Philippines AirAsia to start flights to Kuala Lumpur

MANILA, Philippines - Philippines' AirAsia on Wednesday said it will begin flights from Clark International Airport in Pampanga to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in June.

"We are excited to announce that in the next few weeks, we will start operating our first regional route. Business travelers and OFWs will welcome this new service while it provides tourists exciting choices," AirAsia Inc. CEO Maan Hontiveros said, in a statement.

After launching domestic flights last March, Philippines' AirAsia will start its first international route in June.

The daily flights will depart from Clark to Kuala Lumpur at 15:15, while the return flight is from Kuala Lumpur LCCT (Low Cost Carrier Terminal) at 19:50.

An existing Kuala Lumpur-Clark flight has been operated by Malaysia's AirAsia since 2005.

AirAsia will use a brand new Airbus A320 for its new route.

To promote its new flight, the company is offering one-way tickets from Clark to Kuala Lumpur at only P799, for travel from June 9 to November 30, 2012. The promo runs until May 13. The all-in fare includes base fare, fuel surcharge, processing fee and government mandated fees such as aviation security fee and VAT.

"The additional frequency to Kuala Lumpur enables our guests especially Filipinos to have access to Malaysia’s awesome tourist destinations as well as to draw tourists from Malaysia to our amazing beaches and natural wonders in Puerto Princesa, Kalibo and Davao," Hontiveros said.

The airline also has daily flights to Francisco Bangoy International Airport in Davao, Puerto Princesa International Airport in Palawan and twice daily flights to Kalibo International Airport.

Philippines' AirAsia is a 60-40 joint venture between Filipino investors Hontiveros, Antonio "Tonyboy" Cojuangco and Michael L. Romero, and Malaysia's AirAsia International Inc., a subsidiary of AirAsia Berhad.

AirAsia Boosts Bet on Philippines With Zest Air Stake Purchase

AirAsia Bhd. (AIRA), Southeast Asia’s biggest budget carrier, increased its bet on the surge in travel market in the Philippines after the local unit bought a stake in low-fare airline Zest Airways Inc.

AirAsia Inc., the Philippine venture with Antonio Cojuangco and other officials, agreed to acquire 49 percent of Zest and all of its affiliate Asiawide Airways from local businessman Alfredo Yao,

according to a statement issued today in Manila before the signing. Yao will also buy an undisclosed stake in AirAsia Inc., it said. Financial details weren’t disclosed.

“The airline business is a numbers game,” Yao said in a phone interview, confirming the deal reported by Philippine Daily Inquirer earlier today. AirAsia will provide planes for expansion, Yao said.

AirAsia’s expansion in the Philippines comes a week after it won approval to form a unit in India. The Malaysian carrier formed a Philippine venture in December 2010 to gain access to routes within the country as rivals Cebu Air Inc. (CEB) and Philippine Airlines Inc. expand their fleet and boost flights in the region.

The shareholders of the Philippine venture will infuse funds for working capital, according to the statement. AirAsia Group Chief Executive Officer Tony Fernandes didn’t immediately respond to a call seeking comments.

Philippines is targeting to receive 5.5 million international visitors this year, up from 4.3 million in 2012, Tourism Secretary Ramon Jimenez said Feb. 12. President Benigno Aquino has raised the domestic tourism target to 56.1 million annually by 2016, after the original goal of 35.5 million was breached last year, when the number of local tourists climbed to 40.7 million.

Philippine budget carrier grounded on 'safety' issues

AFP

AFP 1 hour 51 minutes ago

Budget Philippine carrier Zest Air was banned from flying over safety infractions, effective immediately, the country's aviation regulator said on Friday.

The small airline is suspended over incidents that compromised several flights as well as other violations of air safety rules, Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines deputy director-general John Andrews said in a letter to operator Zest Airways Inc.

"(Your) Air Operator Certificate is suspended and (you are) hereby precluded to engage in air carrier operations ... until this Authority is assured that the necessary corrective actions and compliance with aviation safety standards have been undertaken," Andrews said.

I'm a little confused, I know that both airlines will be keeping their own AOC, but will both be under "AirAsia Philippines" ? But I'm reading that we will see 2 separate airlines, AirAsia Philippines and Zest AirAsia, is this correct?

I think PAA and Z2 will merge into one and operate flights out of MNL and open new hubs in the country with a possible hub in KALIBO. AK will still operate into CRK, that is what the rumour mongers have mentioned :clapping:

Give it 3 months.

I think if they target the contingent of foreign workers in Brunei properly with convenient coach service (for example) to Miri, MYY has a reasonable chance of success :)
