AirAsia-ANA tie-up - AirAsia Japan

Recommended Posts

I dunno what went wrong or whose fault it was - but to cancel flights on the run up to the termination of venture is not nice.

If you do this, you might as well close now. It's like tendering your resignation with 30 days notice, and then taking a whole bunch of MC's and when you ARE at work, not putting a whole lot of effort into it.

They are STILL a Joint venture for now, and should behave as such.

It makes perfect business sense. Ruin the Airasia brand now! What they are doing to the Japanese public perception, the confidence in the brand would be a kin to character assassination. It tells the Japanese, do not trust this Malaysian brand, for its no good, it cancels your flights, it pulls out of the market after some months.

Should Airasia try to restart, the damage would be done. They would have a hard time. TF and Airasia is also at fault, stating publically that they would possibly try again in Japan. You don't state your business direction and country strategy publicly to what is now potentially your future competitor.

Smart move ANA!

ANA to re-launch AirAsia Japan with new brand, oversight – can ANA get it right this time around?

Following the dissolution of the AirAsia Japan joint venture with the AirAsia Group that allowed the use of theAirAsia brand, All Nippon Airways will re-launch the Tokyo Narita-based operation in late Dec-2013 under a new brand to be announced in Aug-2013. This is not merely about re-painting aircraft and updating signage.ANA is effectively starting from scratch. It will keep the AOC, employees and relationships, but must source new aircraft since the existing ones are supplied by AirAsia, as is AirAsia Japan's booking system. And there are countless other projects big and small that must be undertaken.

I guess it would be wise for like Lion group partnering with NADI to form Malindo Air where they could strategise and run the business in whatever form they wants as long as it makes money.

Unlike AIrAsia and ANA... like TF said the full frilled thinking airlines business apparently has different way of thinking to run a low cost airlines. So I personally won't think it really fits for AirAsia Group to buy MAS over.

Actually, TF's mistake was to let ANA have management control - he gave ANA too much respect. Peach, on the other hand, is managed more independently of ANA.

That is why AirAsia India is now structured differently - AirAsia has effective control and TATA has agreed to just be an investor.

Seems like there is a preference towards naming according to vegetation.

I think it is a stupid name. Peach, Vanilla... what is this?

In the opinion of some (if not most) Japanese public, that sounds cute perhaps?

Seems like there is a preference towards naming according to vegetation.

Chrysanthemum Throne is another term to describe Japan Imperial family. :-)

AirAsia X CEO makes ice-cream themed dig at Vanilla Air

TOKYO (Aug 23, 2013): The chief executive of AirAsia X, whose parent company's joint venture with Japan's ANA ended in a spat over business practices, made an ice-cream-themed dig at their former partners Friday.

Asked what he thought the impact would be of Vanilla Air, the re-branded budget carrier due to be launched by All Nippon Airways later this year, Azran Osman-Rani said: "First of all, strawberry flavour is always better than vanilla."

Executives of AirAsia Japan this week announced the name -- despite its connotations of "boring" or "bland" in the West -- following the dispute between the airline's parent companies, Malaysia-based AirAsia, known for its bright red livery, and ANA, which now wholly owns the carrier.

The airlines announced in June that the joint venture would be terminated by the end of October, just over a year after the carrier began flying out of Tokyo's Narita airport.

AirAsia said at the time there had been "fundamental difference of opinion between its shareholders on how the business should be managed from cost management to where the domestic business operations should be based".

Azran said Friday that AirAsia X, which operates middle- and long-haul flights for the AirAsia group, will continue expanding its business in Japan and other Asia-Pacific countries.

"For AirAsia X it doesn't change the fact we see a huge potential in continuing to invest" in the market, he said, as he announced more flights linking Kuala Lumpur and Japan's western Kansai International Airport.

"I am very sure that AirAsia as a group remains very committed to Japan."

