"Malaysia Airlines Celebrates 40 Years of World Renowned Malaysian Hospitality

Kelana Jaya, 01 October 2012 : Malaysia Airlines today celebrates its 40th anniversary of Malaysian Hospitality delivered to millions of guests from the day it took off as Malaysian Airline System Berhad on 1 October 1972.

The national flag carrier of Malaysia had its journey then mandated by the government of Malaysia to fulfill five national obligations.

  1. To provide the people of Malaysia with an efficient and profitable air transport system which enhances the standing of the nation and the policies of the government.
  2. To develop an efficient domestic service within Malaysia which also directly links Sabah and Sarawak with Peninsular Malaysia and contributes to the economic and social integration of the country as a whole
  3. To select, train and develop local personnel using the most up-to-date and appropriate managerial techniques.
  4. To provide simultaneously competitive and profitable international services which support Malaysia's trade, tourism and other activities.
  5. To contribute meaningfully to national aspirations and foster an organization which is in harmony with the multi-racial objectives of Malaysia.

Today, from its humble beginnings with a modest fleet strength of 6 Boeing 737-200 jets, 9 Fokker Friendship 27 and 3 Britten Norman Islanders, the airline has now grown to be the undisputed flying ambassador of Malaysia spreading its wings to 76 destinations across the globe.

It flies an average of 37,000 passengers on around 300 flights daily using an evolving fleet of the most advanced jet aircraft, delivering 5-star airline service through the world’s Best Cabin Staff.

At the event today in Kelana Jaya to commemorate 40 years of Malaysian Hospitality, the national carrier’s Group Chief Executive Officer Ahmad Jauhari Yahya paid tribute to the founding fathers for their vision to evolve a truly national airline to deliver the government’s promise of an organisation that contributed to the economic growth of Malaysia and also developing a highly skilled workforce from amongst the locals who are much sought after now globally.

“Over the years, Malaysia Airlines has seen much success, many highs and some lows. Today, Malaysia Airlines is synonymous for its Malaysian Hospitality or MH brand. MH is not just our airline code. ‘MH’ is Malaysian Hospitality,” he said.

“We are now known globally for this exclusivity, and we pay tribute of this success to the thousands and thousands of Malaysia Airlines employees, whom over the years and till today have worked together to demonstrate Malaysian Hospitality,” he added.

The airline has built itself a strong brand name in the aviation industry for superior service and flight safety since 1 October 1972. It holds a lengthy record of service and best practices excellence, receiving more than 100 awards in the last 10 years from international bodies such as the UK based independent research consultancy firm, Skytrax.

This year, Malaysia Airlines marked the entry of its first A380 into the airline’s fleet by having its 5-Star Airline status renewed by Skytrax. The recognition comes at a time of great change within the national airline of Malaysia as it embarks on a series of improvements to repositioning it as a premium carrier.

This includes a thorough process to upgrade the momentum of 5-Star quality service delivery across all customer touch-points of the airline.

At its home base in KL International Airport, Malaysia Airlines’ First and Business class hospitality facilities in its flagship International Golden Lounge have been totally refitted to deliver a true 5-Star Lounge experience with many new and exciting amenities and services offered to customers.

To commemorate the 4 decades of flying as Malaysia Airlines and delivering the world renowned Malaysian Hospitality, the national flag carrier will launch a series of year-long activities to celebrate the 40 years of support from customers and staff.

Ahmad Jauhari provided a sneak preview of the delights by stating, “For the next 12 months, expect special commemorative gifts on flights, special menus and surprises at the Check-in and at Boarding. We’ll have open days for guests to see ‘behind-the-scenes’ operations at our engineering hangar, a special flight for underprivileged children and more. Also look forward to one of our aircraft that will be painted with our special ‘40 years of Malaysian Hospitality’ livery, an extra special guest experience for our customers who get to fly in that plane”.

He also added that, “Malaysia Airlines formal alliance membership of oneworld will be completed soon and the national carrier will start flying as part of the alliance by the turn of the year. The prospect of being able to offer improved global coverage and connectivity through an expanded network of great airlines to Malaysia Airlines’ guests is indeed very exciting. Our customers, in particular members of Enrich loyalty programme, will benefit from increased rewards and recognition whilst enjoying more seamless air travel options”.

This full membership in the alliance will improve the airline’s brand awareness amongst the alliance members’ customers and enhance load factors through additional partner traffic. These in turn will drive the hub connectivity to facilitate Malaysia Airlines global reach through oneworld’s network of some 800 destinations in 150 countries. The membership will be among the significant catalysts that will complement the airline’s efforts to win back customers and become a profitable preferred premium carrier as outlined in its Business Plan revealed on 7 December 2011."

Btw, why is it now 40 years, when back in the late 90s, we had "50 years Enriched"? ...So suddenly, after celebrating 50 years back in '97, they decided to hand over much of history to SQ and restart the clock to 1972?

Strange...

In fact, for instance, there was already M'sian hospitality before MSA in Malaysian Airways.

Maybe... just maybe Airasia ran away with the pre-72 history as well during the failed collaboration...

MH insiders - which plane will wear the special 40th anniversary livery? A 738 or a repainted 772?

