Airports that you can walk to downtown

Recommended Posts

I think you can walk from Ngurah Rai to Kuta , if Kuta counts as downtown

This is proven by my own experience. Me and bunch of friends stay in Kuta for 5 days (we r all undergrad students during that time).

We surf and party like no tomorrow. Till we end up penniless! (only left Rp 150k for airport tax). So we walk to the airport!

Isaac,

Hey man, I am a foreigner although I like to think of Sabah as my second home as I have visited almost every year for the past ten years and will be on an MAS A380 in February en route to BKI. Have done a fair bit of shopping in Sunny supermarket for food items to bring back to England. I think the halfway point to Api Api is the new Tanjung flyover. Used to get some good pics from the old racing stables especially if the planes were taking off over the city.

Hello there :) Yes. There is indeed a flyover but I am not too sure what its name is though. Turn left at the traffic light and you'll reach Sutera/Sembulan area first.

Somewhere near the old racing stables ? Last time most people went to Jalan Selangor. I have not gone there for a few years already but judging from the pictures posted in the BKI thread in the Observation Hill sub-forum, looks like everyone still go there to get pictures. There was a while that the place was a mess during the BKI LCCT new terminal construction. I think that was the last time I went there. There were muds everywhere. Good memories nonetheless. I miss the BKI T1 old terminal. There was an empty space on the Gardenia Restaurant floor (I think it was 2nd floor??), on the far left of the original T1 terminal. The place was a food court in the early 90s. Some of the sliding windows can actually be open and you can get really decent pictures there too. I spent a lot of my free time there growing up :D

Rio De Janeiro. Earlier this year I arrived at Santos DuMont airport from Sao Paulo, walked out of the terminal onto an overhead bridge to cross a busy street, and on the other side I walked another few hundred meters and arrived at the Petrobras office for my meeting.

Thanks Isaac. Yes I remember going down Jalan Selangor and taking some pics in 2008. I cannot work out how to upload them to the forum. I would be happy to post them.

When ready, bro? Passing DOH again next February on way to IST & KEF, thanks to recent QR sale. :)

Provided that the airport have luggage storage facilities, and of course a nice weather condition. Taking a nice scenic stroll to the town would be nice. An added experience indeed.

Sorry to burst your bubbles slightly, just wondering if are you able to use your real name as your user name? This is because 95%+ of us actually uses our real name and it is one of the conditions of the forum?

the New Doha Intl Airport wont be open till mid next year. The new arrival terminal that I mentioned is a totally new one, separate from the departure. Just next to the corniche. It will be closed once NDIA open.

Yeah, saw the promo for KUL-IST RM1900++.

You can upload your pictures to Photobucket, ImageShack etc and just post the links here. And by the way, as SV said, you do need to use your real name here. Just send a PM to Gavin :drinks:

Toronto city's Billy Bishop airport is separate by a channel. One can get to they city by catching a ferry across, vice versa.

Billy Bishop CYTZ, Hub for Porter Airlines. How close it is to the city

Is there no other way to get to Billy Bishop apart from the ferry crossing ?

None obvious from the pics above

Seriously, how do they get the 'essential' stuff to that place - eg fuel, food etc ? :)

KTM is very much walkable to town. In fact just outside the airport perimeter, a walking backpacker can find places to sleep & eat already!

Brave.... but not because of the traffic :p I love Cidade Maravilhosa to death, but sometimes get the feeling I might get robbed by a dodgy carioca :p

Tanjung Aru 'town' only lah

Die loh if walk all the way to town proper (though I would not be surprised if it has been done before) :D

It is fully a town proper you know, got its own postcode, bus 'interchange', market, KFC, hotels, schools, restaurants, supermarket, balai polis, public toilets, post office, newspaper printer, 4D outlets, petrol station, a church (used to be cinema), & even 'casinos' :D

Yes, I think VTE can walk to downtown, SGN can walk to District 1, MNL can walk to Makati.

MLE cannot walk, must take boat.

SGN to District 1 ? That's quite a long track along busy roads with scooters...wouldn't recommend it... :nea:

TOS in Norway is doable and very quiet...about 20mins to the Scandic hotel...

CPH in Denmark is OK

WAW in Poland can be done, although it's about a 10kms walk along Zwirki i Wiguri...(road 634)...

Why yes, silly me :)

It also has an airport terminal, a railway terminal, an award winning 5-star resort (real 5*, no play play one) with yachting marina, big shopping mall, one of the state's top premier school .......

In time to come us 'KK folks' will need to go there to share 'their' library :)

However, used to have it's own racing track and very inviting beaches too, but ...... :)

old BTU airport, located at the centre of the town

bandara.jpg

This is definitely unquestionable. Shame nobody submitted it to the Guinness Book of Records while it was still active.

An airport that was literally in the heart of the town.

Rumors have it that a new bridge / tunnel will connect the current BTU airport across the river. If this falls through, distance will be around 2KM from terminal to town center :D

You forgot to mention Sugar Bun! I preferred it when the stalls opposite Waikiki apartments were proper hawker stalls :sorry:
