MAS Current Fleet Withdrawal Thread

Recommended Posts

Think they need more a330 with newer products as a replacement for 772.

The current A330 fleet should be around for at least another 10 years as they are quite new. The A350-900 will join from 2017.

With MH not being able to fill up their planes, they should consider looking at the A321NEO for some of their regional routes - this will definitely offer a better product than the B738. Vietnam Airlines, Philippine Airlines and Eva Air are amongst those East Asian airlines that are presently using the A321 to good effect.

If MH has A321NEOs for regional routes, it can perhaps grow the A350-900 fleet and resume some of their long haul routes in 3 or 4 years. Meanwhile, the existing A330s can undergo cabin refits to make them more competitive for the >6 hour routes like PEK, NRT. SYD, etc.

Anybody knows which batch of 737 were supposed to go to Firefly after 9M-FFF, had they not been prematurely killed? I guess its the ML + MS series?

I believe that FY had their own order book - they have their own Boeing customer code. e.g. 9M-FFF was a Boeing 737-8FZ(WL)...

If their aircraft were coming from MH, I would think it would be from the ML series as all their B737s were leased.

IMO introducing B737-900ERs to complement existing B738s might be better from fleet commonality viewpoint.

BTW FZ is Boeing customer code for Babcock & Brown. Seems that FY doesn't have a specific Boeing customer code at this moment.

If MH places orders for new aircraft, they should be B737 Max 9's. However, these are not the best aircraft for the medium range missions on MH's routes. In fact, most airlines that need this category of performance have ordered A321NEOs.

IMHO, MH should use the B737-800 for short haul domestic and ASEAN routes, A321/A330 for regional routes and A350/A380 for intercontinental long haul routes.

-MLD to -MLF & -FFD to -FFF are the same planes reregistered.

if I'm not mistaken MLD is ex-OK Airways plane. with purple seats on both J and Y class.

FFD,FFE previously flown with South African Airways, the 738 with eyebrows

only MLA to MLC that have been reregistered to FFA to FFC

MH originally intent to lease only used aircraft for FY, evident by first few B738. The B738NG order placed by MH was all meant for mainline MH service only.

"Firefly will operate six Boeing 737-800s in 2011 and by 2012 this will increase to 13 aircraft. There will of course be announcements of new routes in the future as our fleet grows.” Managing Director Dato’ Eddy Leong stated during the unvieling ceremony of FY's first B738. Link

The 12 B738 with different codes above tallied with FY's initial plan. 9M-FFA, 9M-FFB, 9M-FFC have since left FY/MH fleet.

I would like to see MH's colour on Airbus narrowbody, however with excess plane capacity now, I don't think MH will buy/lease new aircraft type.

I tend to agree with you on this - MAB needs to stabilise the ship right now. So it has to downsize to ensure that it is easier to manage. It is also laying down foundations for future expansion.

Any orders for new aircraft will only be made to fill up any holes or gaps in their operations, Long term fleet replacement decisions will be postponed until the airline has shown signs of recovery and new plans for the airline can be made.

Sadly true. MH needs to do a Japan Airlines-style on turnaround. Back then, JL retired entire 747 fleet, shutdown JALCargo........what an un-glamorous end for both. Shed thousands of employee.

Malaysia Airlines's latest B737-8H6 cn 41767/5615 is now ntu, delivered to Pegasus Airlines as TC-CPY.

Source:

http://www.trfleetnews.com/pegasus-with-a-new-boeing/

https://www.planespotters.net/airframe/Boeing/737/41767/TC-CPY-Pegasus

Malaysia Airlines placed an order for 35 firm plus 20 options B737-800 back in 2008.

In 2011, they converted 10 options to firm order. Delivery was to commence in 2016.

Thus total firm order was to be 45 with 10 options.

Currently the total number of B737NG (owned and leased) operated is 57.

Leased birds (9M-FF* and 9M-ML*) total of 22.

57-22= 35 birds, exact figure as per original firm order.

Those 10 firm order exercised in 2011 will never be delivered. MH might have incur penalty for cancelling at last minute.

Why they withdrawn too many of the 777?

Downsizing of business. Most route previously flown with B777 has been cancelled/ on the brink on being cancelled (CDG/AMS).

At least she has found a new home, not going to the graveyard or being scrapped

Not really, no new owner yet. She was re-registered with lessor's registration and landed at Spain Teruel Airport recently. The airport is now overcrowded with Transaero and UTair fleet after both airlines are returning hundreds of plane even brand new A321. More to come.......

They are also scrapping few aircraft at situ as well.

Yes, she looks bad.

Last year, Shaheen suffered similar runway excursion due to bird strike prior to landing. The bird struck the nose gear few seconds before landing. Nose gear collapsed upon touching down. The aircraft was AP-BJN ex-9M-MQC. Still stored unrepaired in LHR till today.

Perhaps they may call MH soon for more B734....

has the old MAB 737 interior be phased out of the fleet?

the conditions of some of the seats is terrible

Yes, MH is currently retiring 22 leased aircraft.

9M-MLD was returned to lessor in August 2015.

9M-FFD is currently being prepared to return to lessor, doing test flight at SZB nowadays.

You may keep track here of the retirement at http://www.malaysianwings.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=15996&page=26
