well my ex schoolmates were complaining about them not getting any pay to do photography on behalf of Sabah Tourism. Engaging proper studio also no budget hiring local amateur also no budget lol. Now how are they gonna pay for daily tv slots ads in NHK, or ESPN if they cant even pay for photography session to update the place.

Lok Kawi isn't exactly the jewel of Sabah. They probably had good intentions with the park but from what I read and hear is that it's not well maintained and the animals look kinda depressed in there. Sepilok and Semenggoh on the other hand are great. Kinabatangan is also another shining star (but the oil palm plantations are way too close to the forest reserve). But I also understand that there are more serious issues to deal with in Sabah and animals aren't the top of their list. Hardcore poverty especially in the East Coast is a huge problem.

Yes cause everything is underfunded. Even the sepilok jungle walk project which was announced in 2003 got halted several times awaiting funding from federal only finishing up in 2022 lol. Lok Kawi is not well taken care off in the same regard. Even the current crocodile issue in east coast, Jabatan lack staff to monitor and also lack funds to provide bounty compensation to local hunters. Catching wild crocodile without permit is an offense.

In the case of Sabah Tourism the budget allocate is just enough to cover staffs salary and some lackluster marketing of 2-3 countries. Sometimes staffs have to fork out own money to do some things. So yea pretty understandable they cant even pay photographers adequately with most of the promotion using old circa photos as much as they could.

Like MH we like to buy grand stuff and then act like it will last for an eternity. Only to get dumbfounded when neighbours have modernized and replaced with the correct stuff unlike ours always bounded by "national agenda".

Oddly enough, I don't think MH's new safety video is cheap. They seem to have money splurging on it with all the cameos and choreography (unless those cameos are doing it pro bono). Could have made a tourism one like SQ instead of a cringe dance video like AA. The one benefit of refurbished 737s is that you don't have to sit through the safety video 😌

I thought the same initially but i found out the ife video was apparently pro bono by some multimedia third party company as a testbed project. Not my cup of tea but again seems to appeal the tiktok crowd with very low attention span. Probably the same crowd eye ogling any attempts of weight saving and lower carbon emissions boeing airbus promotes. 😂

KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 11): The government remains committed to brand Malaysia as a top destination for tourism, with the Visit Malaysia 2020 (VMY2020) campaign targeting to achieve 30 million tourist arrivals.

To support efforts in making VMY2020 a success, the government said it will continue to allocate 50% of tourism tax to the respective state governments.

The government is also allocating RM1.1 billion to the ministry of tourism, arts and culture, including an allocation of RM960 million to drive awareness, promotions and programmes of the VMY2020 campaign.

The government today proposed an allocation of RM2 billion in 2018 Budget as tourism fund to provide loans for operators next year.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said the fund to assist the small and medium-scale enterprises would provide loans at subsidised interest rate of two per cent.

“Of the amount, RM1 billion will be allocated for Tourism Infrastructure Development Fund as soft loans,” he said.

Najib said RM500 million would be used for development and promotion activities through improved tourism facilities, homestay and eco-tourism programmes.

On a MH FB group poster has commented that MH132 (AKL-KUL) is delayed almost every single time and based on their experience no reason is given.

Looking at the data in FR24 it seems that the arrival time of the inbound flight (MH133) is also delayed it doesn’t explain why further delays occur departing from AKL. Does anyone know why this route is so tardy?

Insider's comment: MH does not have enough manpower for ground crew and suffers from severe lack of equipment at the moment. The turnaround time for most MH flight now are just impossible for the limited crew, especially in KUL. A lot of experienced MH ground crew have been poached by ME3, and SQ recently. Good grief when there is any major festival period. CNY and Raya are coming.......

(PS: The actual story is longer and more detailed, but I am not in privy to talk much in public space)

Ground crew or Cabin crew/Engineers? Never heard of ME3 and SQ poaching for ground handlers/passenger handling staff.

Thanks for the reply. Do MH use their own staff in AKL or is it a ground agent. It seems that the turn around times are a few hours or more.
As a regular (weekly) traveller on MH I feel the system creaking with more delays and planes getting turned around quickly. My regular run in KL-Singapore and the closure of Changi's 02c/20c is also causing delays owing to long taxi time to 02R/20L which compounds the issue further.

New info from initial 2 frames, we may see 6-8 frames being brought forward.

Does that mean that they are willing to accept the China NTUs?

Not sure most know these frames to be from ALC. Another being shown was 2 a330-9neo being primed for Q4 2023.

Group CEO disclosing at least 10-12 new aircrafts will be delivered in the end of 2023 with large chunk belonging to the 737-8.

