New Medan Airport - Kuala Namu International

Recommended Posts

I wonder if Indonesia is building a new, bigger airport for Medan.

Saw this while flying in from PEn. It was north-east of Polonia, next to the coastline.

Its about time that they build a new airport which is safe from the surrounding terrain and have room for expansion.Have not flown to Medan/polonia for a while, but the same cannot be said about the airport at Jogjakarta,Solo,Bandung,Manado .Its nice that the new airport at Padang is pilot friendly(safe from surrounding terrain and ILS equipped) as opposed to the old airport.

Anybody know when the new airport for Medan, Indonesia will be open?

Picture taken on Feb 22nd, 2011.

The current airport is getting very congested, with no parallel taxiway and high terrain on the approach side.

For tonnes of information on KNIA, maybe this link could help.

The masterplan is on this page (51) and the latest update photos are in page 60.

That airport is going to be huge when all the three phases are completed.

Thanks for the link; that's mean KNIA is about to be completed.

Capt Radzi

Tnx for the beautiful pic. Just curious, what will be the ICAO and IATA codes for the new airport? KNIA sounds more like a US airport

Should be a nice hop from PEN to there.

I've read somewhere around the net that the new airport will be renamed Adam Malik International Airport upon the completion (in honor of Adam Malik,Former Foreign Minister and Vice President of Indonesia who passed away in 1984).

Big spanking new airport

Wonder if there will be resistance from any airline(s) to relocate to the new place ?

Or the airport authorities there not accomodative enough to such airlines ?

:p

The old Polonia Airport is supposed to be closed for commercial activities once KNIA is active. Not sure if any military activities will still take place there but chances are quite unlikely.

Aside from overcapacity and inability to expand due to its urban surrounding, those living around it are exposed to high-risk of accidents (like the old mandala crash few years back).

Talks of speeding up relocation of the airport surfaced after that crash and so, it is very likely that the airport will soon be closed for operation and all activities relocated.

It's a pity considering Polonia is one of the few classic airport still in operation today, but nevertheless, the need to expand is getting very urgent now that domestic air travel is booming in Indonesia.

Now if the Polonia is closed down, we believe it will still be MES for the new airport too, not too sure about the WIMM though.

Meanwhile, the name Adam Malik International Airport is likely for a spanking new airport like that, but nothing confirmed for now.

Thanks for the pix, Capt Radzi! :)

It looks like the parallel taxiway extends to half the length of the runway only - perhaps it will be extended to full length in the future phases of the airport. I wonder what is the length of the runway - it looks like 3 to 4 km.

QZ is planning to set up a hub there - should be interesting into fly to a new airport! :)

Kuala Namu is almost ready and slated for opening in July 2013.

While a pilot who is experienced with Polonia airport should know the difference, Kuala Namu looks very much like an operational airport.

Malaysia Airlines will move its 14 times weekly flights between Kuala Lumpur and Medan to Kuala Namu International Airport effective 25 July 2013.

Kuala Namu International Airport, which will be replacing the current airport, Polonia International Airport is the second largest in Indonesia after Soekarno-Hatta Airport in Jakarta. The 70-year old Polonia International Airport is already the fourth busiest airport in the country after Jakarta, Bali and Surabaya.

Malaysia Airlines flight MH860 departs Kuala Lumpur daily at 8:50am and arrives in Medan at 8:50am local time. Malaysia Airlines’ second daily flight MH864 departs Kuala Lumpur at 3pm and arrives in Medan at 3pm local time.

The daily return flight, MH861, departs Medan at 9:30am and arrives in Kuala Lumpur at 11:25am, while MH865 departs at 3:45pm and arrives in Kuala Lumpur at 5:40pm

And so is Firefly

Firefly would like to announce that we will be moving our Medan operations from Polonia International Airport to Kuala Namu International Airport on July 25, 2013. Firefly flights from Subang SkyPark and Penang International Airport bound for Medan will arrive at Kuala Namu International Airport.

Firefly passengers travelling to and/or from Medan from July 25 onwards will be sent an update on their flight details and new airport code within the week. Passengers are reminded to ensure their email and mobile contact details are current and active for notification.

They may also contact our call centre +603-7845 4543 or go online at www.fireflyz.com.my for more information. For current updates, follow us on Twitter (twitter.com/flyfirefly) and Facebook (facebook.com/Firefly).

Kuala Namu International Airport is the second largest airport in Indonesia after Soekarno-Hatta Airport in Jakarta. Medan’s present Polonia Airport, which is located on the outskirts of Medan, is currently over-congested and will be converted into a military airport.

Where is Kuala Namu International Airport located?

Kuala Namu Airport is located at Deli Serdang regency in North Sumatera. The airport is located approximately 45 km from Medan city center.
