Emirates & Dubai General Thread

Recommended Posts

Dubai International Airport has overtaken Hong Kong International Airport as the world’s third ranked airport for international passengers thanks to record-breaking figures in 2012.

The airport operator, Dubai Airports, reported a 13.2% surge in total traffic to 57,684,550 passengers in 2012, with a 13.4% increase in passengers in December 2012 adding to the record figures.

Aircraft movements for 2012 were also up by 5.5% to 344,245 movements in 2012 compared to the 326,318 movements recorded in 2011.

Regionally, South America was the fastest expanding market in terms of percentage growth in 2012 (+99.4%) due to the introduction of Emirates flights to Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro. The Russia & CIS region followed in second place (+36.9%), Australasia (+21.9%) in third spot and GCC fourth (+19.4%). New Emirates flights to Washington, Dallas Fort Worth and Seattle during the year saw North American passenger traffic grow 18.6%, making it the fifth fastest growing region.

India remained Dubai International’s single biggest country destination in terms of passenger numbers. The passenger traffic between Dubai and India continued to show robust growth during the past year, with total passenger traffic rising 7.4% year on year to 7.34 million passengers in 2012. Traffic was bolstered by the introduction of Spicejet, which added new flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Kochi and Ahmedabad to Dubai. Air India Express, Indigo and Emirates also added new flights and destinations during the year.

Freight volumes rebounded towards the end of last year, helping total volumes for 2012 rise 3.9% to 2,279,624 tonnes from 2,194,264 tonnes recorded in 2011. In December, cargo volumes climbed 6.5% from 189,593 tonnes in December 2011 to 201,949 tonnes in December 2012.

“Moving into the top three is a fantastic achievement for Dubai International and we now have London’s Heathrow and the number one spot firmly within our sights. The opening of Concourse A, the world’s first purpose-built A380 facility, has given us the room to maintain our strong growth into the new year, with a forecast of 65.4 million passengers in 2013,” said Paul Griffiths, CEO of Dubai Airports.

“However, our rapid growth is not without its challenges and we will use the breathing room created by the phased opening of Concourse A to stress test every aspect of our service in the next year and put in place long-term processes that will put Dubai International on track to becoming the best airport in the world in addition to being the busiest,” added Griffiths.

Been to DXB T2 6x..it is spartan enough if compared to the spanking new T3 or the new concourse..but its mile ahead better compared to our LCCT..the annoying part there is no shuttle bus service between T2 and T1/T3. Taxi easily charge you AED40.

EMIRATES ORDERS 50 ADDITIONAL A380S, BOOSTING FLEET TO 140

web.jpgDubai-based Emirates airline has placed an additional order for 50 A380 aircraft, confirming the continued strong demand for very large aircraft in the Middle East that are needed to meet the region’s higher than average traffic growth. The order was signed at a ceremony at the 2013 Dubai Airshow witnessed by His Highness Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed Al-Maktoum, Chairman and Chief Executive Emirates Airline and Group and Fabrice Brégier, Airbus President and CEO.

“The A380 continues to be the flagship of our fleet and after five years in operation it remains highly popular with our passengers,” said HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al-Maktoum, Chairman and Chief Executive of Emirates Airline and Group. “It is still one of the most efficient aircraft to operate today in terms of fuel burn and emissions per passenger, and it gives us the flexibility in some cases to meet passenger demand in slot-constrained markets. This latest order will help us meet both fleet expansion and fleet replacement needs.”

“We value our partnership with Emirates Airline and are pleased to see this getting stronger each day with their A380s flying,” said Fabrice Brégier, Airbus CEO and President. “By strategically placing the A380 at the centre of its business, Emirates is maximizing its leading position with each day of operations. Emirates has understood from the start the A380s advantages in terms of efficiency, economics and passenger comfort. It continues to be a true crowd-puller and contributor to the rapid development of its Dubai hub.”

Following delivery of their first A380 in July 2008, Emirates has now taken delivery of 39 A380s. Their 39th A380 is on Airbus’ static display at the 2013 Dubai Airshow. All Emirates’ A380s are powered by Engine Alliance GP7200 engines.

Since first entering service in 2007, the A380 has joined the fleets of ten world class carriers. The aircraft flies 8,500 nautical miles or 15,700 kilometres non-stop, carrying more people at lower cost and with less impact on the environment. The spacious, quiet cabin and smooth ride have made the A380 a firm favorite with both airlines and passengers, resulting in higher load factors wherever it flies.

The total A380 fleet has accumulated over one million flight hours in almost 140,000 commercial flights. To date some 50 million passengers have already enjoyed the unique experience of flying on board an A380. Every five minutes, an A380 either takes off or lands at one of the 34 airports where it operates today and the network is constantly growing.

Amazing that the last time Emirates made a loss was in 1987 and they have been profitable ever since.

There going to be quite a few beached dugongs about :)

(I think MH's task of disposing off their 380s just got a heck lot more difficult)

I think the ME3 are finally finding out that they cannot grow rapidly continuously.

Qatar is also finding ways to push back aircraft deliveries without penalty. Etihad are facing tough times too. So expect more deferrals.
