Royal Brunei 787 Dreamliner

Bandar Seri Begawan - Royal Brunei Airlines (RBA) intends to take the delivery of the first Boeing 787 Dreamliner by August next year, the airline said yesterday.

"We have no confirmed dates for the B787 delivery at the moment. However, we can say that we are working towards the first delivery by August 2013," a spokesperson said in an email to The Brunei Times.

News about the much-awaited aircraft delivery appeared in there-cent travel trade newspaper, TTG Asia, in which RBA Deputy Chairman Dermot Mannion spoke of the flag carrier's initiative to reposition itself as a "boutique" airline.

"We have been restructuring our business in recent months, and are now refocussing as a boutique airline with strong regional franchise, operating only to strategic longhaul destinations," Mannion told TTG Asia.

"I am confident that as we migrate our longhaul product to the 787, we can offer a higher quality of service to meet our passengers' aspirations."

The report also said that RBA's daily Melbourne flights to and from Bandar Seri Begawan would be linked to the airlines' daily Dubai-London service.

"The daily and same-time (Melbourne) service through Brunei to the regional and longhaul networks will be an attractive product for Australia, the Middle East and London," Mannion said, while hinting that there were plans to establish similar network extensions to destinations such as Manila, Singapore and Hong Kong.

RBA first announced its plans to get the Boeing 787 Dreamliners in July 2007, with an initial deadline for acquisition of the plane by 2009.

Touted as the aerospace giant's most fuel efficient aircraft, the twin-engine Dreamliner is the first mid-sized commercial plane capable of flying long-range routes.

The plane's green credentials are also expected to help RBA comply with the European Union's controversial carbon trading scheme, which requires all carriers taking off from or landing in the EU to purchase emission permits.

'The global aviation industry emits only three per cent of the world's greenhouse gas emissions. For our part, Royal Brunei Airlines is already committed to reducing emissions by investing in new and more fuel efficient aircraft," the national airlines said in an e-mail sent to The Brunei Times last month.

"We will achieve a reduction in our carbon footprint with the introduction of our latest technology (incorporated into the) Boeing 787 aircraft in 2013," RBA said.

In November 2010, then RBA CEO Robert Yang said that the airlines had ordered the aircraft directly through Boeing, commenting that it was a "complex arrangement". He had also shared the preparation that had to be made in anticipation of the delivery of the new aircraft.

"To accept the aircraft, there (are) a lot of plans that we need to do. We need to make sure that the team is ready engineering-wise, cabin crew-wise and so on," Yang said.

The more than three year delays in deliveries of the Dreamliner globally have been attributed to design issues, an overextended supply chain and other issues faced by the American multinational.

Despite the setbacks, the aircraft is already making headway in the industry. It recently won one of the aerospace industry's most prestigious honours for excellence, the Robert I Collier Trophy, awarded for the year 2011.

"Built largely with lightweight composite materials, combined with a host of brealcthrough technologies, the 787 Dreamliner is 20 per cent more fuel efficient than similarly-sized aeroplanes, allowing airlines to open new, non-stop routes preferred by the travelling public," a press release circulated by PR Newswire said.

"The aeroplane is also much easier for airlines to maintain and sets new standards in environmental performance. Sixty customers have ordered 868 Dreamliners, making it the fastest-selling wide-body aeroplane in commercial aviation history."

Although there might be a chance that RBA may not get the B787 by then, but I think at least 1 unit for HRH is confirm. Hopefully they will do a few touch and go at BKI when they got the aircraft.

BKI has always been the training ground for BI's crew to cut their teeth at when something new joins the fleet :)

Yipee !

Not surprised, in the 80's they ordered 3x B757-200s and one of it V8-RBC, which was the last B757 for the airline was used as a Royal craft. She stayed with RBA for not too long and was sold to Uzbekistan government and still flies with them.

Not quite true. I'm no royalty but have been on -RBC a few times. What happens is that sometimes the aircraft is taken from its commercial schedules to operate for the Sultan's Flight. Just like when the 737-200 stepped in (before the days of 727s operated by Sultan's Flight) or more recently, when BI's A320 flew the Sultan & entourage to Hua Hin in Thailand and to Ipoh, from BWN.

Sorry I thought I read somewhere about the HRH B787. :sorry:

That's OK - we thought you had brokered the deal.

There was earlier a post elsewhere on a model of the 787 in BI colours for the royal flight. The model was spotted in a royal regalia museum in bwn. It was just a model, not unlike MH's 772LR when MH signed a LOI with Boeing.

MH ordered 772LR?

Yes. Back then in 1996 it was called Boeing 777-200X. Under Tajudin Ramli's vision, the aircrafts were meant to be used for direct flights to North America. He did mentioned KL-Chicago non-stop. :D

7Late7 is too small for 772 replacement as it is in the same class of B767. A350 or B77W would be the right size. However, B777 technology is almost 20 years old now. Would be nice for a more efficient type of aircraft with latest technology (e.g. A350 or B777X).

MH to become one of the first customer for 777X?

IMO,787 is much suitable for MH business, can increase flight frequency if there's a high demand to certain routes.i'll go for frequency over capacity, just my 2cents. correct if i'm wrong :)

Royal Brunei plans long-haul product upgrades while refocusing short-haul to compete against LCCs

Royal Brunei Airlines (RBA) aims to significantly improve its long-haul product next year following the introduction of its Boeing 787 fleet as part of a new strategy to focus on brand in the long-haul market and price in the short-haul market, where it faces increasing competition from LCCs. The long-haul product enhancements will include 18 lie-flat business class seats on the 787s, which will be placed by early 2014 on the carrier’s London, Dubai and Melbourne routes as well as potentially to Hong Kong and Shanghai.

RBA is now slated to receive its first of five 787s in Aug-2013, as CAPA first reported in Nov-2011. The carrier will be the first in Southeast Asia to receive the 787. RBA deputy chairman Dermot Mannion said on the sidelines of the CAPA Airlines in Transition CEO Summit last week that the carrier plans to place into service three 787s by the end of 2013 with the final two being delivered in 1Q2014.
