RMAF Herkybirds to fly students out of Egypt

Recommended Posts

Besides the free flow of accolades to the air force, Air Asia, MAS , and Saudi Air, there are many flaks to echoed by folks who seems to have been left high and dry without any assistance from the embassy there. Perhaps this folks were the 1st.batches of folks who scurried earlier and being the chaotic situation it is, many of the calls went unanswered, and many of the replies were not forth-coming and assuring.

The government should take notes of this, and set better protocols for mass evacuation situation for all its embassies around the world. In the environment where mobster rules the streets and enforcers are none to be seen around, the embassies should be vigilant at all times, and to ensure any communication coming thru to the embassy is answered and assistance is rendered as much as possible.

They should have place immediately a representative at airport since it is the only available exit out of the country.

I guess our embassy is pretty complacent in this case and did not react in the utmost urgency as possible.

Until the embassy clarifies itself, the government would have to do its own damage control..

And kudos again to all the fliers who risked everything to fly over and rescue our fellow Malaysians.

Powerful connections and still they can't fly to SYD?

Maybe they didn't requested SYD from the 1Madam.

are they going to use QR equipment all the way?

QR code shares with MH on KUL-BKI. Therefore it was probably a QR coded flight all the way, but of course not on QR metal on the final sector into BKI.

Some more photos from the Tabung Haji hostel in Jeddah. The place turns very lively in what supposed to be an off season period.

The Malaysians made the news in Saudi Arabia.

Evacuees housed in pilgrims’ city

JEDDAH: The thousands of Malaysian students evacuated from Egypt have been temporarily housed at the pilgrims’ city in downtown Jeddah.

A number of the students met on Saturday evening with the minister from the Malaysian prime minister’s office, Seri Jamil Khir, and prime ministerial political secretary Shahlan Bin Ismail, both of whom were in Jeddah to oversee the evacuation.

“We are happy to have the support of the Saudi Arabian government,” Shahlan told Arab News. “Saudi Arabia is a very stable country which guarantees the safety to our students. Getting help at such short notice isn’t easy. We hope when our remaining students in Egypt arrive in Jeddah, they can stay for a week here. Then we’ll do our best to get them home,” said Shahlan.

Malaysian students in Egypt are majoring in a number of subjects, particularly medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, Arabic and Islamic studies. Many of those who arrived in Jeddah included wives and children.

One of the female students, heavily pregnant when she arrived, had to be rushed to hospital in Jeddah shortly afterward where she gave birth to a baby. Others with families are still in Egypt. “They are expected to arrive soon,” Shahlan said.

“Our students were lucky in the sense that, they just recently have finished their examination at their universities and are in effect on holiday,” he added.

He was hopeful that the situation in Egypt would soon calm down, thus allowing students to return there to finish their studies. But that would not happen until the Egyptian government made it clear it was safe to send them back.

Malaysian evacuees to land in Jeddah

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia has allowed Malaysian planes carrying thousands of its students from Egypt to land at King Abdul Aziz International Airport (KAIA) in Jeddah.

The students will be evacuated from Egypt in a phased manner within the next few days as nationwide protests against President Hosni Mubarak gain momentum in Egypt.

The first two planes, carrying about 600 Malaysian students, were expected in Jeddah early Friday.

"Jeddah will serve as a transit point for Malaysian students," said Ahmad Husni A. Basri, spokesman for the Malaysian Consulate in Jeddah, on Thursday. Ahmad thanked Saudi officials for their help and providing all logistical support in facilitating the evacuation.

According to a report published in the Malaysian media on Thursday, Prime Minister Najib Razak sent a message to Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah thanking him for his support. The premier expressed gratitude for allowing Malaysian aircraft to use Jeddah’s Haj Terminal as a transit point for the evacuees before they proceed to Malaysia.

A Malaysian diplomat said more than 11,000 students from Egypt would be evacuated. The students will be flown out on Malaysia Airlines and AirAsia planes. Plans have been made to fly at least 3,000 students from Cairo to Jeddah every day from Friday, he added.

He said Malaysia's National Security Council has been entrusted with the rescue mission in Egypt. Each flight from Cairo to Jeddah will carry a total of at least 345 stranded Malaysians.

The Kingdom has already evacuated a large number of its own nationals. Currently, the United States and Iraq are evacuating their citizens, while Turkey, India, Greece and Canada have sent planes to do so.

About 18,000 to 25,000 travelers can be seen at any given time at Cairo International Airport trying to find a way out of the country as protests against Mubarak mount.

Check-in counters remain poorly staffed, mainly because many employees are unable to reach work due to curfew, while others are delayed because of severe traffic congestion across the Egyptian capital.

Malaysian students to fly home today

RIYADH: About 540 Malaysian students airlifted from strife-torn Egypt to Jeddah in a massive ongoing evacuation operation supported by the Saudi government will leave for Kuala Lumpur on board a Malaysian Airline System flight on Sunday evening, according to Malaysian Ambassador Syed Omar Al-Saggaf.

Al-Saggaf said that another group of 2,000 students would be rescued from Egypt and flown to Jeddah in a staggered schedule on Saturday and Sunday. So far 4,914 students have been brought from Cairo to Jeddah on their way back home. Nine thousand of the estimated 11,700 Malaysian students will pass through Jeddah before the operation is complete.