Yes, their widebodies are working very hard - even the A350s are pressed on to Japan/Australia/NZ routes. They are really short of widebodies and this kind of poor fleet planning needs to stop. It seems like they always look at aircraft purchases when an emergency happens because those higher up do not deal with non emergency situations!

AKL ground handling is outsourced. I forgot the name. Yes, the MH current timetable is cracking at its seam, insufficient aircraft, insufficient crew, both ground and air), insufficient engineers. I don't think the management gives two hoots about it. Everyone is staying put just because they have family at home and to put food on the table. I don't expect the current staff (minus the management) who bear the brunt of the passengers/ clients daily, will walk the extra mile for the company and I totally understand this since it is a shithole company to work in.

I just wonder how this will impact safety - if the morale of the whole company is poor, there is a good possibility that safety will be compromised. Lets pray that we don't have another disaster like what MH experienced in 2014.

Pretty much the same on Redcap and OD. Working in the airline industry in Msia, you're either underpaid for the work you did than neighboring peers in Asean, undervalued, not protected, forced to penny count for the company. Then imagine someone from Gulf comes and flashes you rm100-150k to exit your debt bond and monthly non taxable salary in USD, nearly half who are approached would gradually jump. Then the local airlines in msia have to forkout large last min sums to do type rating for the freshies.

Its the same sentiment for the office private business segment with inflation up but salaries and balance life/work not catching up. Client/Customers well being not thought off and hospitality % is degrading.

Only minor leeway we see is Myairline but we'll see how long they can water down.

The Gov after undergoing 4 changes in the meantime is parroting the same autopilot phrase instead of solving the issue hands on.

Seems like MH finally updated their NS23 TYO schedule. MH 36/37 (KUL-HND). No 1AM arrivals and 3 AM departure ex-HND 😅. 5x to HND and 7x weekly to NRT.

MH36 KUL1350 - 2200HND 359

MH37 HND2355 - 0605+1KUL 359

The turnaround time at AKL/PER and some Indian cities are extremely short - it might work on a perfect day with perfect conditions but as you know, nothing is perfect. That's why a lot of PER/AKL/Indian return flights are delayed severely. Doesn't help when MH doesn't really pad their schedules too (i.e. make their flight schedule "longer" so in the event of any delays, it can be absorbed)

Apparently MAB rejigs its management and group structure

Malaysia Airlines parent rejigs leadership team, group structure

Behind paywall: https://www.flightglobal.com/airlines/malaysia-airlines-parent-rejigs-leadership-team-group-structure/151981.article

The move, announced 8 February, will see the formation of three “profit centres”: airlines, aviation services, as well as loyalty and travel services.

MAG says the new operating structure “will enable [it] to deliver its Long-Term Business Plan 2.0 in a more cohesive and unified manner”. It says there will be “greater emphasis” on transparency and accountability, with a clearer financial reporting structure, and envisages each division helping to “diversify the group’s revenue streams beyond its airlines business”.

The group rolled out the second edition of its long-term business plan after successfully restructuring in 2021. Since then, it has gone some way in slashing costs and eliminating its debt, while growing its revenue streams.

MAG chief Izham Ismail says: “While [MAG’s] existing structure has enabled us to be future-proof, we continue implementing a strong and flexible organisational structure that will set the group up for long-term success.”

The units will be headed by respective CEOs, supporting the group-level leadership team. Izham, who was also Malaysia Airlines chief, will continue in his present role, together six other members of the MAG leadership team.

MAG’s airlines portfolio will be headed by Ahmad Luqman Mohd Azmi, who was the group’s operations chief for about five years. Ahmad Luqman was also Malaysia Airlines’ cargo head, with over 20 years in the air cargo sector.

The airlines portfolio will cover mainline operator Malaysia Airlines, low-cost unit Firefly, regional unit MASWings, as well as its religious charter arm Amal.

Meanwhile, the aviation services portfolio will comprise cargo, ground handling, training, as well as MRO operations. Mohd Nadziruddin Mohd Basri, the current CEO of MAG ground services arm Aero Darat Services, will be promoted to helm the division. He will be supported the operating chiefs of the respective services units.

The loyalty and travel services will be headed by Philip See, who was the head of Firefly. He will assume the new role while concurrently retaining his position as group chief sustainability officer in MAG.

Seems like MH finally updated their NS23 TYO schedule. MH 36/37 (KUL-HND). No 1AM arrivals and 3 AM departure ex-HND 😅. 5x to HND and 7x weekly to NRT.

MH36 KUL1350 - 2200HND 359

MH37 HND2355 - 0605+1KUL 359

I really wonder if there wasn't a less unfortunate flight number they can use...

With the impending removal of BNE from MH's network starting NS2023 schedule which to start next month, does MH have other destination to deploy the freed-up 333?
