LCCT may be built in Perak, says MB

SEPANG, Jan 13 — A low-cost carrier terminal (LCCT) may be built in Perak to fuel its economic growth and development of the Northern Corridor Economic Region.

 

Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Zambry Abdul Kadir said several rounds of discussions have been held with low-cost carrier AirAsia.

 

“I hope the proposal will be forwarded to the federal government for consideration. However, the idea is still at initial stage. We’ve to study it from all aspects.

 

“However, early planning has already started. It’s only a matter of time before we formally propose to the federal government to study the proposal in greater detail on the suitability and viability of a new airport.

 

“It all depends on the federal government on what it has to say about it,” he told reporters after accompanying the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Azlan Shah, who visited the LCCT, AirAsia office and the airline’s academy here.

 

Zambry (picture) said a prospective site has been identified in the corridor region in northern Perak.

 

“It is not at the existing airport. It’s difficult for us to expand the existing airport because Ipoh and the surrounding area are already quite congested as well.

 

“It’s very much developed. We’ve no choice. We’ve to look for a new area. We’ve already proposed to AirAsia several locations and they have also sent their team to study the locations and have decided on the area,” he said.

 

On the state government’s role in building the LCCT, Zambry said the state government would facilitate all the processes.

 

He said Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd, operator of the country’s airports, has been informed of the proposal.

 

“We will bring them together at this stage because we would like to also hear from them, he said.

 

On the purpose of today’s visit, Zambry said: “We just want to get ourselves familiar with the LCCT. That’s all.”

 

Meanwhile, AirAsia Group chief executive officer Datuk Seri Tony Fernandes said having a LCCT in the north was one of the opportunities for the airline.

 

“That is one opportunity but it is still at a very early stage. Obviously, we have been always looking at something up north and how it turns up.

 

“We’ve always said we need a low-cost airport or a terminal in the north. We always believe in that strongly,” he said.

 

Fernandes said a low-cost airline could provide tremendous growth to the northern corridor.

 

“We’ve always said there should be a LCCT in the north if you really want to provide economic development but it’s really up to the government.

 

“We see it as an opportunity. It’s a tremendous opportunity, especially with the entry point projects under the Economic Transformation Programme…for something to serve the north,” he said.

 

Asked whether AirAsia would build its own airport in the north, Fernandes said: “No. AirAsia is an airline. We will focus on moving people from A to B and that’s our job. It’s not our job to build airports.” — Bernama

It's a disguised blessing that Labu International Airport didn't materialize then ;)

Wonder what would be going through head of those Sime Darby chaps when they read this :lol:

Any airports developmnents regardless of an expansion or new ; Feasibility study must be made in terms of anticipated numbers and traffic. None of us would want to waste our "Rakyat" money for some big white elephant that's under utilise.

 

I strongly support only if the numbers are there. One must remember it's not cheap to built an airport and such facility is not a Bus Shed / STOL operations.

Labu was an act of desperation as MAB had dragged its feet on building the permanent LCCT! Now that AirAsia is able to postpone a lot of aircraft deliveries, it is no longer so urgent. Besides, they are not in such a hurry to build an LCCT in Perak - they prefer it to be closer to or in Penang.

I always thought Labu was a way for certain people to make lots of money.. Remember it was already approved behind doors. But when it was revealed, the public made a huge outcry, so the then PM had to retract the plan or face a public backlash (He was booted out of office anyway).

 

The plan for new LCCT near KLIA was hastily brought up but TF didn't like it at first, soil not good and what, aircraft might get stuck in mud, lots of excuses la. The plan went ahead anyway cause the public didn't want Labu but someone has to make lots of money. So the cost keep going up and up to the extent it's no longer fit to be called LCCT, it's now called KLIA 2, a whole new airport with its own runway.

I think they will prefer built LCCT in Penang airport area since there got a good connection with other international route..

Plus there is a hub in Penang international airport

So in a sense, taxpayers are subsidizing AK/AKX. :)

In a sense it is because MAB is a GLC. But then we know what happens when GLCs dish out contracts right?

