Nothing has even been passed through state regarding alcohol sales ban in Langkawi its but its enough to spook westerners. The same thing in Bali had a brief down demand/mass rescheduling when the "bali bonking ban" was enforced. Only to find out that the rule does not affect tourist and for local indons it has to involve family members filling police report.

When Lahad Datu had the sulu incursion and ESSCOM was setup, US tourist were forbidden to travel to Sabah for holiday by their embassy. Then Sabah experienced an exodus by China tourist lasting nearly a year and a half.

Stuff like these does impact local scene.

QATAR AIRWAYS TENTATIVELY LISTS PENANG SCHEDULE IN 1Q23

Qatar Airways in the first quarter of 2023 intends to extend selected Doha – Phuket service to Penang, although reservation is not available (currently listed as no local traffic for Penang). The oneWorld member tentatively lists 4 weekly flights with Airbus A330-300 aircraft, between 02FEB23 and 25MAR23.

QR just announced a major expansion plan. In ASEAN alone: new service to KNO(!), resumptions for PNH and DVO, increased frequencies to HKT, SGN, HAN, DPS, MNL. I think it's safe to say PEN/LGK are off the cards for the foreseeable future. Even KUL isn't getting much love with their quasi-wet lease from MH going strong.

The QR HKT-PEN sector is for cargo only, unfortunately. No pax. Suffice to say, Malaysia is not *that* important market for QR itself, hence "outsource" their flying to MH. They can earn more $$ by deploying their resources elsewhere. Them going to Medan market will definitely hit MH Umrah and Haj market. Yesterday's announcement answered the qns why QR have been visiting Malaysia a couple of times since last year: to recruit new pilots and cabin crews. I believe there are about 10-20 AirAsia pilots left for QR. Numbers could be higher.....

Qatar Airways will increase its cargo capacity to PEN according to aeroroutes. QR 840/841 will operate 4 times a week using 77W/77L. I wonder if they are short on crew to do this flight with pax.

Lets hope they use the A320Neo for this service - they have 3 (over 16 year old) A320Ceos in their fleet.

FM - Shanghai Airlines, they had weekly operation before the pandemic. MU did not fly into BKI pre-pandemic. I guess post-pandemic the arrangement will remain the same. Anyhow, FM belongs to MU Group, same same family but different airlines.

MU did flew to bki before though on a very limited seasonal run in 2014. So far the longest China based airline that has consistently flown into BKI remains to be China Southern.

For now am not sure what sort of clearance China/our local authority gave for BKI but it seems most flights will be give to the China based full service carriers first. The LCCs have not been give the green light until year end. Former flyers into BKI includes Shanghai airlines, Juneyao, Spring air, Lucky air with Kunming mid applying before the pandemic hit.

Any particular reason LCCs aren't given the green light till much later?

Stumble upon this on youtube.
Air Indonesia

Seems to be taking stuff from Garuda's fleet. Also note they're keen on a350-1000 and Q400s.

The media piece says MU, but I have read since then that it will be FM instead
Also that CZ will be flying CAN-BKI instead of SZX-BKI
One of two options I suppose - either the quoted piece prove be some total hogwash (my sincere apologies if proven be so) or the author of the published piece isn't about to get nominated for mention/prize in any media award ceremony anytime soon 😁
