Philippines’ AirAsia Incorporated picks Clark as hub

MANILA, 24 MARCH 2011 – AirAsia Incorporated, the Philippine-based affiliate of AirAsia Group, has chosen Clark as its hub in the country.

The airline, which announced its set up last December, will be basing its operations at Clark’s Diosdado Macapagal International Airport. The airline plans to start operating international flights from the airport in the fourth quarter of this year.

“Our choice of Clark underlines the airline’s commitment to developing transportation and tourism hubs outside Manila. This is part of our plan to contribute to the development of the country as a whole. AirAsia, Inc. is excited to start contributing to the economy of Clark and the rest of the country by boosting tourism and offering job opportunities to Filipinos,” said Marianne B. Hontiveros, chief executive of AirAsia, Inc.

Clark is strategically located just north of Manila and is easily accessible to 23 million people from the National Capital Region and Central and Northern Luzon. It is also where the airline’s sister company, Malaysia-based AirAsia Berhad, has been flying to from Kuala Lumpur and Kota Kinabalu since 2005.

“We plan to make Clark the hub for flights to popular destinations including Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan, China, Thailand, Korea and Japan. Travel will become much easier and more affordable for tourists and overseas Filipino workers,” Hontiveros added.

Hontiveros, Antonio O. Cojuangco Jr. and Michael L. Romero own 60% of AirAsia, Inc. in equal partnership. The remaining 40% is owned by AirAsia Berhad.

With the announcement, Clark will become the 13th regional hub of the ASEAN-based AirAsia Group, which currently includes AirAsia, Inc., AirAsia Berhad, AirAsia Thailand and AirAsia Indonesia. The group’s 12 current hubs are Kuala Lumpur, Kota Kinabalu, Kuching and Penang in Malaysia; Bangkok, Phuket and Chiang Mai in Thailand; and Jakarta, Bandung, Surabaya, Medan and Bali in Indonesia.

The opening of AirAsia, Inc. is seen as a vote of confidence in the country’s growing economy and as a big boost to the archipelago’s airline and tourism industries. It will leverage on the strength of AirAsia Group, which leads the low-cost airline industry in Asia. The group has over 60 destinations in all 10 ASEAN countries, China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Australia. Through the group’s low-cost long-haul affiliate AirAsia X, its guests are able to fly to more destinations in Australia, New Zealand, China, Taiwan, India, Iran, Korea, Japan, France and the UK. AirAsia Group has a young fleet of approximately 90 Airbus A320 aircraft, while AirAsia X has a fleet of 11 Airbus A330 and A340 aircraft.

With the popularity of its low fares and extensive network of destinations, AirAsia Group has flown more than 100 million guests since its launch in 2001.

Another new flag on the nose of the AirAsia A320. I wonder if there will be a special liveried A320 for them in future...

They should look to start CRK-CGK route as it is underserved at the moment!

Well I do believe there is a bigger market for Philippines than Indonesia, plus on top of that Cebu's notorious delay record.

Looks like every other Air Asia livery! I was hoping for something alittle different, something like half red, half blue with a large Golden Star! Or a different colour instead of red like yellow or orange would have looked very nice! We need some varaiety to spot the difference!

Apparently, I read somewhere the Vietnam Venture might have a blue livery?

Maybe, but

Cebu Pacific flies MNL - BKI route

AK flies BKI - CRK route

To get to Manila from Clark is actually quite far, about 2 - 3 hrs drive depending on traffic. People usually go to Clark for its casinos and vibrant adult nightlife :D

Don't think AirAsia Philippines will be better than Cebu Pacific until it gets more aircraft in the fleet. However, much will depend on how many routes they are flying.

Nice, looking forward for a trip to Boracay someday :p

Same here too Wilson. But sadly CRK have a very poor connection to MPH. SEAir only do 3 times a week from CRK. Alternatively on Cebu Pacific you need to fly to Cebu for the connection to MPH. Current plans on all connections to MPH is horrid be it on AirAsia or Cebu Pacific or SEAir. Unless you willing to withstand the troublesome road journey to MNL.

If only PAA is also bringing in ATR72 into their ops then it is different case. :)

Someday, I hope that AirAsia will decide on a different colour for each of its regional subsidiary. It is fine if they keep the same style but just a different colour for Thai AirAsia (purple), Indonesia AirAsia (brown - like Indonesian batik), Japan AirAsia (gold), Philippine AirAsia (yellow), Vietnam AirAsia (blue) etc.

That way, we will not get bored during spotting sessions. Here in SIN, we get to see so many AirAsia of the same basic livery and often don't even raise the camera to the eye when we see that signature red patch on final approach (of course, this results in last minute panic when 9M-AFC turns up and we see the gold medal at the last minute).

We now have five LCCs operating between SIN and the Philippines - Jetstar, Tiger, SEAir, AirPhil Express, Cebu Pacific - alongside services by Philippine Airlines and SIA.

Wonder if Philippine AirAsia will join the fray.

Taking about liveries, for AirAsia's standard livery - does anybody know what the squiggly thingy painted on the tail of aircraft represent? Tony's signature?

Branding is very important though. By talking about Red, we meant AirAsia! No doubt! hehe...

Well, it's slightly more boring here. :p

Some of the guys use them as "target" practice as preparation for other slightly different airlines/airframes.
