Thai Airways and Tiger Airways to launch new airline

SINGAPORE'S budget carrier Tiger Airways and Thai Airways will jointly launch a low-cost airline that is expected to start operations next year, they said in statement.

 

Thai Tiger Airways will fly domestic and international flights from Suvarnabhumi International Airport in Bangkok, starting in the first quarter of 2011.

 

Thai Airways and another Thai entity will hold 51 per cent in the airline with the remaining 49 per cent under Tiger Airways.

 

No details were given on the investment cost for the new budget carrier but the two partners will be holding a media conference call later today after signing the memorandum of understanding.

 

Thai Airways said the venture would allow it to beef up its presence in the fast-growing budget travel market in Asia.

 

"With its disciplined approach to the low-cost model, Tiger Airways has proven that it has the right approach to competing effectively in the growing low fare travel market in Asia," said Thai Airways president Piyasvasti Amranand.

 

"We believe that this move will provide revenue opportunities for Thai (Airways) and allow Thai (Airways) to be more competitive in the region with the anticipated growth in the low cost market...which we expect will lead to growth in air travel in the Asian market."

 

Tiger Airways, partly owned by national carrier Singapore Airlines, has rapidly expanded its route network in the Asia Pacific region since establishing operations in 2004.

 

The carrier flies to 37 destinations in 11 countries and has a fleet of 19 Airbus A320s, with plans to expand to 68 planes by December 2015.

Thai Tiger: Thai Airways puts the Tiger among the pigeons. Regional liberalisation the likely winner

 

Thai Airways and Tiger Airways are to form a joint venture, “Thai Tiger”, to operate international and domestic Thailand domestic point-to-point services. The new JV, to be owned 51:49 by Thai Airways and another "Thai entity", raises the bar in low cost airline operations competition in Asia and could have a major impact on the pace of airline liberalisation in the region. Until now, the Thai government has been highly protective of its flag carrier and has been threatening to drag the chain on the ASEAN multilateral timetable for moving towards open skies for Southeast Asian airlines. This position could now soften, as high cost Thai Airways will have the opportunity to meet competition on a more equal footing. Some of this competition comes from AirAsia’s JV, Thai AirAsia, as well as from its own JV in low cost airline Nok Air (in which Thai currently holds a 39% stake).

 

According to a Tiger/Thai Airways media release this morning, the new airline is to be based in Bangkok, operating “international and domestic flights out of Suvarnabhumi International Airport offering short-haul, point-to-point services within a 5-hour flying radius.” The agreement has clearly been consummated quickly in the last few hours, as a hastily arranged media conference is to be called later this morning. Tiger is due to report later this week and would have been keen to have the announcement out in the open in advance.

SINGAPORE: Fresh doubts have emerged over Tiger Airways' plans to form a budget carrier with Thai Airways.

 

According to reports, the chairman of Thai Airways told reporters on Friday he may let the memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the two carriers lapse.

 

He was speaking following a board meeting of Thailand's national airline.

 

Last year, both parties formed an alliance to operate a new budget carrier, Thai Tiger.

 

But that plan has been delayed, pending approval from the transport ministry.

 

The MOU is set to expire next month.

 

Thai Airways is already planning a new regional airline, called Thai Smile, which may replace the partnership.

 

It is expected to take off from July next year.

 

However, a Tiger Airways spokesperson told Channel NewsAsia there are no changes in the status of the project and discussions on the project will continue.

Thai Airways will not extend its budget airline contract, which will expire in Oct-2011, with Tiger Airways Holdings Ltd, effectively terminating their alliance, according to chairman Ampon Kittiampon. According to a Bangkok Post report, Mr Kittiampon stated Thai's planned new regional airline, Thai Smile, would help replace the Tiger alliance.

Thai Airways plans to establish ultra low cost carrier

 

Thai Airways reportedly plans to establish an 'ultra low cost carrier' in addition to the Thai Smile LCC unit which is scheduled to commence operations from Jul-2012, according to an AFP report. Thai Airways president Piyasvasti Amranand gave no timetable for the launch, but said, "we still need to capture the very low end of the market".

 

Meanwhile Tiger Airways CEO Chin Yau Seng stated Tiger is still interested in establishing a JV LCC in Thailand with Thai Airways, according to a Straits Times report.
