SINGAPORE - There will be many biennial favourites and firsts for visitors to check out at the third edition of Asia's largest and one of the three most important aerospace and defence exhibitions in the world, Singapore Airshow 2012.

Held from February 14 to 19 at the Changi Exhibition Centre, the airshow will feature more than 900 exhibitors from 50 countries and 266 delegations from 80 countries.

Representatives from 60 of the top 100 aerospace companies will be present, with some 20 airline and industry association CEOs slated to come, organisers said.

Among the 22 national/group pavilions spread over 50,000sqm of covered exhibition space, there will be for the first time Japan and Ukraine Pavilions.

There will also be an integrated Land Defence and Unmanned Systems Pavilion, the first pavilion of its kind showcasing UAVs, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) platforms and high-tech land-based defence products and technologies.

In addition, the Green Pavilion will make a return, with a focus on alternative fuels to reduce carbon emissions.

For business forums, in addition to past favourites focusing on China and India, there will also be the inaugural Southeast Asia Business Forum, which helps companies understand procurement opportunities and make inroads into key growth markets.

Visitors will also be able to check out over 65 of the latest military aircraft, passenger airliners and luxury business jets on display over 100,000sqm of outdoor exhibition space, such as star-display Boeing 787 Dreamliner making its first appearance in Singapore.

Other firsts on display include the A330 MRTT multi-role tanker and the ACJ318 corporate jet from Airbus Military.

Vistors will also be treated to an aerial display, which includes highlights such as the Republic of Singapore Air Force's (RSAF) F-15SG and F-16C and the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) MiG-29N aerial display team the "Smokey Bandits".

Despite its size, Globemaster proves a nimble bird By Dean Irvine, CNN

February 16, 2012 -- Updated 0803 GMT (1603 HKT)

Editor's note: From high-flyers to mega-deals, CNN International will be bringing you all the latest news and buzz from the Singapore Airshow.

(CNN) -- Among all the aerobatic display teams across the world, the U.S Air Force's C-17A Globemaster "Hickam" isn't the most graceful.

"But it is pretty nimble," says Anthony Gurrieri from its flight deck moments before hitting the thrusters and executing a tactical decent that dropped the plane 20,000 feet (six kilometers) in just over a minute.

Feeling like the most exhilarating roller-coaster ride for those onboard, it is not so spectacular for those watching on the ground at the Singapore Airshow, although it is a maneuver that he and other member of the flight team need to use regularly.

"We're often in areas that you just need to get out of quickly," says Major Mike Pasquino, another of the four pilots of the Hickam. A steep take off and turn was used by the crew recently to escape enemy fire in Afghanistan. "You just think about your training and nothing else in those situations," says Pasquino.

Part of the U.S. Air Force's Pacific crew based in Hawaii, the Hickam's other less hazardous missions have included transporting dolphins and even a killer whale in the plane's voluminous cargo hold. It's been joined in Singapore by display teams from the home nation, Australia and Malaysia, but with all those Type A personalities looping through the skies in national colors, does it lead to competition among pilots?

"No way," says Lieutenant Colonel Mior Nor Badrishah, commanding officer of the Malaysian Air Force's Smokey Bandits display team. "s#1t happens if you push it."

Battle for the skies at Singapore Airshow

And he should know. Badrishah gained the nickname "Ghost" after a near-fatal training accident over the Malacca Straits. He and other pilots from the Malaysian Air Force were on training maneuvers with the Royal Australian Air Force when an Australian jet clipped Badrishah's Russian-made Mig 29, forcing him to bail out at 13,000 feet from the burning jet.

"I blacked out for a few seconds when I ejected. I came too and pulled the parachute and landed in the water. It took over four hours for them to get me out."

Test your aviation knowledge

Just two years ago at the same event in Singapore a South Korean pilot was forced to cut short his aerial display after getting too close to the crowd. The organizers emphasize the safety measures in place at these displays, but accidents do happen, most tragically at an event in Ukraine in 2002 when 77 people died and hundreds of people were injured.

Badrishah's accident "was an expensive mistake," he says with heavy understatement, but it certainly didn't put him off flying. "I had two weeks off and was then back in a plane."

Crowds flock to S'pore Airshow

By Vimita Mohandas | Posted: 18 February 2012 1824 hrs

SINGAPORE: The week-long Singapore Airshow has opened its doors on Saturday to the public and thousands of aviation enthusiasts from the world over, came in droves to the event site at the Changi Exhibition Centre.

As early as 8am, visitors hopped onto shuttle buses at Changi Airport to make their way to the airshow.

Despite the rain and scorching heat on Saturday, the event site was bustling with activity.

The aerial display -- which featured death-defying stunts by fighter pilots and graceful commercial aircrafts -- was a crowd pleaser.

