Recommended Posts

I just looked at booking flights to Helsinki from LHR next month and www.kayak.com provided some interesting MH flights operated by Finnair.

MH9xxx - sorry didnt pay too much attention to the actual flight numbers as the fares were exorbitant for these MH-flight numbers but it was however goos to see MH and AY will be codesharing soon.

From the booking page it's MH9266/9263, and for some reasons they only show J class as MH codeshare flight...

BTW I'd like to see MH codesharing with other future OW members to other destinations.

20 November 2012, Subang: Finnair and Malaysia Airlines have established new code shares effective today, increasing access to the airlines’ respective hubs in Helsinki and Kuala Lumpur.

Through this new arrangement valid for air travel from 1 December 2012, selected Malaysia Airlines services between Kuala Lumpur and the cities of Singapore, Bangkok and Hong Kong will carry the Finnair flight code. Likewise, Malaysia Airlines’ flight code will be used on selected Finnair services between Helsinki and the European cities of London, Paris, Frankfurt and Amsterdam.

To promote this code-share, Malaysia Airlines is now offering attractive all inclusive return fares starting from RM4396.00 for economy class travel and RM13363.00 for Business class trips.

“Finnair is very pleased to offer our customers flying to Southeast Asia extended reach to Kuala Lumpur, the cultural and economic heart of Malaysia and a fast-growing and prosperous metropolis,” says Hannu Sundberg, Finnair Vice President, Commercial Partnerships. “By the same token we are also pleased to welcome Malaysia Airlines’ customers to Helsinki and establish closer cooperation between our two airlines. Malaysia Airlines is a natural counterpart for us and we look forward to welcoming the company to the oneworld alliance.”

Malaysia Airlines’ Senior Vice President of Government & International Affairs Mr Germal Singh said, “The arrangement with Finnair is part of our strategy to develop commercial cooperation withoneworld alliance members as we prepare towards becoming a full member of the alliance next year. This is also our initiative towards enhancing air connectivity with key priority markets overseas for increased tourist arrivals into Malaysia as required by our government’s Economic Transformation Programme”

“Through this partnership we can expand our reach in Europe without operating our own flights between Malaysia and the Scandinavian region. As one of the most affordable tourist destinations in the Asia Pacific region, we are confident that more tourists from the Scandinavian region will use this code share and visit Malaysia,” he added.

On February 1, 2013, Malaysia Airlines will also join the oneworld alliance, of which Finnair is a member.

Make no sense to me, FY has non-stop direct flight to BKK, SIN & HKG, why would people stopover in KUL to ride on MH's bird?

Malaysia Airlines Set To Join Oneworld Alliance Feb 1, 2013

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 6 (Bernama) -- Award winning Malaysia Airlines is set to become the 12th member of the award winning Oneworld Alliance from Feb 1, 2013.

In a statement today, Malaysia Airlines said it won the 'World's Best Cabin Crew' award this year, making it the seventh time in 11 years and also the 'Best Airline Signature Dish' from Skytrax, the United Kingdom based world's leading airline and airport review organisation.

It said Skytrax awarded Malaysia Airlines the "5-Star Airline" status this year, an award that was made possible through its consistent 40 years of exclusive Malaysian hospitality delivery to its customers.

Meanwhile, speaking on this development after attending the Oneworld Governing Board Meeting in London today, MAS Group Chief Executive Officer, Ahmad Jauhari Yahya, said the airline was on the last lap of the path towards becoming a full-fledged member of a fast growing award-winning alliance.

He said almost all system interface and fares standardisation requirements for the membership had been completed.

Ahmad Jauhari also said it was an exciting time for both MAS and Oneworld, which already has attracted Sri Lankan Airlines and Qatar Airways both of which will be joining the leading global airlines alliance after MAS.

"With our business plan showing positive results since its launch last December, this is an opportune time for our induction into this global alliance," he said, adding that the membership will strengthen the airline's competitive position considerably.

It would enable MAS customers to enjoy a truly global network together with its partners who include some of the best and biggest airlines in the world.

MAS would be able to also tap into all the financial benefits that come from being part of a global alliance, through additional passenger feed and cost reduction opportunities.

"We are indeed very pleased and proud to join what is clearly the world's top quality airline grouping on Feb 1.

"Malaysia Airlines will start offering Oneworld's full range of services and benefits from Feb 1, 2013 and will be the second carrier in the alliance operating the A380 after Qantas, its Oneworld entry sponsor," the statement said.