“The rare gesture of support and solidarity shown by Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah has made this impossible evacuation operation possible,” said Al-Saggaf.

Asked about the shelter provided by the Malaysian diplomatic mission, the ambassador said that an operations room had been set up at the pilgrims’ city in Jeddah that could accommodate 3,000 people. He said that the relatives and friends of the students could contact the operation room at 009-662-672-6191 for more information. The students, if their number grows, would also be accommodated at the Tabung Haji Hostel.

One of the reasons behind Kuala Lumpur's decision to bring students to Jeddah first and then send them home was so that the flight could return quickly to Cairo to pick up the next batch of students. Eight planes are being used in this operation. More than 11,700 students registered with the Malaysian Embassy in Egypt were in the process of being evacuated, he added.

Apart from the cost of the 2 B744s being used in the operation being sponsored by the Crown Prince, Prince Turki Al Saud, the 7 days visa on arrival granted to all Malaysians from Egypt in this operation is the first of its kind ever introduced in the history of Saudi Arabia's immigration (as I was told). It is really some serious special gestures being accorded to us Malaysian by the Saudis.

Really "sopan" this uniform... :good: :good:

I believe Garuda stewardesses wear veils/tudungs for CGK/JED route too. Eventhough I like the tudung clad crew, AK should just stick to its current uniform. Air Asia is all about short skirted girls in red.

The complex must be something like a boarding school back in M'sia.

Never been to this complex. We flew direct to Mekah in white loin clothes, and returned to KUL from MED. So must have missed this complex. Stayed in a 2 persons per room and the hotel is so near to the mosque. We walked for about 400mtrs for the jamrah rituals. Not that bad experience :pardon:

Tahniah to MAS, Air Asia and other participating parties. :clapping:

AK's covered uniform makes the FAs much cuter IMHO. They really should think about offering this option to their FA uniforms, no matter where they go.

Agree with you..More "mysterious/ unknowns" and leaves more to the imagination...

..in today's NSTP on line report, the whole herculean task of evacuating the students has cost the government a staggering RM50Million plus for the 11 day operations...

..In addition, it was reported also that only the students and officials there are given this "rescue" while the rest paid for their own fare.. ah...aren't they Malaysians too? I hope I read it right that the MOD meant otherwise, or mis-interpreted on this issue.

Why stereotyping fellow Malaysians with students and officials and others? When in times of emergencies as such, all Malaysians should be assisted whether students, officials or otherwise..

It takes a lot of logistics to have a B747 transit in TGG, so it is quite unlikely, but not impossible.

Kohilan: Pay own way back to Egypt

February 14, 2011

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 14 — Malaysian students returning to Egypt will have to bear the travelling cost, said Deputy Foreign Minister A. Kohilan Pillay.

He, however, advised parents to wait for directive from the Malaysian embassy in Egypt before making a decision.

“Students will have to bear the travel cost to Egypt. This has been our practice all along.

“The situation over there has improved but it has yet to return to normal,” he said after attending an oathtaking ceremony for members of Dewan Negara in Parliament today.

Kohilan advised Malaysians in Egypt to take care of their safety despite the improved situation.

“About 2,000 Malaysian students are still in Egypt after refusing to return during ‘Ops Piramid’ as they are worried about their studies.”

He said the final group of Malaysians will arrive KL International Airport (KLIA) from Jeddah today on two flights, Malaysia Airlines and Saudi Arabian Airlines.

There are some 11,000 Malaysian students in Egyptian universities.

Malaysians in Libya to be evacuated

By LESTER KONG

lester@thestar.com.my

PETALING JAYA: The 190 Malaysians, including seven tertiary students, in Libya will be evacuated as the tense situation in Tripoli looks to be worsening.

Deputy Foreign Minister A. Kohilan Pillay said the riots had escalated and the Foreign Ministry felt there was cause to get the Malaysians out of the country for their safety.

“The situation has become critical. It was okay in the afternoon. Now, it’s a different story,” he said when contacted last night.

Kohilan said his ministry was working with the National Security Council to develop a plan with the Malaysian embassy in Tripoli.

“We will begin the process of evacuating them very soon,” he said last night.

He said the number of Malaysians involved were not as big as that in Cairo during the Ops Piramid exercise which involved 7,000 Malaysians.

“But we will work as fast as possible to get them out. We will have more details by tomorrow (today),” he said.

Human rights groups in Libya have estimated that nearly 300 have been killed following clashes between anti-government protesters and security forces.

The protests launched this month are aimed at unseating Libya’s strongman leader Muammar Gaddafi who has ruled the oil-rich north African nation for four decades.

Kohilan said most Malaysians were working in smaller towns in Libya at manufacturing plants, adding that some were construction workers or business owners.

Meanwhile, a Malaysian embassy spokesman in Tripoli said Ranhill Bhd had about 70 Malaysians working on a housing project in the country, MERGAWATI ZULFAKAR reports.

They were ready to be evacuated if the situation in Tripoli worsened, he said.

“As far as we are concerned, the workers are all okay. We are in touch with them and have told them to contact us if anything untoward happens,” the spokesman said.

from here

190 in Libya compared to the number evacuated from Egypt - should be piece of cake lah :D

Still, I don't see anyone tripping over themselves in rush to gain brownie points this time round ? :p