 

Having said that, taxpayers will benefit in the long run. The LCCT/KLIA2 generates a lot more revenue and profits for MAB than the MTB. In a way, that was what attracted SD and TF to the somewhat risky Labu project. The promise of fantastic ROI...

 

So if the MAB don't screw up (look at what is happening at T2 in SZB) the taxpayer should benefit directly from the profits KLIA2 generates. Plus all the extra tourism RM that will flow in. On top of that, MH, FY, AK, etc. will have to pay more corporate taxes on their profits. The revenue chain can be pretty long, provided there is no leakage! ;)

They should just rename the current ipoh airport as LCCT by lowering the airport charges to minimum to encourage someone to land there. At least no dollar of tax payers money will be used.

Remember that the key word here is not airport, but built. The money is in the construction.

Big plans to lift Perak economy

Zambry said initial discussions with the Federal Government for Perak to set up its own low-cost carrier terminal (LCCT) in the northern part of the state has taken place.

 

“We hope the Government will give it due consideration. The site is expected to take up 4,000 acres in the vicinity of Parit Buntar and Taiping, which is in the area of the Northern Corridor Economic Region.

 

The construction will likely cost half a billion ringgit, and it will be funded by the private sector,” he said.

 

Zambry, together with Perak Sultan Azlan Shah and Regent Raja Dr Nazrin Shah have formed a team to lobby for the LCCT.

 

He emphasised that the LCCT was not meant to compete with Penang, but would complement it.

 

Zambry said in five to eight years, the LCCT could possibly handle five million passengers a year.

 

This would bring about economic activity and make Taiping and Parit Buntar a new growth centre.

 

Very high powered lobbying team !

But rm0.5B for a 5M capacity airport (note, whole airport as opposed to a terminal building) - sounds very good value for money by Malaysian airports standard :)

Proposed LCCT in Perak 'not competing with other states'

 

The construction of the proposed low-cost carrier terminal in Perak will be a holistic development for the state and a project of such nature will not compete with other states, says Menteri Besar Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir.

 

He said the Utara Malaysia Airport Terminal (UMAT) was part of the state’s future development for the Northern region.

 

“The federal government is carrying out a detailed study as the proposed project will invite different perspectives from state governments especially from Kedah and Penang which also have airports.

 

“I am looking for cooperation as a new approach to the proposed project.

 

“If we have a new low-cost carrier airport, it will have spin-off effects on other states especially Kedah and Penang which are nearer to Perak,” he said when interviewed over PerakFM in the ‘Selamat Pagi Dr Zambry’ programme.

 

Zambry also said the proposed terminal would be different from the Penang International Airport which was constructed solely to spur economic development not only in the state but also regionally.

 

“Investors would look at good opportunities and with the proposed terminal in the region it would serve as a transition for South-East Asia,” he said.

 

Zambry also said the project was also capable of generating revenue as it would involve billions of ringgit in investment.

 

“There is already an airport in town which is flourishing with industries and it is also a tourist attraction.

 

In addition, if the project becomes a reality, the influx of people moving in and out of the area would increase to about five million, annually.

 

On discussions with the federal government, he said it was still on-going although there was some reservation over the model submitted.

 

“The federal government is concerned that the model we submitted might have an impact on the Penang International airport, but we will continue with the discussions,” he said, adding that the state government has had discussions with Sime Darby.

The General Election is near. So get used to "building new airport" announcement by politicians.

 

Promises. MB maybe can do something. Ex-MB, just look lah after the election.

LCCTs seem to be de rigueur now. I'm pretty sad actually that such inane idea comes from a man in his position.

 

Do you think TF was dead serious about this or just humoring the MB's pipe dream?

What has Perak got to offer to LCCs?

 

LCCs need pax volume - no one in his right mind will travel to Perak when he wants to go to Penang or Kedah!

Large scale helipads and chopper services would sound more reasonable than building an LCCT in Perak! Where in Perak?

 

Keywords are "build" and "GE" indeed.
