MAS Privatisation

Recommended Posts

" Interestingly, everyone he meets these days says “we are here to support you”. While he finds solace in their words, he has told them to stop saying that. “Instead, go back to your unit and do something. I have set the direction and strategy, work on it as we have to deliver results.”

These are strong words coming from a soft-spoken man, but he is not mincing his words. “I am watching you, I am referring to the non-performers, and in 100 days if you get a letter from me, that means you are not helping MAS deliver on its promise. If you cannot be part of the team, then you will have to leave,” he says. "

Well, politics role played here. Hope he can perform well.

ironically this came from someone whose been forever in MH, supposedly he should know by now those "non-performers" and still want to give them 100 days to reform?

In fact, ever since MAS was incorporated, the govt has spent more than rm16 billion in bailing it out (or they prefer to call it retsurcturing) throughout the years and the recent was 2 years back when it was sold to Khazanah - which is also a govt agency which have to put in another rm6 billion. Therefore even if MAS/MAB does make some little profit in the next couple of years, it will never be able to pay back all the billions that was used to "restructure" or more so that have been used to bail it out. hence rm 21 billion so far is alot alot of monies that have sunk into MAS/MAB - and one could have stary a brand new airline with that kind of money.

Heard an inside story that our then PM was pissed with the US VP at the time, Al Gore, and instructed MAS to buy the A380 rather than buying any big aircraft from Boeing.

Yes - it is likely to be true as government interference in the airline's decisions is always there.

That was how MAB came about signing the MoU for the B789s.

Now we know why MAB stopped issuing progress reports after Q2 2017....

So this kind of sway or award vs. punishment is actually not unique to China then. Through the media, you can only hear the Chinese government would punish the US or Europe by purchasing either Boeing or Airbus, depending on political interests, but not other governments.

It happened long ago too with Petronas stepping in, paying for MHs sole 743, to facilitate the ditching of RR engines for the aircraft and the eventual switch to P&W powerplants.

How did it work back in those days ? Did Petronas just pay for the bird on MH's behalf (and how are accounts accounted for if so) or did Petronas end up as lessor of a sole aircraft ?

Well those 2x742 (9M-MHI and 9M-MHJ specifically) before the 743 (9M-MHK) belonged to British Airways and it was NTU. So the engine choice was pre-determined by BA, hence BA customer code on the B747-236B. Do you know the political reasons behind the ditching of the RR, Mushrif?

MH sent 9M-MLF from BKI to PER a few weeks ago. Average flying time 5 hours 14 mins according to FR24. Was thinking they only deploy these at max BKI - KUL with average flying time of slightly more than 2 hours. We also have the dreaded 9M-FFF occasionally.

Malaysia Airlines continues to face challenges in over-saturated market

In an interview with AINonline, newly appointed CEO Captain Izham Ismail acknowledged that managing yield proved the carrier's biggest problem in the past, not unlike for most airlines in the region.
"Competition is fierce and poses a serious challenge in particular for shorter haul flights," Izham said.
Despite tough market conditions and stiff competition, Malaysia Airlines claims to have regained market confidence and plans to resume flying to Brisbane starting June 6, operating four times weekly using an Airbus A330-300.
While Izham said Malaysia Airlines does not plan immediately to add any other European destination, various news agencies have reported it would like to resume flying to Amsterdam if it can secure a slot at Schiphol Airport.
Malaysia Airlines expects to have taken delivery of six new A350-900s by early April. Plans call for it to operate four on the twice daily Kuala Lumpur-London route and the other two on Kuala Lumpur-Narita service.

Malaysia Airlines eyes premium passengers to boost yield

KUALA LUMPUR (March 2): Malaysia Airlines Bhd, which is wholly-owned by sovereign wealth fund Khazanah Nasional Bhd, will continue to focus on and drive yield to cushion the airline from rising fuel costs and foreign exchange volatility, says its chief executive officer Izham Ismail.
"Focus will continue to be on delivering yield improvement through growth of premium passenger segments, such as large and small corporations," he said in a statement today.
Izham revealed that the national airline underperformed against budget in the fourth quarter of 2017 (4Q17).

Malaysia Airlines may fly again to US, France

http://www.theborneopost.com/2018/03/22/malaysia-airlines-may-fly-again-to-us-france/

thought AMS would be in the list.

I have met some journalists (reporters?) who simply have no background knowledge of the companies whose events they are covering or writing on. So, when certain reporters asked about MH resuming services to the United States (of all places), I thought that was an odd out-of-the-blue question, like throwing darts in the dark. Why not ask about Amsterdam? Frankfurt? Then, I saw the tagline of the newly launched MH initiative ...

Perhaps planted questions fishing for elaboration on the new CX codeshares to US cities ? :)

Lowest pay rate ever issued on the latest batch of recruited cabin crew with tiring roster issues(plus freshies are now serving 738 and a333s and randomly serving business class pax now) and spinoff Frontline check in under stress and not properly trained by former staffs, not sure how they expect their staffs to provide the best possible hospitality to their customers. Lol
