Asiana Voted Airline Of The Year

May 21, 2010

Passengers have voted South Korea's Asiana Airlines airline of the year in an annual survey by British-based consultancy Skytrax, edging out Singapore Airlines and Qatar Airways which ranked second and third.

More than 17.9 million air travellers from over 100 countries took part in the 10-month survey between July 2009 and April 2010 to choose their favourite airline.

"The award slogan of 'The Passenger's Choice' underlines the fact that Asiana Airlines are succeeding in satisfying the hardest critics -- their users," said Skytrax chairman Edward Plaisted.

Qatar Airways was rated third while Cathay Pacific came fourth.

The final top 10 ranking in the awards were:

1.Asiana Airlines

2.Singapore Airlines

3.Qatar Airways

4.Cathay Pacific

5.Air New Zealand

6.Etihad Airways

7.Qantas

8.Emirates

9.Thai Airways

10.Malaysia Airlines

QF came 7th??? How on earth did that happen? Both MH and TG are miles ahead of QF!! MH won't have a chance of making the top 5 until they upgrade their product with all their new planes...

2 flaws I see:

1. QF should not be in the list but replaced by Kingfisher.

2. MH best economy class? Mh A330 cabin best in the world? With SQ having upgraded all their fleet for Y class cabin to big PTVs and new interior, this award belongs to them.

I think TG F Lounge in BKK is very deserving. It has won this award for 2-3 years running now. MalaysianWings don't have a trip report featuring this lounge but A.Net has a few. Just search for any TG F trip report. ThaiA345, a regular F patron of TG mentioned to me that the F ground service in BKK from kerbside drop off till they handed you over to the cabin crew at the aircraft's door is unbeatable and the staff at the F lounge treat F passengers like royalty. The F lounge offer free buggy service and complimentary massage to all F passengers, amongst other.

The rest of the F class awards seemed to be scooped by Etihad. I think that is the benchmark right now. No trip report of Etihad's new FCL even in A.Net yet.

Malaysia Airlines won 2 awards, the "Staff Service Excellence for Asia" and "World's Best Economy Class" at the 2010 World Airline Awards in Hamburg.

The event saw more than 40 airlines from around the world receiving their awards from Skytrax, the organizer of the awards.

The winners were selected by some 18 million air travellers from 100 different nationalities in a 10 month survey, between July 2009 and April 2010.

Capt Azharuddin Osman (left) Malaysia Airlines Director of Operations, collects the award from Mr Edward Plaisted of Skytrax at the ceremony in Hamburg

Skytrax Chairman, Mr Edward Plaisted said, "The "Staff Service Excellence Award for Asia" is an excellent award for Malaysia Airlines. This replaces the Cabin Staff category awards of earlier years, and represents a much wider achievement. The Service Excellence Award recognizes airlines that deliver the highest standards of staff service not only onboard the flight, but also at the home base airport. Malaysia Airlines also won the "World's Best Economy Class" award, reflecting the quality of product and service delivered to customers. The World Airline Awards are known as 'The Passenger's Choice', underlining the fact that Malaysia Airlines are clearly satisfying the hardest critics - their customers."

Malaysia Airlines Managing Director/ CEO, Tengku Dato' Azmil Zahruddin said, "I am proud of the MAS team's outstanding performance. They have demonstrated the best of Malaysian hospitality by being natural, spontaneous, determined and willing to our guests.

"Throughout the years, we have worked hard to improve our service delivery as part of our airline- wide initiative to enhance customer experience. I am delighted that our efforts have been recognized by our customers. We will continuously build on our culture of putting our guests first. This will complement our fleet replacement programme which will allow customers to enjoy the latest aircraft which will be delivered beginning October this year."

The World Airline Awards were established 1999 by Skytrax, the specialist research advisor to the air transport industry. The awards are based on the annual World Airline Survey. The 2009/2010 Survey included over 200 airlines, from the largest international airlines to domestic carriers, throughout the world.

The survey measures over 38 different items of customer satisfaction for each airline's product and service standards. Assessing the typical customer experience across airport and onboard environments - from check-in to boarding, while onboard, the customers rate seat comfort, cabin cleanliness, food and beverages, inflight entertainment and many aspects of staff service.

Unless MH economy has miraculously improved in the last few months I'm afraid I have no faith in any of the Skytrax awards.

Not sure what they judge on but MH IFE is rubbish, old aircraft with tired interiors and the catering is poor, so I would be surprised for MH to make the top ten!

For some people, being in 34" seat of MH is a much better experience compared to being in QF A380, EK 777 and others. Although their hardwares are not that great, their cabin crew always make up for it.

Interesting to see how the Malaysian media has spun this announcement. They have blown the MH win for best Y class to huge proportions but failed to highlight that they actually slipped to 10th in the overall airline of the year rankings.

Nice joke Johan, better to be on Old MH bird than on a brand new A380. Very funny. Possibly you are the only one who would prefer to trave on an MH A330 half way across the world as apposed to being on an A380 if there is a choice.

If you're a big guy, you'll appreciate the difference. If it's Economy, I rather fly on something with better pitch than being crammed in a state of the art but slightly less comfortable plane, especially if I'm stuck in the window seat and the person next to me isn't willing to trade seats. Besides, many people have all the iThings to entertain them so I don't think IFE is that important.

Agreed the seat pitch and I hope that that will not change with the new planes on order or the last dangling carrot will also be gone.

For some reason as far as the service is concerned I cannot forget the TR from Azizul to LHR on MH firsdt class. Terrible food (Not all courses but totally lacking in some key course) and not proffesional service.

The stewardess told him: Ingatkan budak lagi. sums up the service attitude rendered on that flight.

Well, that's not my experience. The whole statement was made based on the comments I found on the net. Most people prefer polite and attentive cabin crew over brand new cabin and horrible cabin crew. Otherwise, you will hear people raving about Qantas experience more often than MH.

QF, EK, SQ can fill their A380 on kangaroo route while MH with excellent seat pitch and cabin crew can’t justify A380 on the same route? What’s wrong with these ungrateful and insensitive pax? :sorry:

No wonder MH has lost market shares, those who has iThings travel on AK, those who hasn’t take SQ, CX, EK :pardon:

i would say consistency lacks on MH. sometime i'll get a whole can , sometimes i'll get half a cup ...

but having flown on MH for 4 years long haul (KUL-LHR) & (KUL-BTU) i'd say MH economy is pretty decent. their beef steak on international routes is absolutely tender , i've seen pax asking for seconds even ! and satay on domestic is much welcomed over their snackbox

will be travelling again on those routes in a week , and hopefully the service will be the same :)

Understand MH serve sirloin/striploin/fillet or similar in EY, and cooked to almost well done. Unless they tenderized the meat, well done sirloin/striploin/fillet can’t be absolutely tender. However, their steak sauce is tasty.

Bon appetite :drinks:
