ANA Rumoured to Take Over 3/6 of Skymark's A380s

Recommended Posts

Japanese low-cost carrier Skymark Airlines has signed a firm agreement to order up to six Airbus A380s, becoming the first Japanese carrier to acquire the superjumbo.

The airline inked a deal in Toulouse yesterday to purchase four A380s with two options, says an airline official.

Deliveries will begin in the second half of 2014 with the airline receiving two aircraft, he adds. The third A380 will arrive in 2015, and the fourth in 2016.

Last November, the airline signed a tentative agreement with Airbus to acquire four A380s.

Skymark, based at Tokyo's Haneda Airport, has not made an engine selection for the aircraft, says the official.

"We believe that the A380, the world's most cost-efficient, modern and environmentally friendly aircraft with cutting-edge technologies, will provide us with a strong competitive advantage and safe operation," says the airline's president Shinichi Nishikubo.

The airline plans to operate the aircraft on long-haul routes from Tokyo. Reports say it could operate the A380s to London, Paris and Frankfurt.

Skymark currently operates a fleet of 18 Boeing 737-800s on domestic routes, according to Flightglobal's ACAS database.

I remember Tony Fernandes once said that the A380 is not for them. He said something to the effect that "the A380 was way beyond our league..."

Reading the threads at A.net they are saying that AirAsia X is the most likely LCC to order the A380 next. So they might have changed their minds.

It may make sense for D7 to use the A380 for its STN route and then continue to the EWR-LAX-KUL making it a round the world route. They can then do the same thing in the reverse direction, KUL-LAX-EWR-STN-KUL. The A380 could be configured for cattle class on the lower deck, premium economy with wider seats and 34" pitch on the upper deck together with about 30+ lie flat seats. This might result in a 600+ capacity.

D7 will be very bold if it attempts an unproven route with an unproven aircraft (for LCCs). So they might watch Skymark's move to order the A380 with great interest!

Airbus Said to Drop Skymark’s A380 Order on Cash Shortage

Airbus Group (AIR) NV has agreed to drop an order for six A380 superjumbos from Japan’s Skymark Airlines Inc. (9204), said people familiar with the decision, in a blow to the program that’s struggled to keep customers.

Skymark can’t afford the aircraft, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the discussions are private. Negotiations between the two sides continue about compensation and a possible cancellation of the order, Skymark President Shinichi Nishikubo said in a statement on the company’s website.

Losing the Skymark order extends a drought for the A380, which has failed to attract a new airline customer in two years and came away with no new business this month at the Farnborough Air Show, typically a forum for deals. Airbus’s most loyal buyer for the aircraft is Emirates, with 50 in service and a total of 140 on order, almost half the backlog.

“It’s hard to see how this ends,” said Richard Aboulafia, vice president at the Teal Group, based in Fairfax, Virginia. “They have exactly one enthusiastic customer.”

Skymark shares dropped as much as 8 percent to 265 yen as of 11:25 a.m. in Tokyo trading after gaining as much as 12 percent earlier. Airbus fell 48 cents, or 1.1 percent, to 44.02 euros in Paris trading yesterday, extending a drop this year to 21 percent and cutting Airbus’s market value to about 34.5 billion euros ($46.35 billion).

Skymark Airlines A380 orders are in serious doubt as Airbus recommends an 'umbrella' solution

The allure of big boys' toys appears likely to cost Japan's low-cost Skymark Airlines its reputation, a lot of money and most importantly management focus at the very time when Skymark needed to respond to a raft of new LCC competition in its domestic heartland. Skymark is putting a bold face on the planned delay – or even cancellation – of six A380s it has had on order since 2010, taking the position that the best defence is a strong offence. A statement talked of Airbus imposing "an exorbitant penalty that evades common sense" if the order is cancelled. It appears from the statement that Airbus has sought to find a way out for independent Skymark, "to enter under the umbrella of a major airline."
Negotiations to delay delivery or cancel have, according to Skymark, been under way since Apr-2014. Skymark gives the reason for its move as a "business environment [that] has become severe due to increased competition and the depreciation of the yen in recent years".
Its international route plans had shortcomings for Skymark's first international excursion. Airbus has already begun trial flights with the first new aircraft, complete with Skymark's logo and partial interior. Two A380s were due for delivery in 2014, with another two in each of 2015 and 2016. The order – valued at USD1.3 billion at rack rates – was always a strange one that few in the industry considered a safe one.
There will be much to come out in the wash but Skymark can recover and emerge stronger. A cancellation of Skymark Airlines' six A380s would enable – and force – Skymark to hone the strengths it created in Japan's domestic market before it overly-ambitiously leaps from operating only domestically to long-haul all-premium A380 services.

Airbus terminates purchase order with Skymark Airlines for A380s

29 JULY 2014 PRESS RELEASE
Following discussions with Skymark Airlines and in light of the airline’s expressed intentions in respect of the A380, Airbus has in accordance with its contractual rights, notified Skymark Airlines that the purchase order for the six A380s signed in 2011 has been terminated. Airbus is reserving all its rights and remedies.

MAS should probably think of picking up two or three of these so that all their EU routes can be operated by A380s. Their Asian and Aussie routes can be served by A333s. Then they can retire the B772s for good.

this is so true, and by default all the old livery associated and beamed around the world would be gone with the 777's.

can someone get this info to ahmad jauhari, adding on the 2 380's at cheap prices?

According to Airbus, the two frames already built for this year's deliveries to Skymark are not yet customised. So I would think airlines like BA (who are very happy with their A380s), SQ, MH and other RR engine operators might be interested in topping up their fleet.

Operating an A380 is really expensive. Can MH operate A380s to AMS and FRA profitability in the wake of MH17 and MH370?

Have to look at it long term.

Skymark's frames will take time to arrive - I would think that any order given today will only be delivered in 2015. AMS used to be served by B744s. So it should not be too difficult. FRA is a bit more competitive as LH is now serving it direct. However, MH will have to work to get pax to fill the planes - in the same manner as it did to fill the CDG flights.

FRA may not be as sexy as CDG but if you target the right customers, you should get some results.

Anyway, all this is speculation - note that ALL of Skymark's aircraft are leased. They could not find someone to finance their A380s and that was why Airbus cancelled the order. Lessors are bean counters - so MH will need to find a great business case to convice the financiers before they can put in any orders.

Operating A380 is only marginal (2% to 3%) more expensive than 744.

To compete with ME3, the rebirth MH may need to offer double daily to FRA, CDG, AMS with a smaller aircraft e.g. 787 or A338neo.

According to Flyteam of Japan, ANA will take over JA380A and JA380B currently sitting at the Tarmac of Airbus factory in Toulouse. Those are the aircraft unable to be taken up by Skymark. The third A380 of skymark is partially completed and will be taken up by ANA too by 2018.

ANA will use them on their Hawaiian routes, while it is not mentioned whether it will be in ANA or Skymark livery.

Great news to hear. ANA went all out to prevent Skyteam from gaining any foothold at HND and NRT while at the same time got arm twisted into dealing with Airbus, which ANA have never deal before for widebodies.

I wonder how Delta Airlines will view the situation though since they placed a big order with Airbus last year. Then again, Delta Airlines has much more rational thinking and doesn't do tit-for-tat.

By the way, JA380C was not built at all. The parts were reassigned to other aircraft.
