MAS Joins oneworld!

Recommended Posts

I really hope the official join date is 12/12/12. It means that everything on QF from then on will go to my Enrich account! However, I'm still thinking the join date will be sometime in late January.

Actually the post doesn't need to be removed, just edited so that it doesn't contain a complete copy of the original article (as that's a breach of copyright)... maybe leave the first paragraph there and follow that with a link to the original article? This way the good news about MAS joining Oneworld in December can still be shared with MW members, without denying AusBT the traffic from the story.

From the company newsletter

Recently on 26 September 2012, representatives from Qantas (QF) and oneworld management company (oMC) completed an intensive ‘Go/ No-Go’ review of MH’s readiness to officially join the oneworld alliance later in the year (MH is currently still a oneworld member-elect).

Following the review, I am pleased to inform that MH has passed the oneworld Go/No Go assessment. In short, MH joining oneworld is a Go!

At the end of the examination, QF and oMC concluded that December 2012 is an achievable target for MH’s entry. oneworld CEOs’ availability is now being sought to confirm an entry date sometime in the week commencing 10 December 2012.

So 12/12/12 is a doable date!

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 29 (Bernama)-- Malaysia Airlines (MAS) will become a full member of oneworld effective from Feb 1, 2013, adding one of commercial aviation's most frequent award winners to the world's leading quality airline alliance.

A joint statement Monday said the national airline received clearance to board oneworld after successfully completing a thorough review of its readiness conducted by Qantas, which is also sponsoring its entry into the alliance, with the oneworld central team.

While MAS' alliance implementation programme is on track for completion in the coming weeks, its addition to oneworld is being held until the beginning of 2013 to avoid the end-of-year holiday season and for other administrative reasons, the statement said.

MAS will start offering oneworld's full range of services and benefits from Feb 1, 2013 -- becoming the alliance's second airline operating the Airbus A380, after Qantas.

The statement said the two million members of MAS' Enrich loyalty programme will, in effect, have their frequent flyer privileges extended to whenever they fly with any oneworld member airline.

Also from Feb 1, the 125 million members of the established oneworld airlines' frequent flyer programmes will be able to earn and redeem awards and tier status points and receive all other oneworld benefits on MAS, it added.

oneworld Chief Executive Officer Bruce Ashby said: "MAS is an ideal candidate for oneworld, with its world-class reputation for customer service mirroring oneworld's own focus.

"This will greatly enhance oneworld's offering throughout one of the world's fastest growing regions for air travel demand," he added.

MAS Group Chief Executive Ahmad Jauhari Yahya added: "oneworld membership represents one of the most significant achievements to date for MAS.

"It will strengthen our competitive position considerably, enabling our customers to enjoy a truly global network together with our partners while enabling us also to tap into all the financial benefits that come from being part of a global alliance, through additional passenger feed and cost reduction opportunities."

From oneworld's website on the confirmation. http://www.oneworld....?objectID=52929

From then, the 2 million members of Malaysia Airlines' Enrich loyalty programme will, in effect, have their frequent flyer privileges extended to whenever they fly with any oneworld member airline - airberlin, American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific Airways, Finnair, Iberia, Japan Airlines, LAN Airlines, Qantas, Royal Jordanian, S7 Airlines and some 25 affiliated airlines. This includes earning and redeeming mileage awards and earning tier status points when flying with all these airlines. (See notes)

Enrich Platinum cardholders will have Emerald status in the oneworld programme. Enrich Gold will be equivalent to oneworld Sapphire and Enrich Silver will be oneworld Ruby.

From 1 February, Enrich Platinum and Gold members will be able to use any of the 550 airport lounges worldwide offered by oneworld member airlines whenever they fly with any of the alliance's carriers. Malaysia Airlines' First and Business Class passengers will also be able to use oneworld partner airline lounges. (See notes)

Also from 1 February, the 125 million members of the established oneworld airlines' frequent flyer programmes will be able to earn and redeem awards and tier status points and receive all other oneworld benefits on Malaysia Airlines. (See notes)

Malaysia Airlines is already participating in Global Explorer, the round-the-world fare offered by all oneworld members and various airlines that are not part of the alliance. From 1 February, Malaysia Airlines' network - serving more than 60 destinations in nearly 30 countries - will be covered by oneworld's full and extensive range of alliance fares and sales products.

Malaysia Airlines will substantially expand the alliance's network in South East Asia, where it will add 14 destinations and one country - Brunei - to the oneworld map. More significantly, it will strengthen the alliance's connectivity between many key business cities in Asia and other parts of the world.

Its addition will expand oneworld's global coverage to some 840 destinations in 156 countries, served by some 9,000 departures a day operated by a combined fleet of some 2,500 aircraft, carrying nearly 340 million passengers a year, with annual revenues of US$ 110 billion. Add oneworld's other members elect - Qatar Airways and Sri Lankan Airlines - and the alliance network reaches to 856 destinations in 159 countries.

