Singapore Airlines to unveil new low-cost carrier on Nov 1

Oct 25 (Reuters) - Singapore Airlines Ltd will unveil the name of its new low-cost carrier and some of the destinations it will fly to on November 1, the company said on Tuesday.

SIA, the world's second-largest airline by market value, has provided little information about the new carrier, although the Straits Times newspaper has said it will start operations in April with one Boeing 777-200 aircraft.

The new long-haul carrier plans to operate 14 aircraft by mid-2016, the paper added.

SIA is already the largest shareholder in short-haul budget carrier Tiger Airways Holdings , and the new long-haul carrier will enable it to better compete with rivals such as AirAsia and JetStar, a unit of Qantas .

Not your usual airline name, not your usual airline

1 November 2011

Latest

NewsNews

ArchiveClearly not your usual airline name… and the company it identifies won’t be your usual airline.

“We chose the name ‘Scoot’ for many reasons, not least because it‘s different. Rather than the tried and tired “airlines” this, “airways” that or “air” yawn, it’s short, sharp and snappy. It stands out. It’s geographically independent, and can be a verb or a noun. Besides difference, it conveys spontaneity, movement, informality and a touch of quirkiness—all attributes we intend this Company to be known for,” said Scoot CEO Campbell Wilson.

“These attributes will be personified in a unique spirit that encapsulates our values and style, and that should be apparent to guests whenever they interact with us. An airline with a different attitude. People with a different attitude. Scootitude.”

Starting in mid-2012 with a fleet of four B777-200 aircraft purchased from parent company, Singapore Airlines (SIA), Scoot will offer no-frills service on medium to long haul routes to and from Singapore. It is managed and run independently from SIA, and already operates from separate offices.

Adhering to the low-frills spirit that has proven so popular in short haul arenas in Asia and around the world, Scoot will offer great value airfares up to 40% less than legacy carriers. Guests will be empowered to customize their travel to suit their personal requirements, partaking of only those elements they want and not subsidizing the choices of others. Meals, preferred seats and baggage, amongst many other items, will all be available for selection.

Scoot, which will operate from Changi Airport Terminal 2, will offer two cabins. Specific seats, cabin features and offerings are currently being evaluated.

The Airline’s first-year destinations will include Australasia, China and others – some routes being completely new, others new to no-frills airline operations. The specific cities will be progressively announced over the coming months as negotiations with airports and tourism bodies progress. Flights will open for booking in the early part of 2012.

Thereafter, as the fleet expands and longer-range aircraft are inducted, Scoot’s geographic footprint will steadily grow to encompass India, Europe and other markets at a later stage such as Africa and the Middle East.

The Airline is working closely with the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore for its Air Operator’s Certificate (AOC), and is proceeding on track for award around the end of the first quarter of 2012. Engineering retrofit and certification of aircraft is scheduled for April-June, and the first commercial flights are targeted for the middle of the year. Recruitment is well under way for administrative staff and pilots, and will commence in earnest for cabin crew in early 2012 with a public campaign.

“The team building Scoot is passionate about this new airline, what it stands for and how it can change the way people travel long distance,” said Wilson. “We’re equally passionate about incorporating Scootitude into all that we do. It promises to be a fun and exciting ride.”

Frankly he is premature in his comments. We do not have that many details about this airline yet. Even the livery is still an artist's impression:

Quite an immature thing for a CEO to say about another competitor.

Besides, AirAsia X isn't really original. What about Freddie Laker's Skytrain operations?

TF is forever trying to put the limelight back into Airasia, whenever the opportunity arises, even when it was inappropriate. Cheapskate publicity stunt. Belittling others to make self appear great, a recurring theme... Just scoot off!

The current whole Air Asia business model is copied from various airlines from Europe/USA too :finger:

Singapore Airlines names budget long-haul carrier 'Scoot'

Singapore Airlines (SIA) has confirmed its wholly-owned low-cost medium-long-haul carrier will be named "Scoot" and operate Boeing 777-200s in a two-class configuration with economy seating 3-4-3, as CAPA reported in September. Scoot is preparing to launch services around mid-2012 on medium and long-haul routes from its Singapore base. It plans to pursue a relatively high growth in its first four years, with its fleet slated to reach 16 aircraft in mid-2016.

“We chose the name ‘Scoot’ for many reasons, not least because it‘s different. Rather than the tried and tired 'airlines' this, 'airways' that or 'air' yawn, it’s short, sharp and snappy. It stands out. It’s geographically independent, and can be a verb or a noun. Besides difference, it conveys spontaneity, movement, informality and a touch of quirkiness—all attributes we intend this Company to be known for,” said Scoot CEO Campbell Wilson in a statement.

Scoot was trademarked earlier this year by New Aviation, the working name of the airline. Mr Wilson is a 15-year veteran of SIA.

"The light, bright logo conveys warmth, energy and informality, while the tilted 't' of the name Scoot hints that this airline is not cut from the same conformist mould of others," Scoot said in a statement. "The aircraft livery, with its waves and colour, likewise gives a sense of motion, happiness, lightheartedness and youth, reflecting a casual, leisure-oriented vibe that should capture and enhance the mood of those travelling."

