So Smokey Bandits will be performing during the airshow as well? :)

Just checked the airshow's official website but it seems the info still not yet updated.

VIDEO: vintage TV show about RSAF

By Greg Waldron on January 27, 2012 3:45 PM

While researching my features that will run in Flight International the week of the Singapore Air Show, I came across this cool retro video of a 1988 Singapore TV series about the RSAF. There is some good footage of a number of types, including the F-5 and A-4. Surprisingly the F-16 doesn't make an appearance - perhaps at the time this type was deemed too sensitive.

For fighter aficionados this year's show looks like pretty slim pickings. The flying display list is short: F-15SG, F-16 C/D, RAAF Roulettes, and the Blair Rebel 3000. In year's past the show offered hardcore displays by aircraft like the F-111, the B-1B, A380, and even Russian types. There could be more flying displays than what's currently listed (I've heard the RMAF's MiG-29 equipped Smokey Bandits will be at the show) but the show organizer seems agonizingly slow about updating the site.

At least the 787 will be on static, but what of Airbus? The RAAF isn't sending a KC-30A, the A400M is needed for tests in Europe, and the A380 is, well, a bit common these days.

I've confirmation from the local newspaper here, The Straits Times Singapore, that the RMAF MIG29N will be participating at the SA2012.

Malaysia's stunt pilots to make airshow debut

THE Royal Malaysian Air Force's premier aerial display team, the Smokey Bandits, will wow spectators with their heart-stopping aerobatics when they make their Singapore debut at next month's Singapore Airshow

The Smokey Bandits to soar in Singapore skies

Monday, January 30, 2012 - 18:38

by Cynthia Blemin

KUALA LUMPUR: For the first time in its 53 years history, the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) will be sending an aerobatics team to the Singapore Airshow.

Popularly known as "The Smokey Bandits", the flight of MiG-29N aircrafts from No 17 Squadron base in Kuantan has been invited by their Singapore counterpart to showcase their flying maneuvers at the airshow to be held at the Changi Exhibition Centre between Feb 14 and 19.

The Malaysian Armed Forces and Singapore Armed Forces (RSAF) have regularly engaged in bilateral and multilateral exercises in the past but this is the first time the RMAF MiG29s will be deployed to the neighbouring island.

A press statement issued by RMAF said "RSAF have in the last two series of Lima, sent their fighters and helicopters to perform in Langkawi. The RMAF also feels it is high time we returned the favour to our southern neighbours."

The five-men aerobatic team will be led by commanding officer Lt Col Mior Nor Badrishah Mohamad, callsign "Ghost", head of training Capt Mohd Azizi Musa "Skinner", executive officer Maj Razali Ahmad Jumali "Vendor", squadron safety officer Maj Nasruddin Khalid "Digi" and standards officer Maj Azri Ahmad "Adiq".

The team travels with a total of 31 engineering technical specialists have performed on numerous occasions at the bi-annual Langkawi International Maritime & Aerospace Exhibitions held over the years and the Brunei Defense Exposition 2011 (Bridex 2011).

Audience at the airshow can look forward to maneuvers done in formation and solo displays, which will be performed in unison to ensure a compact and thrilling sequence.

The term ‘smokey bandit’ was originally coined by visiting foreign air force pilots in reference to the black cloud of smoke generated by the MiG29’s Klimov RD33-3 engines when operating in full military thrust.

In 1997, the RMAF’s MiG-29 squadron made its first appearance in the Langkawi International Maritime and Air Show (Lima 97) in Malaysia and has since become the main attraction at Lima air shows.

The squadron was recently crowned Squadron of the Year 2011 by the Royal Malaysian Air Force and received the 2011 Malaysian Armed Forces Readiness Award.

Does anyone know what plane will be flown in support of the Smokey Bandits ... and also transport the 31 engineering technical specialists?