One visitor said: "The biggest draw is being able to see different types of aircraft - the military ones, from RSAF, as well as all the commercial ones, and the 787 that just went by. In Singapore, you don't have that many airshows, so this is an eye-opener."

One boy said: "I just like the planes while they are flying and how the smoke comes out."

"I like it when the planes go round and round and do all the tricks," said another boy.

Snaking queues at the Boeing F-15 SG Eagle is testament that it was certainly a crowd favourite.

This is the first time the Republic of Singapore Air Force is fielding this aircraft which is equipped with technological updates and is one of the most capable and lethal aircraft in the world.

Organisers said they expect some 100,000 people to visit the airshow for the two days it's open to the public.

They added that tickets at SISTIC for Sunday are sold out, but limited tickets are available on site at S$30 for adults and S$15 for children.

Hey guys, the event itself was very organised, but the public acrobatic display and aicraft displayed were much to be desired for. Unless you are fighter jet enthusiast. Managed to get on board SQ B747-400!

Singapore Airshow 2012 Attracts Record Visitors To Biggest Edition Ever

SINGAPORE, Feb 19 (Bernama) -- Singapore Airshow, Asia's largest and one of the three most important aerospace and defence exhibitions in the world, drew a record number of trade and public visitors at this year's edition of the biennial event.

Over the six-day show from Feb 14 till today, Singapore Airshow 2012 welcomed some 145,000 visitors from 128 countries.

The event also played host to the largest ever number of top level delegations, with 266 from over 80 countries.

Jimmy Lau, Managing Director of Experia Events, organiser of event, said: "Singapore Airshow 2012 has been a success for everyone. We have set a new record for the value of deals announced, as well as the number of visitors on both trade and public days.

"As a testament to the show's achievements, over 70 percent of exhibitors had already reaffirmed their commitment to take up exhibition space in 2014. We are looking forward to the next show and hope to deliver a more enhanced experience in 2014.

Tickets for the public day weekend over Saturday and today, were completely sold out, and Changi Exhibition Centre, the Airshow site, saw some 100,000 visitors over the two days, swamping the grounds where they were treated to breathtaking aerial displays and had the opportunity to view an impressive array of aircraft in static display.

The aerial display included show-stopping performances from Singapore Air Force (RSAF), the Royal Malaysian Air Force "Smokey Bandits", the United States Air Force and the Royal Australian Air Force "Roulettes".

Australian pilot Tony Blair of Blair Aerosports also made his debut in the first stunt aerobatic performance in the history of airshows in Singapore.

In addition, visitors had a chance to interact with the aerial display pilots in person during autograph and photo-taking sessions.

Singapore Airlines also hosted guided tours on one of their last three remaining Boeing 747-400s, which was here at Singapore Airshow to commemorate the retirement of its B747 fleet.

Singapore Airshow Wraps Up Trade With Record Deals Of Over US$31 Billion

SINGAPORE, Feb 17 (Bernama) -- Singapore Airshow 2012, Asia s largest and one of the three most important aerospace and defence exhibitions in the world, wrapped up the trade segment of the six-day event with a record value of deals announced worth over US$31 billion.

This represented a threefold increase over the value announced in 2010 with major transactions including contracts for Boeing, Airbus, Pratt & Whitney, CFM and ATR.

Over the last four days, the airshow played host to some 900 exhibitors from 50 countries and 266 delegations from 80 countries who flew into Singapore to network, establish partnerships and forge new deals.

In all, some 38,000 trade visitors from 119 countries visited the show during the first three trade days, compared to some 35,000 in 2010.

Of these, over 30 per cent were from overseas.

Some 70 per cent of exhibitors at this year's event have already confirmed plans to exhibit at the next airshow in 2014, the organisers of the event said.

Expressing delight that this year's trade deals worth surpassed the US$10 billion worth of deals announced in 2010, Jimmy Lau, Managing Director of Experia Events, the organiser of the event, said this further reaffirmed Singapore Airshow s position as the platform of choice for aviation industry representatives from around the world to reach their key markets, especially the emerging markets in Asia.

Katy Padgett, Manager, Communications, Pratt & Whitney, said her company was pleased their experience at the Singapore Airshow.

"It continues to be a great platform for us to reach out to the aviation community in the Asia Pacific region.

Senior Government spokesman for UKTI's Defence and Security Sector, Adam Thomas said the event was an important opportunity for UK companies in the aerospace and defence sectors to promote their capabilities and identify potential joint venture opportunities.

Lau said the organisers were looking forward to delivering an even better experience for exhibitors and visitors at the next event to be held at the Changi Exhibition Centre in February 2014.

I wished they had more light piston engine aircraft on display... The last airshow in 2010 Piper had a few of their machine on display but none this year.