Mr Campbell added: “These attributes will be personified in a unique spirit that encapsulates our values and style, and that should be apparent to guests whenever they interact with us. An airline with a different attitude. People with a different attitude. Scootitude.”

The branding was created by Singapore agency Sparkfury and sister agency Tangoshark.

Scoot says the public will be invited to make a tagline for the carrier.

Engineering retrofit and certification of Scoot's first B777-200, a former Singapore Airlines aircraft, is scheduled for April-June-2012. Ticket sales will commence next year on initial routes to Asia and Australasia. Scoot is targeting routes over four hours and expects to eventually also serve points in Europe - including the UK - and the Middle East. Only Southeast Asia is ruled out as flights to points in that region are under four hours.

Scoot had been interested in wireless streaming in-flight entertainment, in-flight connectivity and pay-as-you-go power supply, as we reported in September. But Scott says no decision on those features have been made. "Specific seats, cabin features and offerings are currently being evaluated."

Scoot will operate from Singapore Changi's terminal two, as opposed to the low-cost carrier terminal, which would be stretched to accommodate B777s.

I know Dato' TF used to work for Sir Richard Branson, no doubt some of the impression would come from the Virgin. So how so not original? If AK is really a copycat, how would it still win the best low cost airlines consecutively? Does it copy from anyone to initiate the zero fares?

There is nothing wrong being copycat really - TF should know that as he is one himself!

However, like the Japanese (who were amongst the first in Asia to copy successful American products), AirAsia Group not only copied but improved on the original. That is why they are successful.

As we have seen many companies in Malaysia have all the ingredients for success. However their execution is poor. So they snatch failure from the jaws of success! Having the theory is one thing, executing it is another. AirAsia have executed the theory briliantly and that is why it their business grew at a phenomenal rate.

I tend to agree. If the copycat has violated the international laws, AK would have already been sued so much earlier. However, they have innovated and improved from time to time. The expansion is great, but you would never enjoy really cheap fares like you used to before.

Well hopefully Scoot is not like AK where they reduce and eventually cut unprofitable route as they like. Talk about confused puppy!

It is a copycat whether you like it or not and winning the best low cost airlines again and again has absolutely nothing to do with it being the pioneer of the no frills travel concept in this world or otherwise. He was saying another airline are copying his airline as if he did not do the same over a decade ago :nea: My comment earlier only came after reading his tweet.

Yeah. However, being a copycat himself, he shouldn't publicly calling another potential competing carrier as one.

Scoot to launch services by mid-2012

Singapore Airlines' (SIA) new long-haul low-cost carrier Scoot will launch services by the first half of 2012.

The carrier will start operations with four Boeing 777-200s and grow to a fleet of 14 aircraft by 2016, said CEO Campbell Wilson.

He added that the aircraft will be purchased from SIA and that the airline will fly to at least four destinations initially, including cities in Australia and China.

Scoot will also be purchasing 777-200ERs, which have a longer range, and therefore be able to offer services to destinations in Europe, Africa and the Middle East, said Wilson.

The purchased aircraft will go through heavy maintenance checks, with the interiors refurbished and retrofitted for Scoot, Wilson told reporters.

The aircraft will have a two-class cabin with 32 to 40 premium seats and about 370 economy seats in a 3-4-3 configuration.

Scoot will operate out of Singapore's Changi Airport Terminal 2 as the Budget Terminal is unable to accommodate widebodies, added Wilson.

The low-cost carrier, which will be managed separately from SIA, expects to receive its Air Operator's Certificate by the first quarter of 2012.

"We are not a substitution of SIA, the mission is to bring incremental numbers to grow the SIA group. Whether it is new routes or targeting new markets on existing routes, we are incrementing," said Wilson.

He added that Scoot will also be able to leverage on SIA's expertise and experience in fuel hedging and currency hedging, but that the airline has the mandate to make independent decisions when necessary.

Kuala Lumpur-based AirAsia X, in which Malaysian low-cost carrier AirAsia has a 16% stake, pioneered the long-haul low-cost model in Southeast Asia in 2007 and its network now includes London, Paris, Tehran, Gold Coast, Melbourne, Christchurch, New Delhi, Mumbai, Chengdu, Tianjin, Hangzhou, Taipei, Seoul, Tokyo and Perth.

Scoot will differentiate itself from its competitors with its "short, sharp, catchy" name and attitude, said Wilson.

Scoot should do SIN - SYD, just to show how easy it is for them to get SYD. :p

Yes they should - if they do, pax just need to take an AK flight to connect. AK will then be able to put on even more KUL-SIN flights! :)

But I would think that any D7 service out of SIN will have most of the pax who connect at SIN. Only a small proportion of the pax will come from KUL.

It is strange that JetStar does not fly its A330s from SIN-SYD. Pax wanting to fly Jetstar will have to fly to MEL and then catch a domestic JetStar flight from MEL-SYD.

I think cutting unprofitable routes is a fact of life on LCCs. This is because they are always forced to try new routes to secondary lower cost airports. If the market is insufficient to support these unproven routes, they will not hesitate to cut them.

I think that Scoot should do well if SQ copies what Qantas/JetStar does. Somehow, it also needs to weave Tiger Airways into the whole setup too. It should be interesting to see what comes out of this.
