CITILINK ADDS PADANG – KUALA LUMPUR SERVICE FROM LATE-DEC 2022

Indonesian carrier Citilink this week launched new service to Malaysia, which saw the inaugural of Padang – Kuala Lumpur route on 19DEC22. This route is scheduled 4 times weekly, with Airbus A320 aircraft.

It seems like KLM will revert back to 7 weekly KUL service for NS23. CGK tag will be via SIN instead (2 weekly CGK and 5 weekly DPS from SIN). KLM will serve KUL-MNL tag 5 weekly whilst the other 2 remain unknown for now. AMS bound KL flight will depart KUL at 01:00 instead of a few minutes before midnight (and earlier departure from AMS) with the MNL tag.

It has been ages since KLM served KUL-MNL (and bringing back KL805)! 😅 Seems like quite a few European/American carriers are switching capacity from TATL to Asia/TPAC for NS23. Guess CGK is the one bringing down KUL (for KLM) instead of the other way around.

ET will resume KUL and SIN 4 weekly beginning NS23 schedules per Aeroroutes

And it appears that like KL NS23 schedule will involve 5x weekly tag to MNL and 2x weekly tag to HKG from KUL. KL has fifth freedom from Malaysia to any points in Asia; KUL-MNL/HKG have not opened for reservations yet. I don't know if PR/HK gave KL intermediate point rights tho.

KLM, of sudden, has much love for KUL. I wonder what is the apparent reason behind routing HKG via KUL instead of BKK? BKK-HKG are very high in demand, and didn't they fly straight AMS-HKG before pandemic? I wonder if they will route TPE thru KUL too?

Seems like KLM is using/ has used ICN, BKK and SIN as scissors hub recently. 

  • AMS-BKK-HKG, AMS-BKK-TPE and AMS-BKK-MNL
  • AMS-SIN-CGK, AMS-SIN-DPS and AMS-SIN-KUL
  • AMS-ICN-PVG, AMS-ICN-NRT, AMS-ICN-KIX, AMS-ICN-HGH

  • AMS-SIN-CGK, AMS-SIN-DPS and AMS-SIN-KUL
  • AMS-ICN-PVG, AMS-ICN-NRT, AMS-ICN-KIX, AMS-ICN-HGH

AMS-BKK has more than enough to stand on its own, and that matters much more than BKK-HKG. Yes, they flew AMS-HKG direct pre-pandemic, and I'm sure it'll come back once demand rebounds.

KUL-TPE is a bit of a stretch. I don't think the crew can operate that route as a turn, compared to say ICN/HKG/BKK-TPE.

They manage to fly ICN and NRT while avoiding Russian airspace. I’m sure they can do the same for HKG if they wanted to. In any case, flying via BKK avoids it entirely but they still chose KUL.

I don't think KLM has any animosity towards KUL. They have strong corporate contracts plus there's always beyond connections for KLM at KUL (although most of ANZ traffic has moved to SIN due to AF-QF relationship). But passengers still have a choice of flying KLM all the way AMS-SIN-DPS/CGK or change at KUL to MH for AMS-KUL-DPS/CGK and it comes up to about the same price for either. They can even choose a transfer at SIN with 3K/SQ. I remember flying MH 852 (DPS-KUL) pre-covid and there were a lot of KL AMS bound pax on my flight. KLM's beyond KUL connection is not only limited to MY/ID but Southeast Asia as a whole. BKK, KUL, SIN are their main transfer points in Southeast Asia.

KLM always has had love for KUL. It is Air France that has been a problem, blocking MH from Sky team for a long time. In fact, I was surprised when AF used KL’s 3 extra frequencies to operate flights to KUL around 2013. It was a shame they couldn’t make it work, but I think part of it was that MH upgraded CDG to daily A380 which then trashed that market. Now both are not flying the route. They could have done a joint service or codeshare (3 weekly for AF, 4 weekly for MH) - with connections beyond KUL for AF, and beyond CDG for MH (which they did with AA to USA). 


 

ICN is used by KLM as a stopover for china flights due to the pandemic, I’m sure until china opens up fully.

It's hard to achieve a daily (as in everyday of the week) for EU-KUL JV when either one is operating 3/4 weekly due to time difference. There'll be days with multiple frequencies and days without. AF seems quite happy at SIN - 10 weekly now and up to 14 weekly for NS23.

It appears that EK will resume its 3rd daily flight to KUL for NS23. 2x77W and 1x380 (2-cabin) on EK 346/347. EY will also increase its capacity by flying 77W 5x and 781 2x a week.

QATAR AIRWAYS TENTATIVELY LISTS PENANG SCHEDULE IN 1Q23

Qatar Airways in the first quarter of 2023 intends to extend selected Doha – Phuket service to Penang, although reservation is not available (currently listed as no local traffic for Penang). The oneWorld member tentatively lists 4 weekly flights with Airbus A330-300 aircraft, between 02FEB23 and 25MAR23.

Great to see them make a return, even if it's a 333. I'm guessing this means LGK is on the backburner, if not gone for good.

QR launched flights to PEN few months ahead before flights to LGK started, so it makes sense for them to resume flights to PEN first.