Currently three of oneworld's active member airlines serve three points in Malaysia, with Cathay Pacific, Japan Airlines and Royal Jordanian flying to Kuala Lumpur, Cathay Pacific operating to Penang and its Dragonair regional affiliate to Kota Kinabalu.

Malaysia Airlines' oneworld implementation programme has represented one of the most extensive projects in the airline's history, with working groups covering some 20 streams of activity. Projects are nearing completion to bring its various internal processes and procedures into line with the alliance's requirements, and extensive employee training and communications programmes are now underway at Malaysia Airlines and the alliance's existing members, to ensure they are ready to provide oneworld's customer services and benefits across the expanded alliance from 1 February.

Notes

Because of an upgrade to LAN's frequent flyer information technology system being implemented shortly after Malaysia Airlines joins oneworld, frequent flyer services and benefits between Malaysia Airlines and LAN will be available from 1 April 2013. So members of Malaysia Airlines' Enrich programme will be able to earn or redeem frequent flyer reward points and receive other oneworld frequent flyer services and benefits when flying on LAN Airlines, and members of LAN's LANPASS programme will be able to earn or redeem frequent flyer reward points, and receive other oneworld benefits when flying on Malaysia Airlines from 1 April 2013.

Interesting to note that MH brought only Brunei onto the Oneworld map.

I wonder what the 14 new destinations are, apart from obviously BWN....are these the likes of only KUA, SDK, MYY, BTU, SBW, KCH, TGG, KBR, AOR, JHB, LGK, TWU, LBU?

Also, upon election into oneworld and barring any financial difficulties, we could see MH reopening back some of its closed stations, hence adding more numbers to the destinations it brings to oneworld.

List of MH's former destinations:

Indian Subcontinent:

Ahmedabad

Karachi

Kolkata

Arab World:

Bahrain

Beirut

Cairo

Dubai

Dammam

Kuwait

Indonesia:

Balikpapan

Bandung

Makassar

Manado

Padang

Pekanbaru

Pontianak

Surabaya

Tarakan

Yogyakarta

South America:

Buenos Aires

Orient (except China):

Busan

Fukuoka

Kaohsiung

Macau

Nagoya

Tokyo Haneda

Europe:

Brussels

Madrid

Manchester

Moscow

Munich

Rome

Stockholm

Vienna

Zurich

Zagreb

Australia:

Cairns

Darwin

Africa:

Cape Town

Johannesburg

South East Asia (except Indonesia):

Cebu

Chiangmai

Davao

Hatyai

Ipoh

Vientiane

Zamboanga

China:

Chengdu

Guilin

Wuhan

Xian

North America:

Honolulu

Mexico City

New York

Vancouver

MH has identified the Asia Pacific region as where the growth will be in the future so I am sure a lot of former destinations in Indonesia, South East Asia and China will be reactivated back.

Being the 12th member, it is understandably hard for MH to bring in more number of new destinations as pretty much all of the major ones have been covered by the other 11 members.

Sorry but when did MH operate scheduled flights to Guilin, Wuhan and Bahrain? Seasonal charters?

(If you add charters to the list, then the list can go on and on and on.) And I think (though I may be wrong) Kuwait was a destination a very long time ago, just like Butterworth and Melaka.

I wonder if we'll see some more OneWorld arrangements between now and Feb 1 in the next WoR?

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 30 (Bernama) -- The entry into the oneworld alliance will help national carrier, Malaysia Airlines (MAS), regain some competitive edge to raise revenue yield going forward, together with its ongoing fleet renewal programme.

Alliance Research said the competitive edge is through improved products offering, better service standards, access to premium customers, and an expansion of route networks and flight frequency.

"We believe joining the oneworld alliance is an opportunity for MAS to expand its global route network in a cost efficient manner," Alliance Research said in a research note, today.

It also said MAS had one of the lowest yields among full service carriers (FSCs) in the region and this negatively affected its financial performance.

Thus, it added, raising revenue yield is the only way to turnaround the airline.

"While we expect MAS' yield to improve from 21.7 sen in financial year 2012 to 25.8 sen in fiscal year 2014, its financial performance will continue to underwhelm in the near term, with the prospect of turning in a full-year profit only materialising in 2014.

"A key risk to its turnaround is the intensifying competition not only from other FSCs but from low cost carriers (LCCs) such as AirAsia amid rising industry capacity and dismal macroeconomic outlook," it said.

On Monday, MAS announced that it will be joining oneworld with effect from Feb 1 next year, and start offering its passengers the full range of services and benefits under the alliance.

MAS will add 14 destinations to expand oneworld's global coverage to some 840 destinations in 156 countries.

On the other hand, the two million members of the carrier's Enrich loyalty programme will have their frequent flyer privileges extended (including earning and redeeming mileage awards and earning tier status points), whenever they fly with any oneworld member airline and 25 affiliated airlines.