Vanilla Air, which will begin flights in late December with two passenger planes to be leased from ANA, is to target travellers heading for resort destinations. – AFP

Will the 5 A320's end up on the 9M register or dispersed around the group?

My bet is they end up in the Phillipines/Zest Air venture or AK will retain the sharklet ones and trade some older AK ones to PQ/Z2 like ex AQT.

Something interesting:

I was thinking it might be that the AirAsia Japan CEO [before the bitter divorce] was at loggerhead with the ANA Group or ANA CEO, that's why he chose to leave the mother company.

This CEO is the second CEO - at the time of the announcement of the dissolution of the ANA partnership, TF did mention that many AirAsia Japan staff urged him to start another airline to continue the Airasia Japan "dream"... So maybe this CEO was one of them.

AirAsia Prepares Japan Discount Airline After Split With ANA

AirAsia Bhd. (AIRA), Southeast Asia’s biggest budget carrier, is close to restarting plans for a Japanese unit after a partnership with ANA Holdings Inc. (9202) unraveled in June, Chief Executive Officer Tony Fernandes said.

“Japan is a market we are very bullish on,” Fernandes said in an interview in London on Jan 17. The Sepang, Malaysia-based airline has lined up local partners and plans to commence service next year, the executive said.
The carrier, with units in Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines, expects to begin service with a new Indian venture in March as it aims to expand its regional reach. ANA, which took over AirAsia Japan Co. after almost a year of operating because of a disagreement over strategy, has rebranded the unit Vanilla Air, leaving Fernandes to reformulate plans.
“We have had one year of free advice really,” Fernandes said. “It’s a fantastic market.”
The Japan enterprise will avoid Tokyo’s Narita airport to achieve lower costs, he said. The venture with ANA, Japan’s biggest airline, operated from Narita, where Fernandes said the carrier should never have been.
Operations from Japan will not begin until next year in part to allow AirAsia to focus on establishing its India unit in 2014, Fernandes said.

I am not really optimstic AIrAsia Group plunging into Japan. The market seems like overwhelmed by too many airlines, both FSC and LCC.

LCC: Peach Air, Vanilla Air, Jetstar Japan, Skymark Airlines, Spring Airlines Japan

FSC:

Japan Airlines Group:

Japan Airlines, Fuji Dream Airlines, Hokkaido Air System, J-Air, JAL Express, Japan Air Commuter, Japan Transocean Air, Ryukyu Air Commuter

All Nippon Airlines Group:

All Nippon Airlines, Air Do, Air Japan, ANA Wings, Ibex Airlines, Oriental Air Bridge, Solaseed Air, StarFlyer

Others:

Amakusa Airlines, New Central Airlines and New Japan Aviation

Me too - Japanese are very used to travelling on bullet trains and that is also competition for airlines. Its not the same in Malaysia, Thailand or Indonesia - our ramshackle railways are no competition for airlines.

Perhaps building a hub in Nagoya might be a better idea - with Airasia X and Thai Airasia X feeding pax from SEA and Australia.

AirAsia Picks Partners for Second Crack at Japanese Airline

AirAsia Bhd. (AIRA), the region’s biggest budget carrier, has decided on partners and top executives for a new discount airline in Japan after ending its tie-up with ANA Holdings Inc. (9202) last year.

The co-investors include listed companies, Tony Fernandes, the Malaysian low-cost airline’s group chief executive officer, said in a telephone interview in Tokyo today, without naming them. Yoshinori Odagiri, formerly chief executive of AirAsia’s Japanese tie-up with ANA, will head the new carrier with Osamu Hata, previously a chief financial officer at Japan’s Dell unit, taking the top finance role, he said.
“We’ve gone with people we think are like-minded and bring strategic value,” said Fernandes, during a visit to Japan to meet them. “The timing is excellent for Japan with the new economic thinking.”

This would be an appropriate time to continue discussion on AirAsia Japan on a fresh thread:
