Wah, by their B787 or A320? Penang is getting music love lately. Airport expansion is very much needed. How fast Kulim Int'l Airport can be built and up and running?

seems to be 320 as per the routesonline data. well, penang airport is long overdue for expansion. kulim airport can be a good replacement for PIA if they able to offer a very good package for airliners and also other users. Else, it will be challenging for kulim airport to replace penang international airport.

Money or Life?

Either way there's going to be plenty of flak. If they restrict the entry of Chinese tourists they're going to be bashed for failing to achieve tourism targets, passenger traffic, etc etc. If they don't, the overnight medical experts will criticise them for being wilfully blind.

Coronavirus: Sabah suspends all incoming flights from China

https://www.thestar.com.my/news/nation/2020/01/30/coronavirus-sabah-suspends-all-incoming-flights-from-china

This is gonna be devastating for the tourism players here 😧

Believe most Chinese arrival to Sabah are on package tour and as China has banned outbound tours, many flights would be cancelled regardless.

Heavily depending on single source of customers could be easy on marketing but will take a heavy hit in a situation like this.

China Eastern and Southern to suspend flights to MLE from 1st February. Believe they will similarly suspend flights to BKI on their own.

Right now the consensus is that tourism targets be damned. Safety comes first.

Especially now that the WHO has declared it to be a Public Health Emergency of International Concern - which means the government now has the right to stop inbound travelers from China.

and only sabah is suspending flight to china as of now, no other airport like JHB, KUL, PEN, LGK. right?

I think the situation is very fluid and under constant review. In any case, many airlines have already begun suspension of flights to and from China.

Apparently Xiamen Air doing an 'evacuation flight' from BKI - dunno when

Similarly, all Chinese airlines have cancelled all flights to MLE until further notice but CZ will operate 3 flights in next 4 days to repatriate stranded pax.

Not sure the first to cancel out were mostly chinese carriers. I think staye gov also gave a deadline so logistics could be sorted out. Ak Flights to Shenzhen, kunming, guangzhou were flying yesterday, todays flight along with Hangzhou are cancelled.

Anyways China gov is offering stranded tourist in Sabah return flight rate of rmb3900 on charter flights. So tourist stuck here have the option to extend their visa(likely for another month) and wait for their respective airlines to resume flights or take up the charter offering.
