Ooo…Scoot to OOL- Non-stop!

7 February 2012, Singapore – Queensland's tourism capital, the Gold Coast, and its iconic beaches provided the backdrop for Scoot's announcement of its second Australian destination.

Tourism Queensland, Gold Coast Tourism, Gold Coast Airport and Scoot today jointly announced a partnership agreement that will see Scoot as the first airline to fly direct between Singapore and the Gold Coast, and back of course.

From mid-2012, Scoot will operate five non-stop flights a week, making the "famous for fun" Gold Coast experience literally a "scoot" away!

"This has been a fantastic partnership between Scoot, Tourism Queensland and the Gold Coast tourism industry and we can't wait to welcome our first visitors," Tourism Queensland CEO Anthony Hayes said.

"The Gold Coast has always been famous for fun, so it is the perfect holiday destination for

Scoot's customers."

AirAsia’s Tony Fernandes Pokes Fun at Singapore Airlines

By Shibani Mahtani

Singapore Airlines is positioning its soon-to-be-operational long haul, low-cost carrier Scoot as something special, with bright yellow uniforms, a “different attitude” and a name many are still trying to wrap their head around.

But AirAsia’s Tony Fernandes maintains that the new airline, which is already creating some buzz amongst the region’s travelers, will not offer any serious competition and that his company’s AirAsia X – the long-haul affiliate of the Malaysian budget carrier – will still keep its market share.

“[AirAsia X has] a tremendous advantage over Scoot… because of first-mover advantage,” said Mr. Fernandes in an interview with the Wall Street Journal.

AirAsia X commenced operations in November 2007, with its first service from Kuala Lumpur International Airport to Gold Coast Airport in Australia. Scoot, which will commence operations in the middle of this year, will first fly to Sydney.

Mr. Fernandes says that the brand he built up – AirAsia – has much to do with AirAsia X’s strategy, allowing the longer-haul version to share a name with an established low-cost airline and tap into a “huge network” of budget-airlines infrastructure, unlike Singapore Airlines’ Scoot.

Not only that, but Scoot “has a really dumb name for a start,” he said.

Earlier this year, AirAsia X pulled out from serving Delhi, Mumbai, London and Paris, citing high fuel prices, high taxes and a steep increase in costs at the Indian airports. It soon followed with news of a new route, connecting Sydney to Kuala Lumpur from April 2 – several months before Scoot makes their maiden flight to the same Australian city.

Mr. Fernandes has long offered colorful comments about his rivals. When plans for a low-cost, medium-to-long haul carrier – which became Scoot – were announced by Singapore Airlines, the AirAsia boss tweeted: “Singapore Airlines to set up a long haul low cost carrier. Hahahaha. Déjà vu.” He insisted they had “copied” the idea from his team.

Efforts to reach Singapore Airlines for comment Monday evening were unsuccessful.

Insisting that his airline would provide something fresh, Scoot’s chief executive, Campbell Wilson said in a press release late last year that Scoot offers something to the “tried and tired,” with a name that “stands out…and can be a verb or noun.”

Mr. Fernandes also said Monday the Thai and Indonesian units of AirAsia will launch initial public offerings by the second quarter of this year. When asked what AirAsia would do with all the money raised, Mr. Fernandes joked that he would “buy Singapore Airlines.”

“They’re (Singapore Airlines) confused puppies… they should be available for sale anytime soon,” said Mr. Fernandes.

Earlier this year, the Singaporean airline reported that its net profit in its fiscal third quarter fell 53%, a fifth straight quarter of lower earnings owing to higher fuel prices and ongoing economic woes.

AirAsia’s third quarter earnings, released late last year, also fell more than 50% compared to the previous year, though Mr. Fernandes said then that the company would have a “good fourth quarter.” Earnings are expected to be announced next week.

Though quick to hurl criticism at his rivals, Mr. Fernandes had a slightly different tone when talking about the home of Singapore Airlines, Singapore’s Changi International Airport.

When asked which his favorite airport in the region was, Mr. Fernandes simply answered, “It’s got to be Changi.”

Scoot to 5 cities by year's end

Updated 08:39 AM Feb 21, 2012

SINGAPORE - Scoot, the budget wing of Singapore Airlines, plans to fly to at least five cities by the end of the year as the group adds low-cost long-haul services to compete with Jetstar and AirAsia X.

Scoot intends to announce destinations in China and Japan, chief executive officer Campbell Wilson, 40, said in a Feb 17 Bloomberg interview in Singapore. The carrier, which is due to start flights in June or July, has already said it will fly to Sydney and the Gold Coast in Australia.

Singapore Airlines is forming Scoot after low-cost carriers won 26 per cent of travellers at its Changi Airport home, contributing to waning load factors and declining earnings. The carrier's passenger numbers rose 1.3 per cent last year, trailing an 11-per-cent surge for Changi.

SIA, the world's second-largest carrier by market value, filled 77 per cent of seats last month, a 1.1-percentage-point decline from a year earlier and the 18th straight drop.

"Singapore Airlines set us up to provide incremental traffic to the group," said Mr Wilson.

Scoot will fly services as long as nine hours and offer fares as much as 40 per cent cheaper than full-service carriers, according to New Zealand-born Mr Wilson, who has worked at SIA for more than 15 years.

The unit will complement the company's full-service business by either tapping new customers on existing routes or by adding new destinations that are predominately leisure markets, although Mr Wilson said Scoot does not plan to fly to Europe soon. "It's not a particularly attractive market at the moment."

Scoot will start operations with four Boeing 777-200s, purchased from its parent. The fleet will increase to 14 777s by the middle of the decade.

"The budget travel market is quite resilient," Mr Wilson said. "People still want to travel but they want to take a cheaper option and Scoot will provide them that."

Scoot has said it has startup capital of S$283 million. It will spend as much as S$60 million in the run-up to the start of its flights, Mr Wilson said. Scoot plans to have about 50 pilots and 250 cabin crew by the end of next year, and expects to fill 75 to 80 per cent of seats. BLOOMBERG

Not painted yet ... but the first four aircraft have been identified and are being re-registered.

9V-SQA has already received new registration 9V-OTA and the same will happen to 9V-SQB, 9V-SQC and 9V-SQD ... no price for guessing the registrations for these three aircraft. 9V-OTA should be going indoors soon for cabin re-configuration, repainting and other works ... and soon, test flight and first opportunity to photograph!!!

I think they just released information about their three-tiered fare structures : Fly, FlyBag, FlyBagEat ... or something stupid-sounding along these lines.
