Continental jet makes emergency landing in NJ

Hydraulic problem forces Continental jet to make emergency landing in NJ; no injuries

On Sunday May 9, 2010, 2:53 pm EDT

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) -- A hydraulic problem has forced a Tokyo-bound Continental Airlines plane to make an emergency landing shortly after takeoff at New Jersey's Newark Liberty International Airport.

Port Authority of New York and New Jersey spokesman Steve Coleman says Flight 9 landed safely Sunday afternoon about an hour after it left Newark. He hasn't said how many people were aboard.

No injuries were reported. The Boeing 777 wasn't damaged.

Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen says the pilots burned off and dumped fuel to make the airplane lighter before returning to the airport because of "a hydraulic problem."

Houston-based Continental Airlines Inc. hasn't returned a telephone message seeking comment.

In January, a United Airlines jetliner scraped its belly on a Newark runway after part of its landing gear failed.

Ok. My question: What if a lighting strikes at the trailing fumes?

The plane won't be flying into a thunderstorm in the first place more so to dump fuel INSIDE a thunderstorm.
