Firefly celebrates fifth year with expansion plans and more planes and revival of jet operation

Recommended Posts

Ppl would start quoting just this line out of context, and the joke factor would be forgotten. I've seen ppl writing:

"Pilots are paid too much. All they do is taxi to the runway, take off, switch on autopilot and then bitch about the company for the next two hours." - Tony Fernandes

Tony F will by kissing the pilot's butt for taking charge when the autopilot goes awry.

This share swap was a very effective way for TF to kill off Firefly because it was seriously starting to compete aginst AirAsia. All that hard work to build up Firefly's jet operations have gone down the tube.

Arrogant as always. Maybe AK pilots should set a day and not reporting for work all together.

Power to the working class!

It was just a joke, shouldn't read too much into it.

+1 :)

The article also starts off with

Niall O'Keeffe, managing editor of sister title Flight International, sends this report:

Few were spared when jovially combative AirAsia chief Tony Fernandes addressed Airbus's Innovation Days event in Toulouse yesterday.

If he could take a swipe at the German Chancellor (notoriously strict) then I think he could take a roundabout way of complimenting Airbus's automation.

Doubt it. Unless MH board is seriously incompetent and hailed TF as their master straight after share swap...

The ceasing of Firefly operatons was part of the "collaboration". It seems MAS did most of the compromising in that share swap. Firefly would have been a very effective way for MAS to re-gain market share, especially domestically and then, eventually, regionally. After only a short time, the FY jet operations were already a viable alternative from AK in the travelling public's mind.

MH/FY is a GLC with almost unlimited resources could make billions of losses and expect to be bailed out. AK been a private enterprise don’t have the same privileges. TF been the CEO of AK, it is his corporate duty and personal interest to neutralize threat to AK survival.

There was no doubt FY jet operation lowered AK yield and load but had negatively impact MH load, yield, overhead and unit variable cost at the same time. If FY jet operation was not terminated with or without TF instigation, MH financial will be even worse off than current status.

IJ, TF, etc come and go but hemorrhage at MH continues. MH may implement BTP XXX but doing JL or Swissair is almost inevitable.

Like TF said, FY was killed by MH and themselves. MH was initiating FY to directly compete with AK but had also virtually competed with himsef...

IPOH: The Government will monitor closely the performance of national airline MAS to ensure it remains competitive in the industry.

Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Husni Hanadzlah said the Government has instructed MAS to submit reports on its future plans and projections for the next five years.

"There is a lot of competition and we have to see which routes are profitable," he said after opening the Kedai Rakyat Spring Bandar in Kampung Tengku Hussein here on Sunday.

For the first time ever, the Govt said they would look into profitable routes, rather than requesting MH to fly those unprofitable or lower yield due to diplomatic relationships.

It is interesting to note that the govt has identified who MAS' real competitors and enemies are:

He noted that competition was high from the aggressive Middle Eastern carriers such as Qatar Airways and Emirates.

“They have lots of funding and their tickets are cheaper,” he said, adding that the Government has agreed to purchase several aircrafts and to lease them to MAS to help them.

The gomen will be subsidizing MH?

With so much gomen assistance, wonder how MH is going fence off meddling from politicians.

For the politicians changing everything is better than changing their ways.

If MH ever planning to rejuv back the idea of LCC i prefer they using the name MASwing instead of Firefly.... :)

MASWings should not be used as it receives subsidies from the government. As such, it should be kept that way to ensure transparency and accountability.

If MH wants to start a true blue LCC, then it should not use any of its existing brands. It should be like SQ (with Scoot) - come up with a new brand and identity. Even though SQ had the Tiger brand, they decided that it was better to have a new brand for their long haul budget carrier. MH should look to doing something similar so that there is no confusion and passengers can set their expectations correctly.

Firefly was a great idea and it should not have been scrapped for domestic routes (and eventually regional routes).

What i mean is only the name.. not the whole structure. They shld streamline the brand either FF or Maswing for turboprop operation, me think :)

I am curious where they will conduct border control in KBR, especially for outbound pax. There doesn't seem to have enough space for that.

I also curious how they will conduct border control for international at KBR. To confirm, chit chat with friend FY's staff at KBR yesterday and they still don't received any news regarding KBR-SIN. Probably system error in FY's web booking that time for KBR-SIN. Check again in web on this morning no more appear.
