Kelantan airport to soar

 

KOTA BARU: The Sultan Ismail Petra Airport here is set to soar to become a regional hub for international flights after the upgrading of the runway and other facilities at a cost of RM45mil.

 

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha said the runway had been extended from 1,981m to 2,400m, which could accommodate Airbus 320 and Boeing 737-800 series aircraft.

 

Several new taxiways have also been constructed to accommodate more aircraft, while facilities have been created for helicopter parking services and rescheduled visual docking guidance system.

 

“I am happy to note that the project is going on schedule since works started in June last year.

 

“The project is almost completed, and it will be operational by Sept 9,” he told reporters after being briefed on the project by Malaysia Airports Berhad officials at the Sultan Ismail Petra airport here yesterday.

 

Kong said the runway needed to be expanded to accommodate bigger commercial aircraft.

 

He added that the better facilities would make the airport a regional hub for direct flights to Singapore or South Thailand.

 

“My ministry welcomes plans by any airline to start direct flights from anywhere because the airport here is ready to take in more traffic,” he said.

 

“This airport is ready for international flights from Asean countries. At the same time it can generate economic activities for locals in the tourism and transport sectors,” he added.

 

Malaysian Airlines, AirAsia and FireFly make an average of five to 10 flights each from Kuala Lumpur to Kota Baru daily.

KBR one of busiest airport in the Peninsular Malaysia without title as International Airport, so I don't think it will be a white elephant.

Finally on 10 Aug 2012, Sultan Ismail Petra Airport conducting 1st direct international route to/from Singapore which flight operated by Firefly. Here some photos update for international departure and arrival hall (included immigration counter) at KBR after add hoc upgrading. Probably KBR will conduct more international flight by next year.

The international pax area seems a tad small. While it's adequate for FY's ATR72, if someone sends in bigger equipment on the international routes doubt it'll fit everyone in comfortably. Also it appears that once you clear immigration you can't go to the toilet or grab something to eat from the airside outlets.

 

Time for another expansion perhaps?

In MAHB planning based on "Runway To Success" 2010-2014, Kota Bharu has been designed and categorized under World Class Airport - Leisure Model beside LCCT, KLIA2, Langkawi, Miri, Sibu and Tawau. So probably upgrading terminal for KBR in coming before 2014.

Yes, economy vibrant since Kelantanese working outside state repatriate billions of cold hard cash back home every year. So the ppl are wealthy, but cannot say same for govt. Travel around Kelantan and you see big new brick houses built by people with money, but infra (roads, drainage, water supply, etc) is still lacking, due to lack of govt funding.

The issue of PAS being the ruler for the state could be dealth with PR being the ruler for the nation? And subsequently bring development to the airport specifically and the state in general?

The impression I get of the Kelantan state gov is that they are just not business minded or business friendly... Very religious though.

Kelantan State gomen is more business friendly than BN controlled state gomen, for a start petty traders are not harassed by local authorities. Without a port, it is difficult for FDI to set up plants in Kelantan.

 

Incidentally, to reduce export cost e.g. minerals, the Sultan is investing personally to develop a port in Kelantan.
