PPL in Malaysia [Hobby]

Recommended Posts

Hi all, hoping to get some insight into obtaining a PPL license in Malaysia. Some background :

I'm a recent Engineering graduate and finally have the freedom (and finances) to take up powered flight training. I'm from Bintulu, where the ex-GGIFA school was. Since they've closed down, I was thinking of other alternatives around M'sia.

Important factors for me are duration of the training and cost. I'm looking to set aside no more than 6 months to gain a PPL. I've already done some "taster" flights while in the UK and used to be part of my university gliding team.

I'm open to flight schools outside the country as well if anyone has recommendations :)

I've already looked up the DCA list for PPL training, however most places I called don't seem keen to offer 1 to 1 tuition ... or have rather inflexible times. I would also prefer to pre-study any materials I can from books instead of taking classroom sessions.

Hi Timothy,

since you are from Bintulu, maybe you can consider to join Sabah Flying Club based in WBKK.

So far I only have an estimated figure from Sabah Flying Club, and was given RM35k for completion of their PPL program. Still waiting for a proper breakdown and more info, ie: if costs change for 1 on 1 tuition and if taking the course full time or part time will make a difference.

Anyone else care to join me ? :p

Hi Timothy, I recently obtained my PPL in UK where I live. As a regular visitor to KK I am hoping to take a flight whilst there next February. Did you find out what aircraft they use for training C150/152 perhaps?

Nope :( Apparently their training Capt was giving joyrides in Lahad Datu during Merdeka Week. Got his hp and going to try a call tomorrow.

on the website it looks like a C152. I was in the UK before and could go back to do a PPL. Mind sharing if your experience was good ? And if so, which school did you go to ?

Will update if they provide equipment list :)

A 2 month + update.

Have not even gotten a taster flight yet. Sabah Flying Club Cessna has been grounded due to faulty instrumentation. Feedback is very slow, and currently considering Aust as an alternate.

Timothy, Sabah Flying Club is now based in Kuala Penyu airfield for their training right. Always look out for them in fine weather while descending into WBKK. There were days when i spotted 2 aircraft. Most of the time i spotted only one.

Why dont you come to SZB. There's aplenty of flying clubs here. Take your pic. ESB, RSFC, Elite, Subang FC etc. Or if you want to complete it within your stipulated time maybe you can consider APFT based in Kota Bharu.

Hi all ,

Resurrecting this topic 8 years on ! Still haven't gotten started on PPL and with the recent COVID19 , things are going very slow work-wise. Sliver lining is a possible break (career wise) to pursue this 🙂

Re-looking into getting a PPL in Malaysia, thankfully MFA now states on their website such a course would take 3 months full-time. Wondering if anyone has other suggestions ? Open to options such as Australia as well IF there is a clear advantage in doing so.

If I'm not mistaken from the looks of things only FAS udara flying club & Air adventure flying club are the ones still active (not during this MCO season of course).

You can check out their websites, though FAS udara website looks a bit dated.
