Malaysia Airlines Announced To Sponsor QPR

Recommended Posts

I have 2 wish for QPR!

1. Can QPR make the "major"-home sponsor logo and font look as nice as Arsenal & Manchester City major sponsor?

2. Please keep fight and stay at BPL for 2 seasons at least. Hehe.

Still nobody dare to challnage the giant "Fly-Emirates" corporate name. It appear in Europe & Asia football and now IRB Rubgy World Cup. hehe

Business is booming for QPR thanks to Malaysian ‘air raid’

IT was Saturday, Oct 15, 2011, The English Premier League match had ended 1-1 and the fans were very much excited. Some were on the phone, calling their friends to give them their take of the match.

Others chatted animatedly and a long queue snaked outside the store selling the team merchandise. Even inside, the Superstore was packed with fans. Paying for your purchase took close to half an hour.

No, this was not Anfield after the draw with Manchester United.

It was Loftus Road after QPR had drawn with Blackburn Rovers. It wasn’t the best of matches but you could have been fooled by the exuberance of the fans.

The shirts were flying off the shelves and like one buyer said “we’re spending a fortune here.”

The shirt sponsors seem to have known that. The sponsors incidentally are Malaysia Airlines (MAS, for the home games) and Air Asia (for the away games).

For MAS, that’s exactly what they had in mind when they went into the deal.

“The exposure is really huge,” says MAS UK and Ireland area manager Yuzrizal Mohd Yousuf.

“The rules of the English Premier League (EPL) are such that the second kit is worn only about eight times in a season.

“So, with 38 matches played a season, MAS will get exposure in about 30 matches.”

What he did not mention was that the biggest exposure would come against teams like champions Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal, all of whom wear red at home.

Against these big teams, the QPR side will wear the MAS-sponsored shirts both at home and away.

At home because it’s their home jersey and away because the second and third kits, which are orange and red, would clash with the big three’s home jerseys.

There have been rumblings back home in Malaysia about the worth of the deal with a team like QPR, which is not exactly a worldwide brand.

Yuzrizal makes it clear that while QPR may not have a huge following in Malaysia – not many had even heard of them until the Tan Sri Tony Fernandes takeover – they were big in England, especially London.

“They have a huge fan base in England. They are an old club, having been founded in 1882.

“They also have big names currently like Joey Barton and Shaun-Wright Phillips. We can leverage on that,” he said.

While traffic out of KL is not a big problem for MAS, Yuzrizal has a big task on his hands in London.

The new A380 will be in service soon and that would mean finding 500 passengers out of London on each flight.

With two flights a day, MAS needs 1,000 people to fly out of London each day – a 30% increase in load from now.

“While it should be easily achieved during the Olympics next year, it’s the off-season that we have to worry about.

“Let’s be honest. Times are bad, especially in Europe. People have to cut costs and the first thing they cut down on is air travel. They holiday closer to home.

“We need to get them interested.

The QPR tie-up has helped.

“Almost immediately after the signing, two corporate clients decided to make MAS their favoured airline. One of the bosses is a QPR fan,” smiled Yuzrizal.

“With the expected drop in regular travellers, the corporate or high-yield passengers are increasingly important,” he added.

MAS has sponsored other sports like cricket and LeTua team in the Tour of Langkawi.

“We also have a Malaysian Airlines Open golf tournament involving industry players and Malaysian golfers in London,” he said.

MAS has also been official charter for Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal besides being EPL broadcast sponsors with EPL Starsports for the EPL from 2005 to 2007.

The World Travel Mart (WTM) next month offers plenty of opportunities to use the QPR branding.

There is also a contest which will involve the launching of the A380, the Tourism Ministry and the fans. Winners will get tickets to London and a QPR match.

MAS also has access to the rather large QPR e-mail database.

“We can send e-mail blasts. And we can get the message through,” says Yuzrizal.

That’s all very well. But how do you convince the people in Malaysia?

Well, a QPR booth in KLIA (for MAS) and the LCCT (for AirAsia) may help.

Both airlines would do well to go on a merchandising campaign to get more fans for the hitherto lesser-known club.

With it will come better shirt – and memento – sales.

Of course, a lot will depend on how the team do on the pitch. But if you can have diehard fans, they can reach for the skies.

QPR lawyers better look into that closely ! :)

QPR and MAS are two distinct entities and there are rather strict privacy laws over there :p

Presumably - repeat, presumably, those are email addresses of folks who have not opted out from agreeing with QPR sharing their details with partners.

One way is to sign up to QPR fan club email or something to find out what MH is doing..

Perhaps it is not MAS who sends them the email - it is QPR sending out "sponsored email" with banners of special offers to the list members.

Anyway, I think QPR fans take a rather different view to the sponsorship deal. They have embraced the changes at the club positively. They like the changes that they see.

What does that tell you ?

Perhaps that EK think and plan big time long term :)

As opposed to MH who need to follow dictates of a competitor with vested interest ? :pardon:

In run up to this weekend's Carling cup final, perhaps Malaysian owner of Cardiff City may feel he is getting better value for money compared to the more high profile owner/sponsor of a certain premiership club, whose entity is currently just about hovering above the relegation zone by skin of it's teeth (ie by goal difference in footballing terms) :D

The sponsorship is off, as off as the share swap.

According to rumour mill; the Cardiff fbc owner changed the name from ‘Blue Bird’ because ‘Blue Bird’ doesn’t sound elegance in Hokkien and he believes colour red will bring better luck.

I'm a bit surprised T/S TF has not been able to yet craft out some collaborative arrangement between Air Asia group and Etihad

It has been near a couple of months since those tense bonding moments during extra time period at end of EPL 2011-12 season (Man City vs QPR if anyone need reminding) :)

Colour of more successful clubs (e.g. Liverpool, Man Utd) were mentioned and the big man decided on 'Chinese red', and Blue Bird ('lam5 chiau2' in Hokkien) will be discontinued.