Singapore Air Show revs up

By Greg Waldron on January 31, 2012 3:23 PM

Spotted some Singapore Air Show posters at Changi Airport MRT station. Quite like the clever 'Top Fun' movie theme they've adopted for the show, although those two Leopard II tanks look as if they are about to run down that family.

Also checked the Air Show web site and so far there is no indication that the two F-22s shown in the poster will be performing a flying display. The F-35 is listed on static, but don't be fooled: it will likely be the 1:1 model version that Lockheed trots out for air shows. My colleague Firdaus (@fhavg) just told me that SIA's last Boeing 747-400 will be on static at the show. That's cool.

Flightglobal will have a big team at the show and a stand as well. We'll be writing plenty of stories for the web site, as well producing an interactive daily. Also keep your eyes out for our show report on Thursday with all the big and small stories from the show.

Have a story idea? Feel free to swing by and tell us about it.

Job opportunities at S'pore Airshow

By Dylan Loh | Posted: 01 February 2012 1856 hrs

SINGAPORE: One thousand new jobs are opening in Singapore's aerospace and aviation sectors.

Half will come from opportunities to be announced at the Singapore Airshow in two weeks' time.

The six-day event starts on February 14, 2012.

Speaking to Channel NewsAsia, the Economic Development Board (EDB) said it expects four in five of these opportunities to go to Singaporeans.

The board said these openings come from 10 projects and joint ventures, among other things.

The activities revolve around maintenance, repair, and overhaul operations, manufacturing and training.

It added that overall investment commitments secured in 2011 will generate some 1,200 new jobs as projects are gradually realised over the next two to three years.

The other half of the 1,000 openings comes from engine-maker Rolls-Royce, which will be recruiting at the Airshow.

Rolls-Royce is still looking to staff vacancies for its S$700 million Seletar Aerospace facility.

Three hundred positions have been filled so far, with the firm looking to hire 500 more employees in the near term.

The Seletar facility is slated to commence operations in the coming months.

EDB assistant managing director Yeoh Keat Chuan said: "We believe that the skill levels right now are quite well-suited to the jobs that we are creating.

"But we look forward in future -- there will be (more) jobs created in the R&D space, in repair and development. And through this, then we may require different skill sets.

"We've launched a new programme, the industrial post-graduate programme, to provide PhD training. The unique aspect of this programme is that graduates, PhD students, can get their training within the company, and earn the PhDs at the same time."

The 2012 Airshow organisers hope deals sealed at the event will match the US$10 billion mark set in the previous show, with no last-minute pull-outs from exhibitors expected.

Mr Jimmy Lau, managing director of Experia Events, organiser of the Singapore Airshow 2012, said: "With the way the economy is sounding out at the moment, it will be a challenge to meet the target.

"But again, Asia Pacific is the only hotspot and the growth market, I think, over the next 10 years. And we know that there are deals coming through and hopefully, they can be sealed during the show."

Job-seekers, businessmen and plane enthusiasts should also have an easier time getting to the event in Changi, with organisers promising increased shuttle service frequencies.

Shuttle buses to the event at Changi Exhibition Centre will start at 8am, half-an-hour earlier than the previous Airshow in 2010.

Some 100 buses will be deployed, and more will be added if there's demand.

They can be boarded from Changi Airport's Terminal 2 and Terminal 3.

To stage an Airshow, organisers say things don't just happen months before the event.

Planning for the next Airshow begins shortly after one edition of it ends -- that's two years' worth of preparations, including trip after trip overseas to court businesses and partners.

With the long lead-up, organisers hope to deliver a high-flying experience for both the public and trade visitors alike.

Airbus will display ACJ318...Boeing.....er.....nothing from commercial airplane unit.... :(

To be fair, the ACJ318 hardly fits into 'commercial' category. More suited towards the 'big man toys' section I reckon :p

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner is coming to the Singapore Airshow ... and together with Singapore Airlines, it is also represented by the latter's final B747-400 9V-SPQ.

The B787's presence at the airshow is confirmed. Boeing has already announced it and I can assure you that Boeing has a lot planned for the aircraft's visit to Bangkok and Singapore.