Really hope one of our A380 will be painted the special 40th anniversary livery + retro color..its mean after 40 years in service MH able to get a super big jumbo as their fleet.

A bit "syiok sendiri" celebration. 40 years, and I'm not entirely sure if it's an airline we are truly proud of.

A funny anniversary to make a hoo hah about. It would be more appropriate to celebrate the 50th Golden Anniversary. Interesting to note that SQ did not find it apt to celebrate its 40th anniversary.

Perhaps they foresee that there wont be any 50th anniversary to celebrate later on.

40th... even the number isn't very good because it begins with 4 haha... that is why they are not celebrating. Besides, there isn't much to celebrate on the 40th...

MH did celebrate its 50th anniversary...remember the 50 years enriched logo at the rear of the 772s etc about 15 years ago? But now they conveniently forgot that event and its...hey, back to 40 again.

Maybe its 40 years of the "MH" IATA code as opposed the airline. Before that, it was "ML".

They really should find a way to franchise this age defying ....... scam ? :)

I'm positive there are very many aunties (and uncles) who will part with their pension funds in return for a shot at the proverbial fountain of youth middle age

Guys just wanted to ask does airline have full freedom to choose their IATA codes? Why some starts with numeric (9M, 9V, 3K) while others starts with alphabet?

On their FB page, they posted a reply to a question if there will be special fares to "commemorate" this special occasion, so stay tuned. Shouldn't they launch the promotions DURING the launch above? PR fail?

Someone rewriting history ?! :D

PETALING JAYA: Captain Hassan Ahmad had to hold back tears when recounting the moment he taxied a Singapore-bound Boeing 727-200 out of the then Subang International Airport on Oct 1, 1972.

If he really was in that 727-200, no amount of tears could have spared him the embarassment of piloting the wrong plane

Most journalists also are not able to distinguish between tarmac, apron, runway or taxiway.....in many cases, pax board the plane on the runway.

Maybe Tan Sri Red One will take up on that, will help reduce aircraft turnaround time from the 20 minutes nowadays :D

THEY say life begins at 40. This is the time when some choose to lift their foot off the accelerator to enjoy what they have achieved, and some begin to re-prioritise their lives.

A group of former employees of Malaysia Airlines (MAS) they are certainly not 40 years old met for a game of golf and had a sumptuous lunch on Monday to mark the airline's 40 yearsanniversary. To them it was an important landmark because it was on that day four decades ago that MAS broke away from Malaysia-Singapore Airlines to chart its own flight path.

More than 100 people had lunch together and reminisced about their days at the airline. Those at the lunch included Tan Sri Saw Huat Lye,Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Abdul Rahman (first and second GM/MD of MAS respectively), Datuk Kamarudin Ahmad, Datuk Resham Singh and Datuk Ahmad Don.

They had reasons to celebrate.

Amid all the turbulent years of falling into private hands and later back to the Government, this airline has carried a great number of passengers across the globe. Although it is undergoing restructuring, it is still flying unlike several other carriers that began about the same time.

Many travellers have fond memories of flying with MAS and the one thing that continues to captivate many is the big smiles and hospitality of its crew. Despite its ups and downs, MAS was accorded three Skytrax awards again this year, including World Best Cabin staff 2012,

There must be something that the crew and MAS are doing right.

And at 40, MAS is beginning to build a new fleet that comprises the A380 to fight competition although it would in the red much of this and next year, so say the bosses at MAS.

Interestingly at 40, there is still talk that MAS may be taken private once again. There is a long-standing rumour that MAS parent Khazanah Nasional Bhd would want to do a “Proton” i.e. sell its MAS shares to a businessman.

Some say the suitors may include Middle Eastern investors. Others sayTan Sri Ahmad Johan of Nadi Sdn Bhd is keen to acquire a stake in MAS. His name has long been linked with a possible MAS sale, but it should be noted that he has partnered Indonesia's Lion Air to set up Malindo Airways, a low-cost airline that will begin operations on May 1 from KLIA2.

At this point, any talk of MAS having a new controlling shareholder is mere rumour. However, come Saturday there is likely to be a retreat with some MAS union leaders. Ahmad Johan and Aziz have been linked to this.

The venue of the retreat is said to have changed three times from Rompin to Bukit Tinggi and now it will be held at a hotel near MAS office in Subang.

Aziz did clarify that it was a “brainstorming meeting”. “They (the unions) want to know what's now and what's the future of the industry,” he said.

MAS is rebuilding itself once again. A lot has to be improved and even its directors are going help out.

MAS still has a good brand. Its safety and security standards are respectable, and the A380 is a great morale booster. The enhancements in efficiency are slowly showing results in some areas.

Those within MAS can help by improving their performance and staying united. A lot more can be achieved if they are all on the same page.

Another retreat is on the cards after Saturday, but this will involve the MAS management as they map out the airline's flight path to 2030.

Actually this 40th anniversary is a sad event.

Those pioneers who attended the party should be sad that what they had built up in the early years was destroyed by one man.

What has MH to show after 40 years? Right now, its commercial viability is questionable. It is sick and bankrupt. It would have been wound up long ago if the government had not been its owner.

Maybe that was the REAL reason why one of the pilots was in tears!
