Putrajaya Red Bull Air Race 17-19 May 2014

Recommended Posts

KUALA LUMPUR, July 19 (Bernama) -- Malaysia's administration capital Putrajaya will be home to the 2014 Red Bull Air Race World Championship, which is expected to draw over 80,000 local and international spectators.

Red Bull Air Race managing director Erich Wolf said the international series had grown to become a major tourism draw for cities where it was held, mainly held over water near cities, airfields or natural wonders.

The series had, in the past, visited Abu Dhabi, Perth, New York and Rio de Janeiro where it attracted more than 100,000 spectators at the locations, he said at the signing ceremony of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Red Bull Air Race and Aerolomba Sdn Bhd.

Wolf signed the MoU on behalf of Red Bull Air Race while Aerolomba, a company that facilitates the coordination of logistics, accommodation and introduction to local businesses and organisations, was represented by its director, Mohd Halizi Mohamad.

Looking into this as I've never been to a RedBull event let alone an air-race !

Tickets are split into Prelim (Saturday), Final (Sunday) or Weekend (Both days). Anybody has hints on which is best to go to for spotting ?

Also it shows the race as ending @ 3am on Monday morning ! Is this when the actual racing ends or is it just an after party ?

The race planes arrived KUL on 1st May, flown in by Atlas Air B744F N476MC from Graz via Sharjah. I guess by now, the RB helicopter and race planes are already assembled.

Would be nice to see them doing test flights ahead of practice day and activities at the race airport. We had the chance to get upclose with the planes a few years back...

Somebody (I guess the Malaysian pilot Dato Halim Othman) was practicing in SZB yesterday. The distinctive drone of the acrobatic plane was audible even in the office.

The is an Extra EA300L displayed outside of Pavillion, KL. Most likely belongs to Les Vorosmarthy, since the rego is N264EX, now painted in Red Bull c/s.

Who's going and which tickets you have bought? I can see that only Zone A tickets are for sale online...RM169 for weekend. Would like to know if there are other cheaper zones or with a better view if all zones are similar priced.

Mine is the RM85 for just qualifying day. Zone A (Ticketpro.com.my)

Saw someone on lowyat selling for RM50 Zone D , but ticket dosen't look like the one I have (no color, barcode) so abit doubtful.

Not bad. Went on both days, qualifying was somewhat quiet but race day felt like a giant Red Bull-infused picnic at Zone A. Just needed some vodka to get it running properly, or jaeger.

Slight hiccup at Gemilang Bridge on Day 1 when ticket holders stuck on the wrong side of the bridge couldn't get to Zone A across the bridge because it was closed but were denied entry to Zone B despite no shuttle bus arriving after 40 minutes. Only after a lot of pissed off ticket holders made their frustration known were we allowed in to Zone B. Day 2 went smoother, thankfully, though Zone B has better spotting areas.

Rain did not deter on Day 1 and slight drizzle was ignored on Day 2.

How was the crowd for the Red Bull air race.

Cheers.

A 5/10 rating for Qualifying Day IMHO.

Will post what little pictures I have tommorow. But overall I'd say the event could do with much better publicity. ie: Free shuttle service within Putrajay that day, but with only ONE sign, which is at one of the bays @ Putrajaya Sentral. Only mention of this service is on putrajaya council website posted just the day BEFORE. Had to search as Help Desk had no idea when the shuttle was going to turn up/interval.