The Boeing 747-400's presence at the airshow is a tribute to almost four decades of passenger service with Singapore Airlines. Not exactly a sad occasion ... this is an aircraft type exiting service in glory and honoured. And Boeing too is likely to be involved in this tribute.

Thanks KC Sim for the insight. I read somewhere the B787 is indeed coming but was unconfirmed at that time. Since 787 is the 'IN' aircraft now, I must grab this chance to see it!

Indeed, the B747-400 plays a major role, like other aircraft, in propelling Singapore Airlines' status onto premier airline in the world today. Can't believe the end of SQ's B744 pax service is so close, may SPQ continues to fly as pax or cargo aircraft in many years to come!!

KC Sim, by any chance do you know if SQ or Boeing will be selling some sort of souvenirs to commemorate the retirement of B747-400?

Might not see the 744 on static in the end as due to A380 wing rib inspections, redeployment of aircraft will require the use of the 744 on certain flights. B77W will op SQ334/333 SIN-CDG vv on 04-09FEB12. B744 will also be operated to MEL on the same days.

Further schedule adjustments are expected through the remainder of the mont including the air show period. Hope they can spare a 744 though!

SGA2012: Manufacturers line up orders for Singapore Airshow

By Siva Govindasamy on February 2, 2012 11:32 AM

The Singapore Airshow is not normally one where aircraft manufacturers save up orders. Yet, there has been some interesting chatter about what we can expect in less than a fortnight at the Changi Exhibition Centre.

Bombardier should confirm that Garuda will buy their CRJ regional jets, while ATR and Airbus are expected to announce some orders as well.

Not too sure if Boeing have lined something up, but Lion Air - their big customer - said that they expect to make an announcement around this time of the year. Could they firm their 737 MAX order?

Embraer do not appear to have anything lined up, although I heard that their E-190 might make an appearance and their Asian sales team has had success with Sriwijaya and BOC Aviation last year.

For a show that is traditionally the quietest of the big four, there appears to be a fair bit of activity ahead of it. Can't wait for the Singapore Airshow to begin.

9V-SPQ has already been sold to Transaero Airlines for use as a passenger aircraft ... and will therefore be around for a long time yet.

Incidentally, 9V-SPQ is already taken into the SIA Engineering hangar and scheduled to undergo works that will ensure it turns up at the airshow nice and shiny. Unlikely that it will be rostered for any flights in place of the A380. Note that it may not be at the airshow right from the beginning ... probably coming in only midway through the airshow.

And the B787 Dreamliner is scheduled to depart Singapore sometime on 18 February (Saturday) as per Boeing's posting on its own Dreamliner World Tour website. So those wishing to go up close to it should invest in a trade pass ... it is worth that sum. Just wanted to assure all that the Dreamliner's visit is confirmed and the advance Boeing team leaves Seattle on Monday ... with the plane following soon thereafter.

Check out my first posting on the Singapore Airshow 2012 in my blog at http://livelifelovelife-kc.blogspot.com ... no prize for guessing which aircraft is the star in this post.

Thanks for the update, KC Sim. You're info are indeed very detailed. Am unsettled with the schedule, if I attend the airshow on 18th, I may get to see B787 or may not see it all together. And the B747-400 as well. Any advice?

By the way, very nice blog you have there...:)

Julius Wong : If I were you, I will not wait till 18 February ... because I suspect you will miss the star of the show - the Dreamliner. It departs Singapore for the very long flight back to Seattle ... and I am certain it will not be refuelled, towed out of a very very crowded ramp on a public day for its departure flight. I am certain it will depart very early ahead of the crowd. That is why I suggested that investing in a trade pass for 17 February is probably a worthwhile thought.

Thanks for visiting my blog ... I will continue to update it with airshow news and photos ... but I am planning a post on my experience at the premiere of the B787 on July 7, 2007 (7-8-2007 ... Boeing's take on 7-8-7) more than four years ago.