The Malaysian airline membership will also expand Oneworld's global coverage to some 840 destinations in 156 countries, served by some 9,000 departures a day operated by a combined fleet of some 2,500 aircraft, carrying nearly 340 million passengers a year, with annual revenues of US$110 billion.

So the 1st Feb 2013 entry date into OW still stands ?...... Does this means I can only accure CX Marco Polo miles on MH flights fr 1st Feb onwards ?

That is correct.

hi guys, after MH joins oneworld, how many new destinations will be added (including those codeshare flights)? :drinks:

According to 'going places' one year plus ago, MH codeshare destinations covered almost the entire globe. May be a reduction in numbers and limited to OW destinations.

MH needs to develop a niche network for it to fully reap the benefits of being an allianced carrier. Its current network is just not comprehensive enough for it to realise the full potential of an OW member. MAS should strategise and market itself as a gateway carrier for SEA within OW. Beef up its SEA network to serve secondary points in Indonesia (Surabaya, Bandung and Yogjakarta) Thailand (Chiang Mai), Philippines (Cebu), Vietnam (Da Nang) increase frequencies to DPS, RGN, REP, HAN.

Maybe that is what they are planning with purchase of 36 new ATR 72-600, to strengthen their SEA network..

AF/KL is agressively courting them, while Eitihad is increasing their presence in Air Berlin, recently buying a key stake in their FF program.

Nothing concrete yet - I mean Qantas & Emirates are joining forces at the expense of the QF/BA JV but there are no talks of them leaving oneworld so why should Air Berlin be any different.

I don't know about that but with turboprop, I doubt it would be utilised beyond 150 mins flt time or 700nm range from its base. If my assumption is true, SEA network would not be covered much by this equipment.

Malaysia Airlines (MAS) is starting to show some signs of progress in its latest turnaround effort, after a year of restructuring and almost constant adjustments to its new business plan. The carrier’s management team is confident the flag carrier will finally turn the corner in 2013 and that its upcoming entrance into oneworldparticularly boosts its outlook. But MAS still faces several challenges and there is always a risk of Malaysian politics quickly erasing the positive aspects of the recent restructuring.

MAS should not be banking on oneworld, which it will formally enter on 01-Feb-2013, being its panacea. Only three oneworld carriers serve Kuala Lumpur and relations with MAS’ sponsor, Australia’s Qantas, cooled significantly earlier this year after talks over establishing a new joint venture carrier ended.

Project Orca, which envisioned Qantas and MAS joining forces to establish a new Malaysia-based A330 carriers on routes within Asia-Pacific including Australia, was a logical solution for both carriers’ international woes. But MAS strongly disapproved of the commercial terms proposed by Qantas and now that Qantas has got into bed with Emirates it faces the prospect of the carrier which brought it into oneword emerging as a bigger competitor rather than key partner.

With the benefits from oneworld not likely to come in the short-term, MAS needs to focus on further reducing costs and fully implementing the latest version of its business plan. The carrier’s restructuring is still a work in progress and by no means is MAS out of the woods.

There have been several major adjustments to the MAS business plan over the last several months, including a reversal of capacity cuts and dropping plans to establish a new short-haul premium carrier. But the core component, a focus on premium services, remains the same. MAS is still investing significantly in fleet renewal as well as a product enhancements to reinforce its premium position.

The original version of the new business plan, which was unveiled just over one year ago in Dec-2011, also outlined network changes which in hindsight were too drastic and sudden. The new MAS management team took a slash and burn approach, implementing a route rationalisation exercise that quickly cut ASKs by 12%.

Sounds so depressingly familiar already :(

Sooner someone realize there is only so much that can be slashed and once burnt, ....... wonder where anyone got impression of anything rational about that :)

With Malaysia Airlines joining the oneworld, I believe all of us hope that it's beginning of a new chapter. The fleet roll-over to new aircraft has accelerated with fewer old A330 and B734 remaining. Another two more A380 are coming soon. B744 are on the way out......Now if we could just get the 'Malaysia Airlines' branding and logo sorted out.......and refurbish those B777s. :)

Now they need to resume their discontinued SUB, JOG and PLM services and increase frequencies to AKL, BNE and ADL. Perhaps they could also look into starting services to more secondary points in China like Chengdu, Shenzhen, etc.

Glad to see MH is increasing frequencies to HKG, MNL and RGN.
