11 September 2012

Airbus and the world’s largest A320 customer AirAsia announced that the airline will become the first operator of the A320 with ‘Sharklets’ when they take delivery of the first A320 equipped with these fuel-saving wing-tip devices at the end of this year. The aircraft exhibited on static and flying display at the ILA Berlin Air Show is the flight test aircraft for CFM engines and will also be delivered to AirAsia in 2013.

"The A320 has played a key role in our success, enabling us to offer our passengers the lowest fares possible and completely redefine short haul travel in Asia.” said Tony Fernandes, AirAsia Group CEO. “Now we are looking forward to become the first airline in the world to start operating this most fuel-efficient aircraft.”

“AirAsia is one of the fastest growing, most innovative and well-respected brands in the airline industry” said John Leahy, Airbus Chief Operating Officer, Customers. “It is a great endorsement that they have chosen our latest, fuel-saving aircraft of our successful A320 Family”.

This is also a test aircraft, isn't it? I remember Airbus mentioning that there will be four test and certification aircraft for the sharklets.

haha..will boeing sue airbus like apple did??

I think that Aviation Partners (AP) are already doing that. And Airbus sued AP earlier too. Not sure when the legal cases will come up though...

ILA: AirAsia ready for 'Jaws' debut

AirAsia is referring to its Airbus A320s fitted with sharklet wing-tips as "Jaws", because they will be taking "a big bite out of our costs", said Zaman Ahmad, AirAsia head of customer experience and technology, at a ceremony at ILA yesterday to announce the Asian low-cost carrier will become the world's first A320 sharklet operator in December.

Hope it's not taking a big bite out of our pockets.

AirAsia plans A320 rollovers

AirAsia will begin to roll over its early delivery Airbus A320s for new aircraft in a couple of years, says Zaman Ahmad, the airline's head of customer experience and technology, speaking at ILA to announce AirAsia will become the first operator of an A320 fitted with sharklet wing-tips.

"Probably from 2014-2015 we will start rolling over the first A320s depending on [aircraft] utilisation," says Ahmad.

The Flightglobal Pro premium news and data service shows AirAsia began taking deliveries of CFM56-powered A320s in November 2005.

At 14h, AirAsia has one of the highest average daily utilisations of any carrier worldwide, while its A320s typically fly eight to nine sectors a day.

AirAsia has 116 A320s in service and is taking about 20 a year from its orderbook of 375 A320s, says Ahmad. The average age of its A320s is eight, he adds.

How is the average age of AK's A320 8 years old ? This works out that they took delivery of all 116 A320 in 2005.

Looks nice AK in A320 sharklet. When this bird will deliver to AK?

Its first flight was on 6 December. Delivery is usually within 3 to 4 weeks of the first flight. However, its the Christmas and New Year season, Perhaps it will only come after the New Year holidays.
