Resumption of MAS's Previously Axed Routes, Launch of New Routes + Wishlist

Recommended Posts

I've read one of the comment in airliners.net mentioning LAX-MEX was suspended due to objections from both Aeromexico n Mexicana during that time since MH can filled up the premium cabin for that 5th freedom route.

I didn't realise that KLM routes all it's Aussie flights via CAN. I thought the KLM codeshare still appears on flights from KUL to Australia

Well, it's shown as such in the on-board Holland Herald magazine...besides, KLM got into a well-publicised code-share with Etihad (via AUH), no doubt tapping the Aussie-Kiwi markets from the Netherlands...to be honest, I would rather fly EY i.s.o. CZ when going "Down Under"...

I didn't know we flew to soo many places (liek Zagreb, Mexico City, Madrid) under the "First period of unprofitability between 1996 - 2004" ................

Zagreb was done due to prestige reason, Dr. M was on the inaugural. In addition, MAS was catering for the ethnic Croatiains who live in Australia. Some flights from Australia land at KUL at around 8-9pm, the flight to VIE/ZAG would leave at 0010.

Croatia Airlines had an 60 seats agreement (ZAG-VIE) by code-sharing with MAS on the VIE-ZAG sector (MH18 operates KUL-VIE-ZAG) which helped MAS to keep the route going but from what I read was that MAS was initially thinking of withdrawing from Vienna which would also mean Zagreb will also disappear off its route map should that the previous happened. Which did happened in the end as part of their cost-cutting and efficiency drive.
In 1994, MAS started flying to Mexico City between 1994 up until 1998, taking advantage of fifth-freedom rights which allowed it to carry passengers between Mexico City and Los Angeles, enroute to Kuala Lumpur. The onset of 1997 Asian Financial Crisis hit MAS very hard. Mexico City was one of the routes being stopped apart from Brussels, Darwin, Honolulu, Madrid, Munich, and Vancouver.
In 1997, MAS earned a record-breaking RM319 million profit in FY1996/1997. By early 1998, MAS suffered losses of as much as RM260 million.
In 1999: MAS suffered losses of RM700 million in FY1998/1999.
In 2000: MAS cut its losses to RM259 million in FY1999/2000.
In 2001: MAS plunged into further losses of RM417 million in FY2000/2001. The Malaysian government bailed MAS out by buying back the airline for RM1.8 billion at more than twice the market value.
In 2002: MAS suffered further losses of RM836 million in FY2001/2002. With these losses, it cut many unprofitable routes, such as Brussels, Darwin, Honolulu, Madrid, Munich, and Vancouver. At the same time, Tan Sri Azman Mokhtar's BinaFikir carried out a Wide Asset Unbundling (WAU) turnaround plan for MAS. MAS's RM7 billion debt was put under a special purpose vehicle called Penerbangan Malaysia Berhad (PMB).
By 2004, the skies is clear again. MAS recorded its then-highest profit in FY2003/2004 of RM461 million. However, it turned gloomy very fast. In 2005,MAS reported a record loss of RM1.3 billion. Thus begun the era of the famous snack box by Idris Jala. :)

If I remember correctly, only the first few years of MH saw consistent profits. After that, the politicians exercised their considerable power and influence and MH was never a commercial entity again. That is why their shares are now worth only 30+ sen...

Checking the schedule to PEK in mid May, only MH360 and MH361 is available. Reduction of flight frequency in the pipeline due to the aftermath of MH370?

Probably due to a sharp drop in forward booking... anyway, load will eventually pick up again, just like the Mainland China-Japan traffic.

Malaysia Airlines Reduces Beijing Service from May 2014

Malaysia Airlines from 01MAY14 is reducing Kuala Lumpur – Beijing operation from 2 to 1 daily, as the airline did not reopen the reservation for the 2nd daily MH318/319 service. Reservation for MH318/319 (previously as MH370/371) was closed since late-February 2014.

MH360 KUL1800 – 0020+1PEK 333 D

MH361 PEK0130 – 0740KUL 333 D

MH will operate one-off MH318/319 service on 29MAY14.

Hopefully Air China will takeover the sector of MH318/319 like the previous one that was suspended around 2012.

At this hour, MH must as well send 738.

I don't think that the plane might not have the range to reach Beijing

The initial go-team went to Beijing on a B738.

Go team did not fill up the aircraft. Longer range possible on (much) smaller payload.

Given number of chinese pax booking on mh, sending 738 could be feasible in range and reduce thier loss.

Despite MH is having monopoly on KUL-PEK, on a recent MH360, EY load was below 50%
